  1. That! That is what freaks me out. Because you don't know. None of us will know WHY. For one school, I plan to ask how I can improve for next year but that doesn't guarantee a response. Bleck.
  2. Don't get discouraged! Like grad_wannabe said, lack of fit doesn't reflect poorly on your chances at other schools.
  3. Someone on the English forum suggested unsubscribing to all unnecessary email lists until April. I'm definitely following that advice and thought I should share.
  4. Same. I feel you. Mostly I'm just trying to pretend its all over to preserve my sanity.
  5. That was me. I spoke to the DGS at NCA (I'm sad I know what that all means). He said they're supposed to report to the university who they want to admit by Jan 30. He was not sure whether or not the early deadline would speed up notification. The admissions rep with him made it sound like the interview weekend would be on the same schedule as always, for what it's worth.
  6. Wow! They must love you! Congrats again! (such a quick response deserves two)
  7. ^ This 1000%. Not for Cornell, but I'm in a similar situation. They were wonderfully polite and encouraging; I just hope that translates into actual interest.
  8. That's rough. I think many schools have similar stats, though. Most of mine were in the 4-7% acceptance range. That's why I'm already making plans for applying next year
  9. Aww, congrats! Do yourself a favor. Do not look at any of your application materials again. It's too late now anyway
  10. Congrats! Hopefully that acceptance will lessen the anxiety of January and February for you. If you don't mind me asking, what was the deadline for the school that accepted you? It seems so early for acceptances!
  11. According to the results reported on GradCafe, UW Madison should be sending out interview invites by January 9. That's the earliest. I suppose it's better to know earlier.
  12. Yikes. I don't know if two-week turnaround times impress or concern me. Can they really read upwards of 30 pages per application in that time? Are your two remaining apps due today? If so, good luck!
  13. Oh dear. When was that app due? That sounds like a crazy turnaround time! Sorry to hear about your laptop! Did it kill any of your documents?
  14. There is nothing quite like the sheer panic of pushing that final "submit" button, is there?
  15. That's why I was asking. I found them to be helpful, too... although it's a bit weird that this thread will serve the same function next year.
  16. ^ This. So supportive and so frustrating.
  17. I've read through that thread, as well. What's the problem?
  18. I think that's a personal choice. I applied to schools based only on faculty and program fit; location was not a factor. On the other hand, one of my grad faculty is a strong proponent of only applying to places you'd enjoy living since you'll be there for so long. I don't think either is inherently right or wrong. Like EVERYTHING ELSE in this process, I don't think there's a clear answer. I chose to apply to 10 to increase my odds but, actually, I may not submit a few of them. As I adjust my SOP for each program, it's becoming increasingly clear which schools don't match my interests as well as I'd thought.
  19. I suggest contacting the program coordinator and asking. That's the only way to know for sure.
  20. I agree with iphi. Also, I would give anything for a ~50% acceptance rate. My programs are at 4-7%.
  21. I mentioned 1) professors I want to work with, 2) why, 3) how their work specifically will help my research, and 4) resources specific to the school.
  22. Yes. It says my application is "not complete" but it lists my transcripts, GRE scores, application, and recommendations as completed before the deadline. I emailed the coordinator about it. Guess I'll find out tomorrow. What? The Washington deadline isn't until the 15th.
  23. People always reported being frustrated with the application status pages and know I know why. UMich is killing me.
