  1. That's interesting. What was the subject of the online course you helped set up?
  2. Nice! I'd love to TA for a film class someday. I had some great film classes during my undergrad. I TA'd for a Race, Gender, Class, and Media course and I've taught sections of technical writing (online and traditional). I've also been invited to guest lecture a few times (Class on TV, Infographics, etc.).
  3. How's everyone doing? The thread has died down a little this week. Do any of you have teaching experience? If so, what have you taught? If not, what would you like to teach?
  4. I was invited to interview for my top choice! Here's hoping it goes well and I get accepted.

  5. I got an official letter in the mail from one of my schools today... it was a confirmation they received my application. I appreciate the school being communicative but really not the time to be sending out letterhead for funsies.
  6. We scheduled it for next Friday. It's a Skype interview, which I have never used before lol Thanks!
  7. Either way, that's exciting! Was that your top choice or are you still holding out hope for another school?
  8. Congrats! That's so exciting. I'm glad for you. Did you get assigned to your POI of choice or is that decided later?
  9. If this cycle doesn't work out, I may be moving states to be closer to family. I adjunct and do graphic/web design on the side so I would continue to work and look for opportunities to improve my application. I'd apply again next year but after that, I'm not sure I'd be willing to go through a third round. I graduated in May so I've just been working full time, working on the side, teaching, researching, applying, etc.
  10. True. I am actually really concerned about the financial aspect of it. I wish comm had one of those stipend lists like philosophy or English, etc. Everyone hopes for guaranteed funding for 5 years but the dollar amount of that funding... who knows.
  11. Oh, nice! The DGS seemed really proud of/impressed with it as well. Glad to hear! Did you speak with any faculty or students while you were there? I visited the University of Oregon campus over the break; it was really nice. Eugene is a nice town. I have a top choice school and, were I to be accepted, would definitely attend. Barring that school, I think I would be equally happy at any of the other schools. However, like bgt28 mentioned, there are two that have the added bonus of family and/or friends nearby.
  12. So, to pass the time before I can check my email again , I thought I'd ask you all a question (feel free to ask your own questions, as someone else mentioned wanting to keep the thread going as we all stress out). Do you have a top-choice program? Have you ranked all the schools to which you applied or do you think you would you be equally happy at any of them?
  13. ^ This. I, like many people here, have an interdisciplinary background (English lit to art history to practical communication to comm/media studies). Like hcstritz, I followed the same research interest(s) through each field and I think my research is the stronger for it but it could look choppy to an outsider. I think the biggest flaws in my application are 1) interdisciplinary background, 2) no publications, and 3) practical masters to theory-heavy PhD. I've done everything I could in the last year to round out my application but I'm worried it'd be breadth without the depth they're expecting.
  14. Looks like UNC-CH started sending out acceptances. Congrats whoever you are and best of luck to those who applied there!
  15. Good luck!! I hope you get in everywhere so you can have your pick.
  16. I know it's early days and all but I already wish we could get automatic responses after hitting that submit button. I got an email from one of the faculty members over the break and almost had an episode lol the coordinator was out sick so she was just confirming receipt of funding applications but just seeing her name in my inbox was jarring.
  17. All of my apps are submitted and now I just have to wait. The recent holiday season really drove home the point that I have NO IDEA where I will even live next year. So odd.
  18. Congrats! That sounds super promising!
  19. Me too. I shouldn't have waited. I'm out of application mode now.
