  1. These are great responses! Thank you! I had not even considered Gallaudet. I would love to work with the deaf. I see that you are doing the same degree through USU. Do you like it?
  2. Hello, I am a non-traditional student with a bachelor's degree in English and a minor Services for the Deaf. I am fairly fluent in American Sign language. I am about to start the 2nd bachelor's program at USU in August, to get my pre-requisites out of the way. My problem is that my overall GPA is only 2.41. In 2007, I left school with a plummeting grade point average due to having seizures (I have epilepsy) and another issue that resulted in a series of surgeries. My seizures are controlled now, and I have not had any for many years, and the surgeries cured the other condition. I am now very healthy and have no problems medically at all (I still have epilepsy, but my medication controls it and there are no issues from it any longer). I returned to school in 2012, changed my major to English, and finished that semester with a 4.0. I graduated in December of 2014, with a GPA in my major of 3.48, which was maintained while I worked full-time (sometimes 100 hours in two weeks while attending school 12 hours a week) and was able to be active in events on campus. I also was able to present a paper at a conference in the fall of 2013. I say all of this because I am a good student now, despite my overall GPA. I simply had too many credit hours under my belt to be able to raise my GPA easily. I plan on only applying to schools that focus on the last 60 credit hours. My question is should I apply this fall while simultaneously taking the classes I need for prereqs, or should I wait until next fall when I have completed the degree in Communication Disorders? If I am able to maintain a 4.0 in this program, combined with my major GPA from my first degree (to account for the last 60 credit hours) would I even have a chance of getting in anywhere? I don't want to wait until next year if I don't have too (I just turned 37 on Sunday), but if it increases my chances of getting accepted anywhere, it would be worth it. I am taking the GRE in August.
  3. Following this thread with interest as I am also applying out of field. I have an English degree as well, with a minor in Services for the Deaf. I will be taking a few prereqs through USU this fall online, though.
  4. My scores were roughly similar to yours. I will be taking the test again, because I know I am capable. I am also not in school right now since I graduated last December, so that will help, not having other classes to prepare for. However, I feel like I have test anxiety, which is why my scores were that low. I, too, scored better on practice tests. I always did well on exams in class, so the test anxiety seems limited to tests like the GRE.
  5. I am 35, and just graduated two weeks ago with my bachelors degree. I have decided to wait a year before applying, so will be applying for the 2016 school year. I am not married and don't have children, so relocation will be no problem for me. I am actually looking forward to moving to another state for school. However, I do think that grad school is a challenge for any mature student, children or not. Good luck!
  6. I put this here rather than in the SOP thread on the main page, because it pertains to SLP. I am currently writing (attempting it anyway) my statement of purpose, and am having trouble with it. I am interested in working in the medical field, and would like to discuss my interest in this because of my grandmother, who suffered a TBI several years ago that affected her speech greatly. Also, how and at what point in the SOP should I give the reason for my low overall GPA (2.4), and discuss my higher GPA for my last 60 (and in my major) that I have maintained while working a full time professional job? Thank you!
  7. Thank you!! I was thinking the spring would be the perfect time to take prereq classes, as I will be finished in December. I just do not have the time in my schedule to take any extra classes this semester, even online. Thank you for the all the suggestions, I will definitely be putting them to use.
  8. As I am majoring in English (will finish this December), and minoring in Services for the Deaf, will I most likely need to take some prerequisite courses in the spring? I will be finished with my degree, so that would be the optimal time to do this. Will I even be eligible for SLP with this major and minor? I am rather new to the decision that I want to go the SLP route, but also very firm in that decision. I am pretty sure I will need prereqs, though. Also, do any of you know what are good schools that offer these classes online? Thank you!!
  9. Thank you, everyone! I feel a little better about this now. I do have a much, much better GPA in the last 60, and will be taking 15 hours in the fall. I will do some research on schools. Those application deadlines are going to come up fast!
  10. I will graduate in December with a bachelor's degree in English and a minor in Services for the Deaf. I am now interested in speech pathology. However....I have an overall GPA of 2.3, due to bad grades from about 10 years ago. This was from several years of major medical problems. I went back to school in August of 2012, and made a 4.0 that semester. I have brought my GPA up, and I have a 3.4 for the past two years, almost 60 credit hours. I am already studying for the GRE and will be taking it in September. I guess my question is, should I even try applying to any schools? Is there any hope for me with this kind of a record? I have maintained mostly As and Bs (2 Cs) since I went back to school, while also holding down a full time job. Thank you!
  11. I am part Choctaw, and from southern OK, and was working on a writing project about the Trail of Tears, when I ran across a book. I was curious, so I googled the author's name and discovered that she, too, is Choctaw, from OK, and just happened to teach at UNC. I found her email, sent her a message introducing myself and she ended up having Theda Perdue (UNC historian) help me with some research for the project. We have been emailing for two years now, and she is the one who made it happen.
  12. I am an English major and history minor, and will be applying to history programs in this next cycle as well. I graduate this December. I'm still not sure what schools I will be applying to yet, although Toronto is on my list and UNC Chapel Hill. UNC is flying me down to visit the grad school this fall.
  13. I am watching this thread with interest. I will be applying for the 2015 school year at UNC. They are going to fly me down to visit the graduate school this fall.
