@viola: Who are you interested in working with at Amherst? I want to work with Dr. Pietromonaco, but Amherst is definitely a reach school for me.

@moralresearcher: I haven't been to Chicago during the winter. I applied to DePaul and weather is my biggest worry. I am from Texas and I don't know what snow really is.

I've looked at the results page and saw that last year results for the schools that I am looking at ranged from beginning of Feb all the way to Apr 28, but for the most part results came in the beginning of March.

and now for something completely different...

TATTOOS. some of us have them, some of us don't. some of us want them and some of us want to get rid of them.

if you have them, how are you going to handle it in your program? or the job market? cover up? or let it all hang out?

anyone have experiences, positive or negative, that they'd like to share?

i'll start: i'm inked all effing over the place. i can always cover them up with long sleeves and pants. i'm also nervous about how i will be perceived, but at the same time they're very well done and i get nothing but positive feedback on them (except from mom, but hey, go figure).

and for those of you who are wondering: do i regret them? hell no.

Is it really so hard to just get along? Sure you are going to read some posts by some really ignorant people, but just ignore them. Believe it or not, your opinion doesn't mean anymore than anybody else's if all you are trying to do is start/continue problems.

Admissions offices should check their phone messages regularly, and respond to phone and email messages if they have a policy of never answering the phone. (It bothers me that whilst applicants must be consistently professional in their communications with departments, there seem to be no standards for how applicants are to be treated - remaining polite while desperately trying to get the answer to a simple question from a department is very awkward and difficult!)

Applicants who are not accepted should be notified of their rejections.

Universities and programs with minimum GPA or GRE requirements/cutoffs should state these clearly on their websites so as to prevent those with no chance of acceptance from wasting time and money applying.

Non-profit doesn't necessarily mean that they don't make any profit. It is what they with that profit that can give them non-profit status. Churches that make $94 are supposed to use that money for the right reasons.

A nonprofit organization (abbreviated NPO, also not-for-profit)[1] is an organization that does not distribute its surplus funds to owners or shareholders, but instead uses them to help pursue its goals.[2] Examples of NPOs include charities (i.e. charitable organizations), trade unions, and public arts organizations. Most governments and government agencies meet this definition, but in most countries they are considered a separate type of organization and not counted as NPOs.

So I called the Houston secretary today and had a great moment... I asked if there were any updates and she told me that only 1 prof has told her any names of accepted students. I asked if that professor just happened to be Dr. Acitelli and she said "Yes!" and excitedly asked "Is this Matthew??". Well my name is not Matthew... It was a great way to find out that I was probably not getting an offer from Houston.

Not to sound bitchy or whatever, but if you have an acceptance to a school that would be a better fit for you (because they would actually let you do the research you wanna do), then you should decline this offer so that they can give it to the person that is currently praying for you to turn them down, especially since that's what it sounds like you're going to do eventually. I understand wanting to have options, but it doesn't sound like this offer is actually an option for you, but I could be misunderstanding what you're saying.

    Just my $0.02.

Is it really necessary to leave bitter and childish remarks on the results page when you find out you've been rejected?

I seriously want to know why people do this. Are these people who believe they are such hot shots that they deserve admission to every top program? You're going to get rejects, so deal with it like an adult,

Wait... You still live at home with your parents? Lol sorry, I can imagine what a nightmare that would be. I'm so glad I don't have to deal with my parents being around when the mail comes in, just like college all over again! I did get a letter from one of the schools I'm applying to just letting me know about financial aid options, they just love to make us nervous!

Oh leave him alone, we all feel that way. I find that a surprising comment from someone whose name is "anxiousapplicant." Do you already have acceptances or something? Or maybe you're just trying to cut other people down when they already feel terrible by telling them they won't get in anywhere or can't have any friends. Its just unnecessary, everyone feels negative at this point if they don't have any acceptances.

jlloyd87 reacted to DeWinter in Professors who pull you down
I'm wondering if anyone else has come across that professor (who barely knows you) who tries to tell the students in the department to not apply to top 75 programs and tries to de-motivate them, rather than motivating them. I mean, I know average GRE scores don't automatically discredit you from getting in (I'm in the liberal sciences) but I feel that despite some weaknesses of the student, professors should motivate students and tell them that it's worth a shot applying to schools.

What's wrong with applying in the top 30's or 40's or 50's? I was told that these were "top tier" and that I should look at lower level schools. That it's going to be tough to get in. All based on my GRE scores!I'm coming across more and more professors who seem to pull you down, instead of making you feel hopeful. I hated the GRE with a passion and I'm just not good with these kinds of tests. It doesn't mean I'm stupid in any way! Not every professor is like this but I feel that students shouldn't be told that they can't get in anywhere because they have an average GRE score especially after they've applied. It's so demotivating! Anyone else have thoughts, inputs?

It is a dream to get into a not a top ranked school but a good school who is respected with average GRE scores but good grades, strong statement of purpose, etc.?
