  2. I emailed a question to USC's American Studies/Ethnicity dept. about my application (not status or anything), and they said that they would send letters out end of February/beginning of March. That's way later than past decision dates... so not sure what that means. Just a heads up!
  3. yeah, actually! will you be there?
  4. so if someone got in to UMN, what does that mean for the rest of us? I'm not sure how the timeline of admissions works here... are we all out?

  7. Well, I'm applying for jobs right now, so hopefully I'll have something to do if the gods don't smile upon my academic plans. Looking to teach high school again. Otherwise, I'm moving someplace I want to be - like Boston, DC, SF, Seattle, LA - to look for a job. My state's gone in the can employment-wise!
  8. Same issue. No worries. My transcript was even listed as missing, and they had it and just hadn't updated the site.
  9. Little known fact... but the Nigerian bank scam emails are actually Ivy League admissions committee members SOLICITING YOUR STRICTEST CONFIDENCE IN THE TRANSACTION TO COLLECT YOUR INHERITANCE OF GREAT MAGNITUDE. YOUR NAME, ADDRESS, PHONE NUMBER, SOCIAL SECURITY NUMBER, BANK ACCOUNT NUMBER, AND PIN CODE ARE NEEDED. THIS TRANSACTION IS 100% SAFE.
  10. This probably goes without saying, but a few weeks ago, I received an email through the U of Minn's application system saying that my application was complete and was sent to the committee. HOWEVER - I received this email in my Spam folder. And I use Gmail, whose filter is usually pretty solid at figuring it out. So keep your eyes out...
  11. I found out last week I was accepted to present on a panel at a national conference in March. I'm excited but mainly terrified. But - all my application deadlines, except for one, have already passed. Should I notify my programs of this new addition to my CV? If so, how? I don't know if it's a big enough deal to actually contact them, or if it'd make a difference.
  12. True that! It's refreshing to be able to come somewhere virtually where people know what the process is like. That admission isn't just numerically based, that nothing - admission or rejection - is certain, that the process really is smoke and mirrors. I've stopped telling people I'm applying to school because I don't want to explain what it's like anymore... ("What? You applied to more than 10 programs? You'll CLEARLY get into all of those! Blah blah blah blah I don't know anything about anything"). As long as people can remain cordial and civil, this forum certainly accomplishes what it purports to offer. So thanks, everyone?
  13. OMG I KNOW. Same story when I was applying for jobs last year - people would ask and I'd be like well, the economy's gone to hell, still looking... and they'd be like OH YOU'RE GREAT YOU'LL DEFINITELY FIND SOMETHING SOON. And I'd be like no, the economy's terrible. Don't you get this search at all? You don't understand the process! It's a different game than anything you've played before! Nobody gets the game but people going through it...
  14. I too play competitive badminton - HS and college I also used to live in Hawaii, have a deep interest in drug literature (like what do drugs do to people's understandings of reality...), enjoy making lists, play the ukulele, and have an obnoxious 15.5 year old dog who wakes me up at 7am every day just because he wants someone to hang out with.
  15. I'm not sure how many of you are in a similar position, but here it goes anyway. I graduated from college a few years ago, spent some time in full time employment, and am now employed part time to devote more time to applications. Very part time. I work in education, and with schools off for break and whatnot, my time spent doing things of import is... limited. So, I'm not sure how many of you are left with a wealth of free time that's driving you bonkers, or some free time that's driving you bonkers, but what kinds of hobbies or activities are you undertaking or beginning to keep busy and engaged? For me: 1) I was accepted to present at a conference in late March, so I have to whittle down a paper into a presentation as well as do some additional research so I don't look like a moron. 2) I started constructing a Revell model of a submarine... I need paint thinner. 3) I bought some photo albums to FINALLY organize my mounds of old photos from years past. 4) I have been reading and watching movies more - currently reading Watergate in American Memory (Schudson) and Diamond Age (Stephenson). And going to be watching the LOTR trilogy. 5) Going to random minor league sporting events (cheap and entertaining!). 6) Learning classic rock songs on my ukulele. Cross Stairway off my list; beginning some new ones soon. How about you folks? Anyone learning a new language or building a scale model of the Taj Mahal out of pretzel sticks?
  16. I'll tell people who know all about my admissions process and whatnot. Then I'll begin researching real estate... immediately. New beginnings!
  17. Same story for me - east coast school, ApplyYourself system. Called today, they had everything, they just hadn't updated the system. And I submitted my application five weeks ago. So I second the previous comment that, unless they contact you, it's likely that they have everything they need!
  18. 1) Brother 2) Mom (who will tell everyone else in the family) 3) LOR writers 4) Mentors from high school and my job this past year 5) My Facebook fiancee/BFF 6) Results page 7) My entire social network while waiting, it's nice to think about this kind of stuff... a day will come when we all KNOW if we're accepted or not! oyyyyyyy.
  19. seconded! I hope you all find a program that fits well with your interests and your wallet.
  20. I love Minneapolis! I have family up there and in South Dakota so I end up in the Twin Cities pretty frequently. Though I am not a fan of the weather... made worse by this winter storm that's plaguing the entire middle of the country.
  21. Ultimately, I'm in total agreement with the others that none of this means anything if the fit's no good. So I hope we all find someplace that works well for us, in terms of interests and qualifications. But we can all use a little positive reinforcement, right? -GPA 3.62 from an ivy league university, 3.70 final two years, 3.89 senior year. -Solid GRE scores, including freakish Q score for a prospective humanities student... 660V, 790Q, 6.0AW. -Received departmental grant for conducting senior thesis research, for which I received an honors grade and graduated with honors in my field and overall. -Paper for a class in my field was described as the best in the class by my professor, for whom I worked and from whom I also received an LOR... and a version of this paper is my writing sample and turning into a conference presentation this March. -Received another LOR from a TA and professor that was apparently over 4 single-spaced pages long (I don't have that much to say about myself, so I can't even imagine what he said!). -Plentiful teaching experience, including tutoring, high school teaching, and TAing (combined experience for the past 3+ years... hard to have consistent employment when you're a student, ya know?). -Plentiful research experience of the employment variety, some of it in my field, some not. -Planned a large scale conference on culture that was covered by several media outlets, like CNN, NPR, BBC, etc. -International travel experience: independent research in Europe for my senior thesis, as well as study abroad in Europe, and ended up fluent in Spanish. Weaknesses exist, to be sure, but I'm going to try to ignore those... ha. But let's just say I'll be thrilled to receive one acceptance.
  22. another terrible fake out? when a school emails you through the system, all official-like, with a subject intimating "application status update" (!!) to ONLY tell you that your application has been sent to a program for consideration. DAH.
  23. So, since we have a book thread going, why not a movie thread? (apologies if this is a repeat; couldn't find one previously). Some recommendations from the recently seen... Sherlock Holmes, for those who like action sequences, Robert Downey Jr., and the steampunk aesthetic (it is really nice to look at). Once, for those who love music, romance, and indie films. This is one of my favorites, and the soundtrack makes it easy to watch over and over! Star Wars, great for escape. And if you do the whole trilogy, lots of time spent in a fantasy world! Bonnie and Clyde, for those who love gore, violence, and movies from the 1960s. Stand By Me, a great coming of age film with stellar performances from a pretty young cast. It's also got a lot of humor in it (and a very young Kiefer Sutherland and John Cusack). What have you all seen lately and would recommend?
  24. I've been out of college for a year and a half, so I'm enjoying time to pleasure read! Currently undertaking: Nobrow, by John Seabrook. It's all about the decline of the distinction between high brow and low brow culture (or, at least the meaningfulness of that dichotomy). Pretty interesting anecdotes! Also reading The Diamond Age by Neal Stephenson. One of my favorite authors, though I'm not far enough into it to say what it's like. If you're into linguistics, anthropology, computer science, history, or any related field (seriously), read Snow Crash now...
  25. I'm applying to a combination of American Studies and History programs. Interested in 20th c. American (obvi), specifically political/social movements and music. Side interests are mainly in the popular culture realm. Application places are in my signature... I don't even remember all the schools off the top of my head. Ha!
