We're supposed to get a lot of rain soon, so maybe that would mitigate it? Also, I may be biased for having lived here for most of my life, but SoCal isn't that distracting. That said, it is mostly sunshine and puppies.

On the one hand, as an envious person myself, I can sympathize, especially on the romantic front. On the other hand, you're making this comment as a person who got accepted to every program she applied to on a forum where many/most people are freaking out over the possibility of getting the exact opposite result (or close to it). Does your life or your preception of it really suck so much?

That is actually a terrible guideline. Or a terrible typo. If it's the former, that's like 10 dissertations long right there.

Romantic spots, movie theatres (ones that show recent movies), grocery stores (gotta be some within the area), bookstores... I think it all depends on what you would be doing while in Grad School, and what you like doing. For example, I currently do not have a driver's license, so everything has to be within a walk/bus ride/bike ride away. I like biking, (I'm a total noob though), so bike lanes and bike paths are a thing I'd look out for. I like to at least try to cook, so any foodie places would be something to look into (but not a must). I will have days where I would rather be doing nothing, or do not have the energy to cook, so nearby takeout spots or pizza places, like a Papa Johns, would be right up my alley. You're obviously not going to know how livable a place is after a day (unless it was really, REALLY bad), so I guess you should ask yourself what's most important to you, and look for that.

Have you tried asking for funding from your top choice, mentioning there was no way you could afford to attend otherwise?

That one never really worked out for me. Replacing one type of pain with another seems counterproductive.

For me facebook has always been a way to feel behind everyone else in life. Everyone always seems happier on there! But no one in my year took a gap year who has also heard back, so that's a relief. It's crickets chirping for now.
