    Hi all,

I recently accepted an offer at UMD, and would like to get some tips on where to live. I'll be moving with my fiance, and would like to find a 1 bedroom apartment for somewhere around $1500 per month. (We could potentially even do a studio.) I will likely not have a car, so a location near a metro station or close enough to take the UMD shuttle is a must. I've heard Silver Spring is pretty nice, and there is a metro station right downtown. I was looking at some of the complexes around there. Does anyone have any recommendations for complexes in Silver Spring, or ideas of other areas that would be nice to live in? I'd like a more urban environment, with things to do nearby. Being near a metro station, instead of the UMD shuttle, is also a plus, since my fiance would prefer to avoid driving as well, if possible.

    Thanks!

University Club at College Park is a good option, and its1 Bdr option seems to work with your budget. I asked a friend of mine to go for a tour visit on my behalf and he was pretty impressed with the amenities and building. The photos he sent me looked pretty much the same that those of their website.

    Good luck!

  2. Really? This forum died very quickly! Everyone has already made their decisions? Nothing else to talk about?

For me personally, I'm interested if anyone (especially IR) was accepted into Maryland or Brandeis and will be declining. Thanks in advance for sharing!

I'm still waiting for BU and SAIS JHU but I'll probably just accept my (only) admission to UMD (I'm sorry I can't give you better news, but I hope someone else declines so you can come too!)

  3. I'm glad that post is still helping people :D  I didn't set out to write a treatise when I wrote it, but it just all spilled out.  2012 was a bad time for me, lol.

I'm starting my grad program next fall and I swear I read your post, then sent it in an email to myself with the subject "Mail you should read from time to time".

    So, THANK YOU.

  4. I get it. Every time I see posts like that, I try to think that people are probably stinging from the rejection and trying to rationalize their feelings and confusion about the process.

But I definitely get that it stings when someone puts down a program that someone else might be really excited about, and it's not a very nice thing to say.

(The process is starting to get to everyone, I think.)

I do think that way too, and I'm really not that concerned about results themselves 'cause my cycle is pretty much over and I'm happy with it. But I keep reading these messages and I just couldn't take it any more. Many are worried and anxious about their particular situation, and other ones just don't care at all, and it's a horrible thing. Maybe, I have not been diplomatic with my message, but I don't think a little empathy is too much to ask.

  5. Post something here next time. Spamming in the results, that is not reporting a result and making complaints, doesn't help other students in the future.

So, the message, if presented in this thread, is fine.

I posted it there 'cause I'm not sure every single person is actually following this thread at the same time.

However, you've already posted it for me now and I've stated that I was the one who wrote it so, there you have my complain about egotistic attitudes at the results survey.

  6. ...Someone be spamming and jelly.

I wrote it, and I promise it was not spamming and jelly as I've already confirmed my spot at one particular program.

It has nothing to do with anything else but the fact that those messages are extemely disrespectful to any of the other users at GC that are waiting on their notifications, or even those who didn't get in at all.

I meant everything I wrote and I would write it again. People should care a little bit more about the other ones in the same situation and not just let their egos write.

  7.

Comparative/IR (depending on where the school likes to put their conflict people), with some side servings of policy, methods, and a garnish of everything else for good measure.

haha I see. I received my notification some weeks ago for IR subfield, but I'm not sure if the fact that I'm int'l student and the whole visa process needed makes it faster for us to be notified.

    fingers crossed for you!

  8. Good to know! (I'm waiting on UMD.)

I know a few people who have been accepted to UMD and will likely not attend (not to get your hopes up) but haven't made the decision officially yet. That being said, UMD admitted people early and in mass this year. No one has gotten any rejections up to this point. It may be incorrect to assume that because you haven't heard anything you still have a chance -- this doesn't seem to me like a "silent waitlist" situation.

    Hope that helps cupofnimbus.

    What's your subfield, cupofnimbus?

  9. Well, after so long dreaming about getting into Harvard, I didn't, ha.

I'm still waiting for some decisions, but I'm almost certain my cycle is gonna end up with only one admision and eight rejections.

I came to a conclusion it can help..

I'm so grateful about that only admission I actually wouldnt even cry about not getting into my dream school, or any other. But I wouldn't have even received that one admission if I wasn't so focused on trying to get into my first choice.

So, to all of you who are thinking about re-applying next cycle, my best advice is you keep aiming to your first choice, while considering other universities you think are good fits for you even if they are not in the top 10 or 20.

Best of luck to you all!

  10. In at UPenn. I'm at a loss for words. I'm hoping everyone else who has been shut out so far receives some good news soon (hopefully a few more today who also get into Penn).

Yaaaaay, I'm so happy for you!!!! Well done!

In the end, it's always true: it ain't over 'til it's over!

  11. At least the latter two are policy schools, which historically release decisions later (around March 15th).

SAIS will release PhD info on the 17th now according to their updated website...

Yes, I actually was prepared to get the last replies around those dates, especially after SAIS emailed all applicants saying they'll release them on mid-March. I just want this to be over so I can start planning what's next!

  12. I did. Thom Wall confirmed that there have been no offers yet, and that decisions will be made next week at the earliest-- probably late next week.

For what it's worth (and it's worth a lot given the unprofessional communication some of us have had from other departments) he got back to me almost instantly, and he seemed genuinely eager to let folks know exactly where they are in the process.

Thom Wall is awesome, he's such a nice guy, and always willing to answer your questions! I also had a great first impression of him when I met him last year.

  13. From the results page for Harvard History Phd program:

    • No surprise. I was not particularly thrilled with their application process anyways... what was up with that form (after paying the app fee) that made you answer questions about marriage/children before they'd consider y

Is that true? Did they really do that?

I remember I had to answer a second form with "supplementary information", but I honestly can't recall what was it about.
