Reading Darwin (especially The Origin and Notebook B) is just pure joy for me: "As buds give rise by growth to fresh buds, and these, if vigorous, branch out and overtop on all sides many a feebler branch, so by generation I believe it has been with the great Tree of Life, which fills with its dead and broken branches the crust of the earth, and covers the surface with its ever-branching and beautiful ramifications." I've spent weeks at a time just thinking about that one sentence...

Life's Solution by Simon Conway Morris. Sort of an entertaining read. Just enough real science to be (somewhat) respectable, and just enough wild speculation to be really entertaining. Darwinian Populations and Natural Selection by Peter Godfrey-Smith. This one is a re-read. History of General Physiology by Thomas S. Hall. I'm reading volume 1 right now. It's a 2 volume history. Really cool stuff. Volume 1 covers the ancient Greeks up to the enlightenment. I'm learning quite a lot about the history of medicine that I did not know, and especially the medical profession's historical relation to the biological sciences.

Finally got my rejection letter from UC Davis. I had actually kind of forgotten that I was still on the waiting list there...

Declined Utah. Really friggin' cool program. Hope this helps somebody out there!
-
Just got admitted to UPenn!!!!!!!!
-
You misspelled "philosophy of biology."
-
Yeah..... I was already admitted of the WL at Utah, so I feel like somehow Penn just ain't gonna happen. I know that the two events are (probably) statistically independent, but I mean... rationality is pretty overrated.
-
For anyone that might be waiting on UPenn WL, like me, I got an email from Samuel Freeman saying he thinks they might have more info concerning wait list offers and such within the next 3 days or so.

Revival? It never really had a first vival.

As we approach the end of the admissions season, I just wanted to note that I'm happy to FB with anyone that wants to keep in touch. A lot of my favorite Facebookers are folks that I've met through TGC over the years. Just PM me! If anyone else wants to make themselves available for social networking stuff, make it known here!

Congrats! It's definitely a nice feeling to have successfully defended! (did mine a couple of weeks ago) I hope one of your wait lists comes through for you! If not, try not to lose heart. I know a few people that were shut out when they applied during their second year of the MA, but then did really well the next year when they were applying with MA in hand. Keep the faith!
-
Seconded. I could have been really happy there. If there's anyone out there that's considering an offer from the waiting list or something: it's a super awesome place! It is particularly awesome for those doing philosophy of biology or philosophy of cognitive science.

Well, my lean toward Utah was heavy enough that it seemed morally unjustifiable to leave someone that might be in the Cincy WL waiting till the 15th.
-
Just declined Cincinnati. I feel gross again.
-
I wish I could buy all my TGC compatriots a round (or 6) of beers on the 16th. We all deserve it!!!
-
I removed myself from all but one of my stable of wait lists. I can't imagine what it'd be like to be waiting on four at this stage in the game. My hat's off to you!
-
I'm getting super jumpy about making a decision.
-
This deserves precisely none downvotes.
-
You're my favorite!!! Now I just need to convince them that we do relevantly similar things and so they should give that spot to me!!

Dude, I wudda straight up peaced out lol
