Around $8000 but my dad is paying that off. I've saved enough from work study and summers to pay it myself, but he's making it his high school/college graduation gift to me so I have a little less to worry about in grad school. We'll see how much I'll have after I hear about funding. Siigh.

I would have had more eyes look over my SOP/PS. One of my profs and eventual LOR writers was very vocal about wanting to help me with every part of the application process, yet after having my SOP/PS for 2 weeks she didn't give me much to go with so I awkwardly went with it and definitely didn't write as strong of pieces as I could have. I hadn't mastered the "elevator speech" yet. Also, doing an Honors Thesis. I took an upper level psych course where we designed and implemented our own research ideas, and the entire semester I was kicking myself for not making my research into an Honors Thesis. For undergrads thinking ahead but not yet ready to apply: Talk to professors and make your face known. I hated going to office hours and sent emails asking about RA positions through email and surprise, no one ever got back to me. Luckily, one of my friends was an RA in a lab and put in a good word for me, but I did not go into Senior year with a cohesive research past and my interests felt very disjointed. However, if you do feel scattered, naps are perfect for mulling things over. I woke up from a nap one day and realized I had been holding myself back a bit as far as research interests. Also, friends who are in a similar position but not quite the same field are great because you can sympathize but you don't have to worry that your BFF is going to take your spot at your top choice~ And if you can't get an internship some summer and haven't worked in the service industry, do that. It'll suck but you'll learn about yourself and how to handle being super pissed off without being allowed to show it, which is a pretty good skill to have.

Thinking about getting even just my clothes and some room accessories anywhere is just daunting. My dad keeps reminding me he went to grad school with nothing but a duffle bag* while my mom promises she'll help ship whatever I need. sigh.

Rejected from Ph.d but suggested Masters

Yeah that is me! Thank you. I went ahead and said to consider me. Since making this post I've received an offer from UT Austin for a Phd and I'm waiting to hear about funding. (Also congrats on getting into UNC. I'm currently an undergrad there, so I'm always tickled to see people getting accepted.) -
I've seen a number of UT Austin acceptances in the results search, so here's to bumping this up. I'm waiting on funding, but I'm pretty much set on UT. I currently live in North Carolina, and I am debating the idea of driving my car down or just selling it and finding a clunker once I (hopefully) move down. I haven't had a car through undergrad, so I've either borrowed a car to go to the grocery store or found other ways. I'm definitely open to not having a car and just getting by with an hourly rental car/similar service when the need arises. Is this feasible for life in Austin? Reading through all 12 pages has left me excited to move down, and I've only heard good things from people here that I've told about my acceptance. My only woe is the idea of the heat. NC has some ridiculous fluctuations with some 100+ days, but I'm mentally preparing for the punch in the gut that are Texas summers.

How Are You Coping With The Torture Of Waiting???
likemythesis replied to PsycD's topic in Waiting it Out
Let's just say I started watching season 1 of Grey's Anatomy around the time I finished applications, and I am now almost at season 10, and that Grey's has about 25 episodes a season and each one is 45 minutes long. -
Hi! I currently live in Chapel Hill. There are definitely places to live in around campus, but there's been some chatter about rising rent prices in order to attract a certain crowd, so a lot of people are heading 10 minutes down the road to Carrboro. Still, there are plenty of apartment complexes and decently priced houses hidden about if you're ready to hunt and have Google maps open in another window to estimate walking/biking times. I don't have a car, so I can't offer much in terms of venturing outside of campus unless you want to know about the nearest Target. And the "teenage things" issue really depends on where you are. Carrboro isn't as compact as Franklin St, etc so if most people wanna party, they're heading to Franklin St. However, on my block there are mostly families, so noise is not an issue. I will say, Carrboro definitely has more of the 20-something scene in terms of coffee shops that also hold ballroom dance groups and bands, to Weaver St Market, where you can buy a beer and then go sit outside at a picnic table and hang out. Carrboro is also where the comedy club is and where some pretty casual bars are located as well. You're definitely not going to find the frat crowd~ in Carrboro unless you're at a house party. There's also a convenient Harris Teeter and a bike path that cuts through to one of the main roads leading into campus. I hope this captured what you were looking for!

CONGRATULATIONS.

I was lying on my sofa feeling nauseous from a migraine watching Grey's Anatomy when I saw the email notification. I said, "Oh great just what I want" because I assumed it was a rejection. Two minutes later I was crying with joy on the phone to my parents!

Just got accepted to UT Austin for the Educational Psychology program!! I wasn't expecting to hear anything until April so I'm pretty amazed.

I have until the 27th to respond, which is pretty great. And yeah, I have some dwelling to do. -

Thanks to both of you for your input. I am definitely going to ask about the stats for those reapplying to the Phd while in the Masters, but I'm also definitely going to have a chat with my mentor and my parental before anything is set in stone. I have until the end of the month to respond. -
So I received a slight punch in the gut this morning from my top choice for Educational Psychology. They said I was not selected as a finalist for the Ph.d track but think I'd be a "well-suited candidate" for the Masters program and said to let them know whether to consider me. Part of me is of course bummed, but could this be considered a lucky break? It's better than a straight no, and I'm assuming if I got in I could just reapply for the Ph.d once I finish. Thoughts? Solidarity from any one else who has gotten similar news?

I got a letter in the mail, actually. Just your polite little "this doesn't reflect on you, just on the sheer amount of applicants" blurb.

To whoever posted on the Results Search about the University of Michigan combined program in Education/Psych, thanks for including the comment about there being 96 applicants. It took a little of the sting off my rejection.

I wish I had this thread around the day my applications were due. For some applications, my last LOR writer was a day late, but for others she was two weeks late. I called one school and they said since it was only a day late the admissions folk wouldn't even notice. Unfortunately, I had someone from another school emailing me saying, "Where is it??" and then the person emailed the the LOR writer as well. Luckily that got the point across and the LOR writer turned them in. Didn't help my nerves much though.

Gifts for LOR writers - the best of the best
likemythesis replied to Vader Was Framed's topic in Letters of Recommendation
For two of mine, I found these locally made soaps in my hometown that had cute names like Carolina Girl and Bad-ass Babe. Given that they were people I was on a more informal basis with, I felt comfortable giving them those. I also drew cards for them as well. The one I wasn't as close with I gave a gift card and wrote her a long message in a card. -
Hello! After ticking through threads all morning, I decided it was time for me to sign up and make my first post! I saw a thread for Ed.Psych from 2013, but wasn't sure if I should bring that one back to life or start a new one. I applied to Social and Educational Psych programs, but given that I felt a bigger pull towards the Educational Psych faculty I reviewed, I was hoping to find out about others who also applied places, or at least have someone to stress out with!
