Where do I belong? (Philosophy, Comparative Literature, English)
WendyWonderland replied to awdrgy's topic in Humanities
I think UC Irvine comp. lit would be a great fit for you. They re very heavily focused on theory. However, I think you mentioned nothing about other languages and teaching. I am a comp. lit person and I studied 5 languages and mastered in 3. For my phd I will have to master another one, probably French. Unless you are willing to do all that extra work in language studies, comp lit is not your place. And you have to ask yourself if you would enjoy teaching. That is your future job and you have to teach to gain a fellowship or Tesching Assistantship. -
Hi vertige, It seems like we have similar interests. I have applied to Comp. Lit programs only, and my languages are German, English and Chinese. I am native in Chinese. My English and German are both at the C2 level. My GPA is not very high though and my GRE verbal is miserable. I am very interested in German women authors and Asian American literature. My third field of interests would be translation studies. What about you? I would love to do literary translations between German, Chinese and English. Currently I have one acceptance without funding info from one of the UCs. It is a German track and one of my top choices. I looked at your school list, we both applied to Columbia, Princeton and Johns Hopkins lol. I assure you that I have heard absolutely nothing from them yet. Good luck to us both! Hang in there! Wendy

I think you should totally go and take advantage of the trip and talk to as many professors and grad students as possible! I think the vibe is very important, and if they like you, they might move you up from the waitlist. If you do not go, they might consider you as not interested and choose another candidate over you once a spot is available. Believe me, I visited before I applied, and they admitted me without an interview (they interviewed other people).

2016 Acceptance Thread

Me too. Congrats to all those being accepted! -
Thank you for the insight, I appreciate it! No, unfortunately I don't have 2-3 offers, I have one acceptance but still waiting for funding information. I still feel very anxious and stressed, because I can not afford a phd without good funding. At this point I am simply wondering if they have sent out this email to every applicant or only to a short list. The email was addressed to "Dear Applicants." That's why I am asking if other applicants have received it.

Hey guys, I received an email this morning from Indiana Bloomington, which states that they appreciate our work in putting the application together and also that the faculties are in the early stages of nominating fellowships. It asks us to keep an eye on our applications because they might require additional documents. It also asks us to contact the department if we got offers elsewhere and are going to accept it. While I feel that this email is super sweet, I also feel confused. Are there any other Indiana Bloomington applicants out there? Have you received this email as well? What does it mean? Generic email to keep in touch with us? Also, it would be great to hear from current enrolled students! Thanks!

will stanford interview this year?
WendyWonderland replied to cloverhinge's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
They do interviews for comp lit. They already invited some folks according to the results board. As both a former and current applicant I can tell you that Stanford is decent enough to send you an email around late January to tell you that "all interviews have been sent out" and that "all other short listed candidates have been contacted, thank you for your interest" blah blah. This year, however, I haven't got any emails yet. Good luck to you! Hope it helps! -

Awesome! Congrats! Are you in English or Comp. Lit? Are you going to visit the campus on 1. March? We may see each other there! -
What's the dream?
WendyWonderland replied to doubledogd's topic in Literature, and Rhetoric and Composition
My dream is to help the world understand each other better by storytelling and teaching literature, especially Chinese culture. I want to do research on women of color studies and propose that what we share is more than what devide us. I want to translate and to write. I want to publish and travel around the world by becoming a visiting professor in various countries. -
