  1. Hallo, awesome community ppl! The last week was quite a great plus torturing time for me. I got officially accepted to a MA program in English at Loyola Marymount University in LA, and an unofficial acceptance from CCNY in NYC, English and American Studies. I know for unfunded MA programs we are told to follow the money, but after doing the math it was quite the same since CCNY ‘s tuition is so much cheaper but the living cost in New York is EXTREMELY pricy. So I checked the program, for CCNY, it offers an exchange semester in Europe, it is a Joint Degree. Loyola’s courses seem really awesome, and the professors are really nice, the school is very helpful at helping students to find part time jobs on campus to survive. There is still a possibility that I could get a scholarship for the second year, and the weather is great of course. My ultimate goal is a funded PHD program in a very good school, so my question is, do you guys know at which school I would get more chances? I only applied to Ivy Leagues last fall, and they all rejected me, it was so depressing…anyway, I gathered myself together and I want to do a MA first to improve my English and academic skills and try again in 2 years. It is a big commitment of time and money, so I would really prefer some help! You guys here are so smart and much more familiar with the US education than me, can anybody help to give out some ideas or experiences? Does it matter if you attend a public school or a private school? I would appreciate the help a lot! Thanks in advance! Wendy
  2. Thank you guys very much! Sorry for my late reply, the last week I was so busy dealing with decisions and quitting my job etc. I am accepted to CCNY of CUNY and the program includes a foreign study semester in Europe which really makes me love the program. Moreover CCNY is so much cheaper in tuition. But of course living cost in New York is extremely expensive, so at the end, the money is pretty much the same. It is hard to follow the money, because there are only minor differences. Loyola is a private school, and CCNY is public. I don't know if this could be a factor if I apply afterwards for my PHD. The program of Loyola is very interesting according to the course booklet. It is so hard to chose that it almost drives me insane. I would really appreciate comments since I really do not know which one is better. They both do not have PHD programs. Thank you guys very much again! Wendy
  3. Hey! Thanks for starting the thread, it feels good to be back again! Seeing all these familiar IDs made me very happy! After being rejected from all 8 super phd programs, and after my grad cafe friends told me that I have to improve my English skills, I decided to be realistic and do a second Master in English. I think that after an English MA program I would be more competitive when I reapply for a phd in Comparative Literature, 2016. Now I got waitlisted at Emerson College and I was accepted to Loyola Marymount University. I am still waiting for the decision of City College of New York. The thing is, there are no fundings for international students, and normally no scholarships for the first year. So I have to do several part time jobs to survive. My parents are going to pay the whole tuition and support my living costs for the first year, and then I have to work hard. My questions are, do you guys know how the reputation of these 3 schools are? I think I would go to Loyola, because the program seems great! City College's English program seems appealing too, but the living cost would be so much more in New York, I guess. Can anybody help to give out some suggestions? Thanks! Cheers! Wendy
  4. I am almost sure that it's a rejection for me, but it would also be good news if they would consider me for a MA. After all I am applying for MAs now.
  5. Congratulation! That's wonderful news! So happy for u!
  6. hey, I heard back 2 weeks ago from Cornell, I emailed the DGS and got my rejection the very next day. I think the list is already closed, they are just working too slow to send out rejections. Maybe you should call? I did not call because I am an international student and the time difference makes it very inconvenient. I am also waiting from NYU. They are so slow. They told me I would hear this week. Well, I guess that means tomorrow.... Is it even worth it to cross my fingers? So late in the season! Also I would appreciate it if someone can tell me how long I have to wait for MA decisions. CUNY's ddl is till 01. May... I hope MAs would be easier to send out admission results since there is no funding for international students only competitive scholarships.
  7. Oh, I am going to apply to CUNY this weekend. They want two writing samples, that's why it takes me so long. Hope to see u in NY!
  8. I wrote the DGS and was rejected through the mail. I have to say that I guess the list is closed already. But they should inform applicants. Also waiting on NYU. I think it took NYU too long to reject me!
  9. Yeah, I don't think I would apply to the universities I applied this year, it's a waste of money. I would like to be more realistic. I already have a job, but I spent every penny on application, I have a minus on my credit card if I continue to apply to MAs. What makes me quite angry is a lot of schools require evaluation for international degrees, it's very expensive! Oh, I did not take the subject test, not sure if I will ever take it, it sounds like a lot of work and I have a job..... How important is it?
  10. I think I will apply for 3 MA, then travel at the end of April to the sea to make myself feel better and join the fall 2015 applicant starting from May. When I reviewed my SOP for MA application, I found it awful and I am sure I could do better this year. And I will retake the GRE.
  11. I feel I am losing all my hope. Applied to 2 master program. But I think I might try again this fall. I hope u got into some other programs. I am not relying on NYU, and I think they let us waiting too long, it's cruel
  12. Applied to 2 MAs. And another one this weekend. Then I would join maybe. Anybody knows when I would possibly hear back? I am trying to go out everyday recently and drink with friends...in order to overcome the rejection pain...
  13. Hey folks, just applied to Emerson and Loyola Marymount. Going to apply to CUNY too. Anybody knows how long it takes for the commitee to make a decision on MAs?
  14. Germany has great programs, they start in April and ends in May. They don't require writing samples and recommendation letters which I find weird. Anyway, the tuition is only 300 euro per semester. I pay more for monthly rent. They have great programs in English.
  15. Here. I am going to apply for CUNY. Any current students here to share tips? ). I am still working on it because they want TWO writing samples for MA...TWO
  16. Before I spend another 600 dollars on MA application, I really want to hear from other schools. Where are my other rejections? I need them.....NYU, Cornell....
  17. Haha, that's what I am asking myself everyday now. I don't think I would get into a phd program this year. I think I experienced 2 weeks of depression, and a couple of ppl here pmed me and tried to cheer me up or give advices. It really helped.
  18. oh, I think it's very beautiful!!!! Poetic and romantic. I also read the former threads. Maybe they allied to MAs or decide to work first.
  19. Today I emailed CUNY and asked them a lot of question concerning fit, LoR and WS. Grad cafe has made me smart lol
  20. I am going to apply to CUNY this weekend. Lose hope on all of my phd application, so would consider MA now. The faculty I talked to were all very nice.
  21. Yeah, got mine too. I still have 5 other rejections to come.
