I actually know the answer to the initial query put forth, and it's pretty simple. Graduate school is largely an American creation. It exists elsewhere, but not quite like it does in America and certainly not to the same extent. Combine this with the fact that most of the world's population lives outside of the US and BINGO. I would venture the demographics would be roughly proportional to general worldwide population demographics, augmented a bit by attendant educational infrastructures and opportunities. (I wanted badly to find an MFA program in the UK, and while they exist, they're not quite the same thing--like WTF Oxford??--and funding is an issue. Springing from this, one of my advisors treated me to a history lesson on the development of Graduate School as an institution.)

I got my rejection from Oregon yesterday

University Of Kansas Creative Writing - Fiction, PhD (F14) Rejected via Website on 12 Mar 2014 A 12 Mar 2014 They emailed me to tell me a letter had been posted to the myweb portal. The eventual letter was actually really rude on top of that. Oh well. Discouraging winds blowing from my alma mater. Seems that next to nobody is getting into KU. Maybe I saved myself from some more poignant disappointment than what I've already received...

Laughter is a great response for this. I appreciate your kind words too. I'm up to 10/11. Indiana is my last hope for this go around. I'm not discouraged though -- I knew what I was in for the whole time. A writer who doesn't like rejections will go as far as a skater who doesn't like falling on his ass. They can't stop me and I'm keeping count :-)

Definitely learned a lot in the process. Very thankful for all of the work I read during my research and my newfound understanding of the process and programs. I don't even actually mind the rejections (slightly relish them), it's just the agony of suspense that is mounting and mounting to near insurmountable proportions. As I posted on FB "at least I'm stronger and have more character now". Anyway they can't stop me no matter how hard they try. I'm keeping count too. Thanks for the camaraderie you guys! I'm pulling for you as well, even beyond just getting accepted.

Got rejected by Oregon this morning. Now when I log into the Bama site it just says 'Decision Made' in red lettering. I'm interpreting that badly.

UGH I'm gearing up for round two already.

I'll take your congrats even if it ultimately is in vain... but I hope not. Got rejected by Brown while I was typing that last post; that makes 8/11 -- OH BOY. Also, this morning I got a phone call and it was from the Oregon area code, and I thought, "Golly, this is it...", but no, it was just a solicitor. That really messed with my head. So yeah, Indiana never responded and I'm feeling super antsy too. I will savor the glimmer of hope gleaned from Bama.

GOD I HOPE SO! I just looked at the Bama online app and it says my Application Status is "Referred for review by dept (2/24/2014)" I hope that means they're giving me some heavy consideration and will let me know ASAP!

My guess is those folks were denied in an earlier phase of consideration and then Iowa dropped the ball on informing them. In this game, No News ranks right below Accepted & Wait-Listed, and right above Rejected. GOOD LUCK! I hope your dreams come true.
