  1. They give you a fair bit of freedom. As for the "two-week" rule it's more of a two-consecutive-week rule. Each countries commission differs with flexibility, but I had total freedom in Germany (except when I went to North Africa, they wanted me to send an email with my travel dates so if anything happened while abroad the embassy knew) and I had friends who were in the States for longer than two weeks. If you're selected they will go into every particular before you leave. It's not Fulbrights intention to "be up in your business" but they do want to make sure you're getting along okay and that you're safe (walker is right about the visas). Good luck with the process, it's an amazing year and an amazing experience!
  2. I was a Fulbrighter in Germany 2010-2011 and I can tell you that once you've established your German bank account (recommend Deutsche Bank because of 1. English online banking 2. you can withdrawal at any Bank of America ATM for free if you decide to keep your account open 3. There's a DB in almost every major European city) the Kommission will reimburse your travel expenses. Everything question you ever had will be answered at orientation. It was an amazing year, and I wish everyone the best of luck! PS: I took a German carrier (Condor) from Anchorage to Frankfurt direct and it was the cheapest fare possible ($600 one way, $800 way back) so there was an exception to the "Fly American" rule. Also, they reimburse up to $1200 for a round-trip ticket although that could change because of funding. The German Kommission is AMAZING and actually sent me an email towards the end of the year telling me how excited they were that they could give me $400 more for my return ticket. So nothing is set in stone, they're happy to help you in anyway possible. I owe a lot to the ladies in Berlin! AND Cara Doble....great asset to IIE.
  3. How do you figure that? I've been looking everywhere for a notification date for finalists but haven't been able to find anything. End of February would be AWESOME. Good luck to everyone--
  4. ...must have been in denial when submitting applications without even glancing at tuition costs.

  5. So....Bayern, Saarland and Rheinland have found out for sure. No one else?
  6. Germany ETA-ers: Did anyone who was assigned to Sachsen, find out which city they will be living in? I think most, if not all of the other states have notified their grantees about where they are going to be. Thanks!
  7. I wrote to both of them around the same time you did and they haven't responded yet. Hopefully it's normal!
  8. Germany ETA-ers! Anyone else get the envelope addressing travel and placement procedures postmarked March 30th, from Berlin? It was sent to my permanent address so I got a reading of it from my mom, rather than seeing it for myself. Who should we be emailing to confirm acceptance of the grant (by April 14)?
  9. I'm thinking that probably includes housing. Unfortunately. Although I heard that living off that is pretty doable.
  10. ...I feel like a dog. I'm parked outside my mailbox, ready to jump at the first sign of the mailman.
  11. I applied for the Austrian Commission ETA as well and have yet to hear anything. I thought they were going to make their decisions around the same time as Fulbright, but I reread the email they sent upon receiving our applications and said end of April. Best of luck to your friends!
  12. That's how they should be notifying people...an email as soon as they can and a snail mail letter to follow up with! Leave it to the Austrians to show some compassion!
  13. Meh....Don't feel bad, I did it too. Being resourceful is not a crime!
  14. I'm a finalist for Germany ETA and I just received an email that asked me for the same thing, along with one that asked that I fill out an application in German. Looks like it's standard procedure for everyone, but if you want to get a good indication of how many people were forwarded to the second round in your field, click on the "to:" in the email and there's a (I gave up counting for accuracy 3 times) little over 200 names/email addresses for ETA which means the odds are better than 50%.
  15. I can see it now...."waiting for the final letter helped me lose 10 pounds!!"
  16. At my school we had 20 people apply this year...in 2008 we only had 3.
  17. Hmm...so would this mean that our advisers would know tomorrow then, since they are notified a day before we are? Assuming of course that Friday is the day we all get emails.
  18. gah! I just need to know...it's ruining my week!
  19. Nope, but fingers crossed for an ETA in Germany!
