  1. Don't be afraid to ask for help! Ask as many questions as you need to. There is no such thing as a stupid question.
  2. Hey clinspy, which app do you use? I have terrible writing ethic, so I could definitely use something like this.
  3. Right on! Seriously, standardized tests are dumb and are better indicators of your socio-economic class than your ability to perform well in school.
  4. I think it depends. My overall score was about 70%, but the sub score for the field I was applying to (Molecular Bio) was 97%, so I submitted it and I think it helped a little bit. So I guess the lesson is only submit if you get above 85% in your overall or the specific field you are applying for.
  5. I can't focus on writing my qualification exam and it is due next Friday! I know that I am procrastinating because of the anxiety that I'm going to fail, so I'm in that line between panicking and giving up. I know that I should be working on it, but I sit down and I'm like "let me do this other thing instead." Now I'm getting further and further down the rabbit hole of anxiety and I don't know what to do. Part of the problem is I know I work better on stuff like this at odd hours of the night, but I have to come to lab so I need sleep. So I keep procrastinating and I can't stop and it feels like a never ending spiral. Now I'm kind of debating sitting down with beer/wine/whisky and just chilling and writing because maybe that will help? I don't know but I just can't focus and it is driving me nuts! I kind of just want it to be over and done with so that I don't have to think about it anymore.
  6. I was actually in a similar situation to you. My perfect fit lab did not have the funding to take me, so I had to find another one. I ended up in a lab that I love, but it is completely removed from my field of interest (I'm interested in virology and host-pathogen interactions, but I'm in a lab focused on cardiac metabolism and cell death mechanisms). However, I love my PI and I get along well with everyone else in the lab, and so far I'm not bored with the work. It may not be a perfect fit, but talk to lab 3 and see what projects they have going. If you can find something that you find interesting, go for it. It won't be perfect, but you can always find a better fit for your post-doc when there are more options open to you. At the end of the day, the people you are working with are more important than the work that you are doing. If you love the lab, you won't get bored with the work, even if it is not what you thought you wanted to do.
  7. Hey Sonic16! I'm a second year PhD student at Einstein now, so feel free to PM me with any questions!
  8. HI Dank, Your stats are good for most of the schools on your list, though they are definitely low for Rockefeller, Cornell, and UCSF. I'm glad to see you are retaking the GREs, that would help a lot. Also, you may want to consider the subject test to combat your GPA. However, your research experience looks good and if you can get published by the time you apply that would be awesome! I agree with everyone else that you should look at more middle and lower tier schools, as there is some fantastic research going on at some of them and shouldn't be discounted.
  9. It depends on the school. The first year when I was doing coursework and rotations I got scheduled breaks and vacations. I think I got 2 weeks in winter, 1 week in spring, and then major secular and Jewish holidays (my school is affiliated with a Jewish University). After I declared though it's pretty much like a full time job. I get at least 2 weeks vacation (some PIs allow for more depending on circumstances and how productive you are), but I have to ask for permission to take them. On the plus side, I can take them whenever I want.

    Baltimore, MD

I have worked in Baltimore every summer for the past 5 years and I did not know this. Granted, I never stray too far from the Inner Harbor, but this is good to know. Thanks!

    New York, NY

Hey Peanut! You may want to check out the New York City thread for this question. They have a great rundown of affordable places in NYC. But the short answer is not really unless you decide to live in what is essentially a closet or find some roommates, unless you are super lucky and manage to snag a rent controlled apartment.
  12. Honestly? I think you are putting too much focus on this one class. A recommendation is not a requirement, and they will not count it against you if you don't have it. I don't think there would be a problem asking how important it is for admission, however. Just be sure you don't make it sound like it is because you do not want yo take it, because that will make you immature and unmotivated. Honestly, your best bet is to say something like "I noticed that you recommend p-Chem as a prerequisite. How important do you consider this class in order to be considered for admission?" And end if there with a thank you. Do not elaborate, just politely ask.
  13. I emailed the coordinators when I was wait listed. I told them thank you for the update and that they were my number one choice. I was accepted a week later.
