Hi signalmytransduction, I know this isn't want you want to hear, but I don't know if you'll be able to get into a PhD program with your current stats. Your GRE scores are okay and your GPA isn't very competitive. You have some research experience, which is good and definitely helps, but I'm not sure if it will be enough. Definitely take a couple of years off and get some research experience or a thesis-based Master's. You need to show that you can handle the work load that comes with research, and it doesn't look like that right now. People with your stats have gotten in before, but it isn't all that common. However, with a little bit of work, you will be able to rock the application process!

Ugh, I hate people who completely ignore the rules we have in place and do whatever they want. We have these two guys at the ambulance corps I volunteer with who completely disregard standard operating procedures and just do what they wish. They constantly come in without any notice and pull out of uniform and without a dispatcher, the latter of which is actually required by the Fire Department if the crew is out prior to midnight. It just pisses me off that they get away with it because they pull when they think nobody else is here and they get a crew out. They're nice guys and good EMT's, it just annoys me that I've seen other people in our corps are reprimanded for similar things but they never do because they are one of our consistent crews.

Lol, my family had the same reaction. I was at a Christmas dinner with my extended family, all of whom are lawyers, and they we got on the topic of grad school. They asked me if I was going to be able to get a job to pay off all of my loans from school and I told them I had no loans. I then explained how PhD funding worked and they all stared at my wide eyed. Up until that moment I thought they all knew that I was essentially getting paid to go to school. My father had never looked so proud (and a little bit smug) after I revealed that bit of information.

Manhattan can get pretty pricey, but there are some more affordable areas if you look around. If you don't mind living in one of the other boroughs, Astoria in Queens is a really nice area with a good school system. Astoria is also about a 5-15 minute train ride into Manhattan depending on where you are.

I actually had a pre-med student ask me a similar question. Essentially he said "Why do I need to know bio and chem? I just need to know what to do, like when to intubate and stuff." I stared at him in disbelief. He apparently thinks being a doctor is just like being an EMT except with fewer limits.

If the school does interviews then you are added to waitlist after your interview, depending on how things went. Otherwise its probably a rejection.

I was rejected from all my schools in the 2013 cycle. It ended up being a good thing, because looking back on it I really didn't realize what it was that I wanted to do with my graduate education. Instead I took a year off and worked part time as a private tutor, allowing me to re-evaluate why I wanted to go to graduate school. I worked harder on my application, took the GRE subject test, and took some time out for me. I got into grad school, and got an interview from a school that flatly rejected me the previous cycle. Getting rejected from all your schools stings, but it just means that it is not your time yet. My advice is to figure out your weak points, bolster your application, and try again.
