  1. I don't think it will hurt you that you didn't. I don't think most people send it to the program director unless they were heavily involved in your interview process.
  2. I think i sent thank yous to the program directors as well as faculty. It can't hurt.

Hey Merivo, The area around NYU is very expensive, and so if you are looking nearby it is unlikely that you will find something affordable. A studio in that area will run you about $2000 a month before utilities, which is also roughly what you will be receiving monthly for your stipend. There are cheaper options (my cousin is also a PhD at NYU and found a good deal with a roommate in the East Village, which is not too far from NYU), but you would need a roommate to make it affordable off your stipend. If you really want to live alone you can look at apartments in the outer boroughs. I personally recommend Queens, especially Astoria, Sunnyside, and Long Island City since you can get to NYU pretty easily from those areas using public transportation. If you want a more Jewish community, I recommend looking in Bushwick in Brooklyn or Forest Hills in Queens (I noticed your graduate schools were focused on Judaic studies, I hope I am not being presumptuous).
  4. Full disclosure: I am not in EEB or Comp Bio, just a former employee of an AMNH lab that had a lot of interaction with RGGS. So, I really can't comment on the reputation of the school. I can tell you, however, that though the program is young it is not run by newbies. The professors for the program have all taught at other universities and are adjunct faculty at schools such as Columbia and NYU, so they know their stuff. In addition, they are familiar with what goes into a PhD and the work required for it, as we have had ongoing partnerships with many institutions where we fostered their PhD students, including Fordham, Columbia, Hunter College, and others. Like I said I don't know anything about the program's reputation, but I wouldn't be turned off by the age of the program. The research there is top notch and they handled PhDs long before they became their own institution.
  5. Size 5 shoes are easy to find. Worst case scenario you can order shoes online once you figure out what US size you are.

The South Bronx? That's really the only thing that comes to mind. A lot of previously "bad" areas have gotten a lot safer due to gentrification and the NYPD's broken windows policy.

Private bathrooms for each bedroom is a rare situation period. The only time I have ever seen it was it a luxury apartment complex built specifically for students, but that was in a college town upstate. You are not likely to find a shared apartment with private bathrooms in NYC unless you look at newer buildings, and even then it is still unlikely.
  8. Hi! I got my B.S from Bing so i know a little bit about the area. Johnson City is a pretty inexpensive area. Not as nice, but you could probably get something for about $500 a month. You may end up having a roommate though. If you don't drive, you are defintely going to want to make sure you are close to a bus stop. Binghamton's public transportation is okay and consists mostly of buses. If you have a car, I highly recommend bringing it. Thankfully, the area is pretty inexpensive, so grocery shopping and even eating out is pretty cheap. You'll find a lot of really nice apartment downtown, but many of them are SUPER expensive because they are "luxury student housing" complexes. There is also a facebook group where students share open apartments and recommend certain landlords here: https://www.facebook.com/groups/295412570554385/?fref=nf (I think that link should work). I hope this helps. Good luck!
  9. I completely bombed a presentation today. It started out pretty well, but then when I was analyzing figures from the paper I was discussing I completely blanked on what 2 or 3 of them were. I guess it wasn't that bad, but I felt so embarrassed. I usually rock presentations! I don't know what happened . I even had notes on each figure so that i could talk about them, but I would look at the image and then at my notes and it was like I had never seen them before. And then when I blanked, I got super flustered and had trouble getting back on track. I kind of want to just go hide in a hole somewhere until Monday.
  10. That sounds freaking awesome! I'm a little bit jealous.
  11. Holy S#&t man, that's terrible! I hope the girl recovers quickly and this guy gets the book thrown at him. I hope your house is fixed soon and you guys are placed under watch in case he comes back. Good luck with everything!
  12. I'd pick Lab A, because it seems like that choice will give you more room to grow. However, I definitely agree with some of the other posts which mention talking to the current students in those labs. They can give you a little more insight into what is expected from the PIs in question. Good luck!

It depends. The area immediately surrounding Columbia isn't bad. The further out you get though, things start to get sketchy. Be careful and don't be stupid and you'll be fine.
  14. Congratulations! Sackler is a great school and their research is awesome. Good luck with your studies!
  15. Same here! I'm helping with the events for our visit day next week and I am stoked! It is going to be awesome.
  16. expandyourmind, I am so sorry to hear that. If I could, I would reach through the screen and give you a hug right now and not let go. Thinking "what if?" won't change anything, and it definitely won't help. It sounds like your ex was on a downward trajectory, and it has nothing to do with you. You're going to hurt for a while, but that's okay. Grief is good, but don't let it overtake your life. You're going to be pursuing your dream come the Fall, which is amazing! Grad school is going to be a clean slate, where you'll have lots of new experiences and meet plenty of new people. I don't want to ramble, but if you need to just talk feel free to PM me. I wish you luck.
  17. It depends on the school. I know that at least my school doesn't send many acceptances over what they expect, and they definitely pull off the waitlist. Most of the time the waitlist is because they liked you as an applicant and think that you are a good fit, but there were people who were a better fit who they want to make an offer to first.
  18. Congrats, Funky Days! If you don't mind me asking, where are you heading?
