  9. One of my schools just sent me an automated email saying my application was still under review. Subject line - RE: Your application. Arrgh!

That school has caused me a lot of heartburn. They sent me a email with a link to a survey about their website earlier. Then they sent me a reminder about the survey a week later! I'm so tired of false alarms.

  12. It could just be that this professor is your initial contact, who will guide you through your first year, while you have the opportunity to seek out an advisor during that year. I agree that you should ask the department or check out their website to see if they have information about how the process works.

  14. UofT is pretty hard to get into. I would say that you would need some good research experience in order to get into UofT since it's as competitive as a top 10 US school. Waterloo is still competitive - they take about 10%-15% of applicants, but it's probably a little easier to get into than UofT. I think your stats are good, but you should focus on getting good research experience in order to boost your application.
  15. I'm not too familiar with it, but I've seen a few acceptances to this program on the results board already.
  16. I dunno, but that doesn't sound like a bad idea right now.
  17. I'll take your word on Queen's since I'm not too familiar with them. You have a MS already? Canadian schools usually prefer that you apply to the MS if you only have a BS and then go for PhD after. I've applied to 3 of those schools you listed initially and I plan on applying to the PhD afterwards, should I go that route. I also applied to a few US PhD programs as well.

  20. If everything else is equal and there is a sizable difference between reputation and money at the schools, I would go with the school with the better reputation as long as the money is enough to get by. In Computer Science, ranking and prestige isn't as important as in other fields, since there are a lot of lower ranked schools that do well in a particular sub-field, but it still helps for job placement after graduation.
  21. There very well may have been a few admits sent out already, and it would be interesting to see if it was a POI reaching out to let the applicant know. Last year there was an admit reported in early Feb as well, but most seemed to come out later in Feb.
  22. I believe I saw a couple results in the results board recently, but I'm not sure if those were for EE or CS. Last year most of their admits reported here came out Feb 17-19 so I'm expecting that most news will come sometime next week.
  23. I know that UT Austin did that last year - they had 30 places and sent out 90 admits. Since you've already received an offer from them, when you decide to reject it won't have much impact, unless they've changed for this year, because they won't be sending out another offer. As for the schools you're waiting for, I'm not sure which system they use, but I believe most top CS schools (especially the ones with larger departments that don't care if they yield the exact number of places) use this same mechanism.
