  4. This! Me too. Suddenly I have little tolerance for emails about stuff I'm not so interested in anymore.
  5. That has to be intentional or incredibly ignorant. There's no way they could be that oblivious to the effect that an email worded like that would have on an applicant. I would have started to celebrate before I got to the part about my application being forwarded
  6. I'm thinking that when I was deciding which schools to apply to, I should have factored in how long they take to make their decisions.

      Definitely!

Have you applied to Cornell? I'm really anxious about their answer, since the results have already started coming.

No I didn't apply to Cornell. Hope you hear good news from them soon.

  8. There was an admit on the board today. I'm not sure for who though.
  9. That didn't work out so well for you guys huh?

  11. Woooo! Something to take my mind off grad school applications...if only for Sunday. I'm a Cowboys fan so the prospect of either the Packers or Steelers, especially the Steelers, winning in Dallas doesn't really appeal to me. Then again, if the Steelers do win, I definitely won't be thinking about grad school as much on Monday
  12. Credit history is a record of your borrowing and repaying. So having a credit card, a mortgage, taking out a loan all contribute to your credit history. Banks will look at your credit history - ie how good it is, in determining whether to give you a load or credit card or mortgage and in determining if you should get a favorable interest rate. Good credit history is needed usually to take out a cell phone contract, so the phone companies know that you will pay your bills on time.
  13. Some do. Applicants have received emails or calls from profs on weekends or in the evenings or even at night. I would imagine though that standard system responses will come during working hours.
  14. According to indeed.com the average starting engineer professor makes $82,000 pa while a starting associate prof makes on average $70,000 pa Tenure means that you cannot be fired without 'just cause' - usually severe misconduct. It's means job security and it's intended to give academic freedom,so that profs would be free to provide dissenting or minority views without fear of losing their jobs. A tenure-track job means that it's possible that in the future you will get tenure. Tenure isn't given to new profs, bt if a new prof get a tenure-track job, then that means that at some point in the future (maybe after 5 years) his/her job performance and academic output (research papers, publications etc) will be reviewed to se if s/he should get tenure.

  16. I'm keeping this for when I (hopefully) move.
  17. Congrats on your acceptance and funding! I haven't gone through the process (yet) but from what I've read the school should be able to help you get your visa - you will need to get documentation from them before you can get your student visa, so as soon as you have decided where to go and accepted the admission, you should contact your department about how to go about getting your student visa. I'm planning on getting a bank account and driver's licence when I reach wherever I'm hopefully going - most states (if not all) allow foreign students to get driver's licences, so you don't need an international one. Finding a place is going to be tricky, because you have to start from very early, because a lot of the good rentals near to a college are taken by returning students early in the year, so I'm not entirely sure how I'd go about finding housing. I'd hate to have to commit to a place before I've seen it in person - perhaps a visit (if possible) to the city of your school a few months before you go for grad studies could help you find a place for the fall. Schools often have a lot of housing information (both on-campus and off-campus) on their websites and some schools have listings where approved landlords can post places that are available to staff and students to rent/lease. Perhaps you can look for such a listing on your schools website, or contact the department or international student services about advice for where to live. I just googled your school and found this: http://oisshome.wustl.edu/students/new/newindex.html It seems to answer a lot of your questions.

  19. I'm not in your field so take my advice with a grain of salt. Firstly, I do hope you're successful this year. But if you're not, I would go with the Master's option, since adcomms usually look for preparedness for PhD programs when they consider applicants and if the Master's program does what it says in prepping future PhD candidates then I think that would be the best route. That's not to say that completing your BA in Poli Sci wouldn't help you - I think it would, and would probably help you a lot too, but I think demonstrating 'success'. i.e research experience/potential, in a graduate school environment would give your application a bigger boost. Perhaps someone in your field could give their opinion as well.
  20. Unfortunately, they don't always send email notifications. A couple of the schools I applied to says they will snail mail their decision, while others say that you should check the status website because they may have information and notices to applicants. What you could do is maybe to set up a filter in your email so that any emails from that school get sent via SMS to your phone - that way you don't have to worry about checking your email all the time.
  21. This! It's a roller coaster between despair and hope. Yeah, last year there were some admits to F!cking University. I wish the mods would clean that up so you just have data there - although some of the questions and answers are rather useful.
  22. I certainly hope so. I think I'm getting grey hairs waiting for results!
  23. Another day, no news. Sigh.

good peep (the call I got on Friday).... but I'm a lot more interested in hearing from the other places I applied to.

  24. I can't imagine that they would want to recruit someone that they have not admitted, so I would guess that you're in. I don't know why they have to wait to send you a snail mail though. Perhaps you can ask them for an agenda - the items on it would help to shed some light as to whether you are admitted, but as I said, I think you're in.
  25. It's very possible - did they mention an interview at all, or did they just invite you to help you make your decision? If it's the latter, then its quite likely that you're going to get an admit.
