Yeah, this has been a source of much confusion for us non English folks (me in particular) - it apparently is not advised for applicants in English to contact profs beforehand. Perhaps someone from English can comment on this thread and give you specifics. Or you can search the forums, because there has been multiple threads about this for English in particular. Best of luck!

Congrats on your acceptance! Perhaps you could ask to see where you fall on the wait-list. Sometimes they rank wait-listed applicants and then give out acceptances by rank, once people who had originally received acceptances decline the offer. You could also ask how many applicants tend to get accepted off the wait-list - so you would have a better idea of your chance of ultimately getting an acceptance. As you said though, you have a couple months to wait for someone to decline - I hope they do and you get accepted off the wait-list at your dream school!

I'm international (I'm from the Caribbean) as well but fortunately (or unfortunately) for me I'm on Eastern Standard Time, so my regular work day is full of stress wondering if I'm gonna get an email or phone call. -

That's really too bad that they put that much emphasis on the GRE scores - it really isn't a very good indicator of ability for grad school. I'm happy it worked out in the end though. -

Very nice. I'm glad that things have worked out so well for you. The PI seems to think very highly of you and your work - do you know why they didn't offer you admission? -
That's a nice idea. I wish I had something to add, but not as yet. Perhaps you could add the dates for the visit weekend at Boulder to the Congrats on your interview - have they accepted you as yet? Another resource for seeing when schools have started making contact is the survey on this site: http://thegradcafe.com/survey/index.php?q=%22computer+science%22

Think of it this way - while you're waiting at least you'll get updates from the department through fb. If they reject you, then you can just unfriend them.

Congrats! You've decided to take up the position? -
Well, that's assuming the places you applied to only accepts 10% of their applicants. I would suspect that some of them might accept more than 10%. You can check by looking at the acceptance rates that Peterson's has here http://www.petersons.com/graduate-schools.aspx Just search for your program and school. Of course, the info Peterson's has seems to be a rough guide, since they don't seem to separate Masters and PhD applicants, but it seems a reasonable guide IMO.

I gave a thank you card and it was appreciated. I've read that some profs might take offence if you give something expensive, so if you are going to give something, make it thoughtful and just a token and after they've sent in all your letters. You don't want the mis-perception that you're giving them something so that they write the letter for you. In your case, since you're asking them in multiple stages, perhaps you can send thank you emails/phone calls after each stage and then a card or small token when you're done.

Agreed with arkel. An essay format is the most common. A few people use headings, so that their SoP has headings with a paragraph or two under each, but I don't think I've seen a letter format - I wouldn't advise that at all.

newms replied to coffee or death's topic in Interviews and Visits
Firstly, congrats on getting your interview. If it were me, I would re-affirm my interest in the school, but check to see if a phone interview would be possible dues to the costs involved - there is nothing to lose from asking. If they say no, then it's really up to you if you are able to spend the money to go there for the interview. Be aware though that in some instances (I don't know about your field, or this particular school) they don't accept people who don't go for the interviews. -

Hey achapiro, If its a recruiting event then I think they would probably be happy to accommodate you later on - you'd miss the group events, but at least you'd get to see the campus and talk with profs and students. The schools would probably be able to help you get your visa as well. Perhaps if and when you do get invited to a recruitment weekend, you can email the department as soon as possible about your visa issues and ask if you can visit later on while you get your visa. All the best!

What is the latest you will hear back from a school?
newms replied to neuropsych76's topic in Waiting it Out
It's not common, but it is possible if you are on a wait list. I'd imagine that people who are waitlisted could get accepted after April 15. Of course, some programs for whatever reason, have sent out rejections in May or later. -

Creative things to do with rejection letters
newms replied to HyacinthMacaw's topic in Waiting it Out
After I got all rejections last year, I stuck one on my fridge for motivation for this year. Eventually I felt I was sufficiently motivated and discarded it. -
I use Turnitin and if you have a quotation that's not in quotation marks but is otherwise cited, then Turnitin won't identify it as a quote and will mark it for review. It sounds like that is what happened. If so then you don't have anything to worry about as you cited the sources (even if it's not the original source, it's still ok)
