  1. If you haven't decided if you're going to attend this school yet, just thank the prof for the offer and let him/her know that you'd be happy to work with him/her. Did the prof ask if you will be attending? If so, you can just tell them that you're going to need some time to make a final decision, as politely as you can. Congratulations on the admit and good luck with your other apps!
  2. That sounds really good! All the best!
  3. I suggest you call instead. See the numbers in my post above yours.
  4. A recruitment weekend is generally for the school to try to recruit you. They use recruitment weekends to impress applicants so that they decide to come to that particular school rather than choose another. So odds are you're going to be admitted unless things are dramatically different in your field. Are they reimbursing your travel? - if so I'd say that was further proof that they want you.

  6. Just hang in there! There really is no way of knowing from the information you have there. What could help you try and figure out what is happening is to look at the results from last year on the survey from that program. Were there admits that were sent out at different times - or were the admits just sent out at once and then everyone got a rejection after? It's not perfect but it can at least give you an idea of when the program sends out results. In the mean time try not to panic!

  8. Is it a terminal Master's that you would be applying to? Your GPA looks ok and obviously the higher it is the better. However, the more important thing that adcomms consider if your research experience and potential. Your research experience will help you a lot. Now, if it's a terminal master's then perhaps this won't be such an important factor, and other factors such as your Statement of Purpose and your letters of recommendation will be more important. I would definitely encourage you to get more internship and research experience that will lead to strong recommendation letters. Applications at top schools are competitive, but I think you're on your way. Here's a document from a Stanford MS (I believe that Stanford's MS is terminal), that highlights the admissions process: http://nlp.stanford....rthik/DAGAP.pdf All the best!

  10. I prefer email too. Although, a phone call would be pretty good too - it's highly unlikely you'd get a call saying you're rejected (I'm guessing you'd only get one like this if you had a relationship with the POI and s/he wanted to give you the bad news) - so once you get a call, you know its either for an interview or an admit. An email can go both ways and that moment before you click on the email can be terrifying because of the anxiety.
  11. I got the same email satirtat got, about 4 days after I had applied in December - so I imagine that you should have received it as well. The status check site that the email pointed to shows whether they've received and processed your documents and they processed them fairly quickly for me. I'm guessing your email might have gone to junk - perhaps you can call the department at 413.545.2744 or the grad school at (413) 545-0722. I had to call both places when I was wondering if they had received on of my LoRs - both places were friendly and helpful.

  13. Congrats! Good luck with the interview!
  14. Let's share information on when different Computer Science departments are having visiting weekends/recruitment weekends/open houses this year. I think someone mentioned that CMU is having their open house on Feb 25-26.

  17. Yeah that's odd. Perhaps the other 2 groups didn't have spaces, but this prof likes your application - is he in bioinformatics? If so, that field has a lot of overlap with machine learning/data mining, so maybe he's interested in you for that purpose. Or, it could be that he's just interviewing you on behalf of the adcomm and then the adcomm makes a decision based on his input - that's just a guess really. In either case, all the best!
  18. Excellent news! Be sure to add this to the survey and all the best for the interview! Some schools do phone or skype interviews for CS and they seem to be the same kind of thing that most interviews are about. They'll likely want to get a feel for how well your interests fit with their research, so be prepared to answer questions about things on your SoP and on other parts of your applications as well as to briefly describe your research experience and interests. It would also be good if you had questions prepared to ask them. You never know though, as sometimes they seem to ask questions out of left field - almost literally - I read where one guy ended up talking about baseball during his interview! In any case, it's definitely a good sign and it means that they are interested in you. Good luck!
  19. That's really some very good advice. It really shows how interested you are in those particular schools. I hope you're successful this year!
  20. No news is good news, right?

  22. I think the OP is concerned that the PI from lab A might not want them or not have space for them and then the adcomm or PI B might think that the OP is not too interested in lab B and so they just reject the OP. It can be a delicate situation, but as MoJingly said, just be honest and let them know that you'll be happy at both labs and that you're very interested in both, but that you would prefer to be based in A if possible because of your experience and current interests. Easier said than done, I know. Best of luck and congrats on getting the interview!
  23. Cool. I also applied to Alberta Masters CS program. What area are you in?

  25. Apparently it does happen for some schools. I'm concerned about this since I'm international and it might take a while for me to receive the mail. I really don't know why those that send letters can't just send an email first.
