  1. It could be positive, but it may not necessarily mean what we all hope it does, so don't get your hopes up too much just yet!
  2. Most of the UIUC Masters admissions came out in February last year with a blanket rejection for everyone else on March 15.
  3. I heard from Toronto (rejection) last year in mid February and I think UBC sent out their results in Feb/March last year. So you have some more waiting to do

  5. I evaluated schools from scratch this time around and came up with a list of schools that I thought gave me the best mix of application success versus research quality and fit. It turned out that the schools I found to be best for me to apply to this year were different from the schools I applied to last year - I really didn't choose my schools well last year. I'm not sure how I would have approached applying to the same school again though - or even if I would have tried to.
  6. I would guess 'Long Term Relationship' but I'm not sure if that's what it is for this context - maybe 'Lead Technical Representative'?

  8. I was about to congratulate you until I realized you said you dreamt it happened. Somehow when I first read that sentence my eyes missed that word! I'm going crazy with the waiting too. I can hardly think about anything else than my applications.

  10. It would be useful to pick his brains about the program to see if this is the pace you really want to go to should you be accepted. I don't think it really makes a difference if you ask him now, or when you arrive for the interview. Perhaps you can ask him about life in the town and about your potential advisor - how he or she works, and how is their advising style - anything that would help you make your decision should you have to be choosing between this school and another.
  11. I'm in a different field, but that's all I see on Wolverine Access as well - just my profile and application information.

  13. I don't know how I would going to react. This is my second go around and last year I wasn't myself for a good 2 months after my last rejection. I feel a lot better about my chances this year though - last year this time I was already anticipating all rejections. This year I think the odds are definitely in my favor.

  15. Publications are easily the best way to improve your application chances. You don't need to have a publication to get into a top tier (lets say top 30) CS school, but you probably do need to have some research experience, which you're working on. I do think you have a pretty good chance at a top 30 school. For a top 10 school, you would almost certainly need a publication.
  16. I really hope you get in!
  17. Congratulations!
  18. At the very top schools (at least in CS) the acceptance rate is pretty close to essentially zero (<5%). At the very top schools (like MIT, Stanford etc) there are thousands (as much as 3000) of applicants with <100 admission places. Those aren't good odds even if you have an exceptional background. There would probably be hundreds of applicants with a similar profile as yours and hundreds more with a better profile.
  19. Yep it's definitely good that she called. It means they are definitely interested in you. It doesn't guarantee admission, but your chances seem to be better than most at this time.
  20. Congrats! It definitely sounds like an interview, and he wouldn't have asked you to come unless he liked your application. So while its not a guarantee of admission, it's definitely a good sign. As for what you should wear, what you have described sounds appropriate. I think flats should be ok and if you're more comfortable in them than heels then you should wear them - you don't want to be worrying about something else during the meeting. I think the purse would be ok. I'm a guy so I'm not an expert on women's attire, so perhaps someone else can give their advice on this. The meeting will likely be about what you requested it for initially - about your research and his and how your interests fit with what the department is doing. Be prepared to discuss anything in your application and also be prepared to ask a few questions about his research. Best of luck!

  24. Congratulations! it sounds like you're in! If a prof wants you, it's very likely the department will recommend you for admission and it's extremely unlikely that the grad school would deny you after your department has recommended admission. The grad school only usually double checks that you have met the minimum requirements for the school and presumably the department wouldn't have recommended you unless you did.
  25. Yeah, you're gonna have to customize your resume for a job rather than for grad school. Maybe emphasize things that would be relevant to the job and leave off things that might have use for a grad school resume but wouldn't be of use to the job you're applying to.
