Realistic Expectations for Admissions Decisions?
newms replied to TVDOC's topic in Communication and Public Relation Forum
I'm not in your field but I would suggest browsing the result page on this site from last year to see when the schools you applied to sent out results. Also you could try browsing the departmental calendars. Some departments in my field schedule things like 'Admissions meeting' on their calendars. -

Emailing professors after the application is submitted?
newms replied to katerific's topic in Applications
I had one prof who I met with in August who said I should let him know when I applied so that he could look out for the application. I did. I haven't sent any other such post application emails, but I don't think that it necessarily hurts, at least the prof will remember your name which I don't think is a bad thing. Of course it all depends on the strength of your application.Just don't be a sycophant or expect a response.<br> -
Equations or ideas to rank potential professors
newms replied to coffeecoffeebuzzbuzz's topic in Waiting it Out
Those are all great metrics. For fun they're always http://www.ratemyprofessors.com/ which has a 'hottness' (yep, that's how they spell it) factor. -
Yeah they could just call you up. I remember one applicant saying last year that a phone call woke her up in the morning and she was glad that she missed it because it was a prof calling out of the blue - she would have been groggy had she taken the call then, and she was able to call back.

Yeah your best best is probably to try to use this year to improve your resume, maybe take some graduate level classes if possible and try to establish firmer LoR contacts. Alternatively there might be some schools that have later deadlines such as in February or in March, however these might not necessarily be the schools you would ft best at. If I were you, I would take this year to improve my resume, research schools and profs that I wanted to work with and take my best shot at applying for Fall 2012.

I'm on my plan B. I currently have no plan C but I will definitely still want to go to grad school if I don't get in again this year.

Great news! I hope they come through for you ASAP!

Thanks much for that link - that's a great resource. I particularly liked Randy Pausch's talk on time management. I had seen his 'Last Lecture' but I hadn't seen that one before. Good stuff.

Thanks for pointing to that document (link here) It looks to be a good read even though its a bit dated. I had a good chuckle at the authors' suggestions on how to find the top research papers in AI:

Have you seen your transcripts yourself, so you could point out exactly where it shows the degree that was conferred? Alternatively you could send them a certified copy of your degree. I don't know if you'd be able to get this to them at this time, but some schools I applied to asked for that and I think it would settle any questions they have.

There's probably a good chance they won't even notice it - you didn't at first. So I wouldn't sweat it either, they'll go straight for what's on it and will be more interested in its contents.

I agree with sputnik as long as the person is well respected professionally. She can write about your work and your ability and as long as there wasn't anything negative about her with regard to her termination, then she should still be a good option to recommend you IMHO.

I'm in Computer Science so I won't comment on your chances, but I'm wondering if in your field it is recommended to get the Master's before a PhD? Because in most of the sciences, if you ultimately want to get a PhD usually programs recommend that you apply directly to the PhD.

As a former high school teacher, something that helped me is to remember that it's ok to say you don't know the answer to something if a student asks you about something you're not familiar with. Tell them you'll look it up and then at the next class/lab/tutorial follow up on it. What you should never do is BS a student if you don't know the answer - they'll see right through you.

I know how hard that can be and what's worse, from experience, is having to tell people that you didn't get in when they ask. But hang in there, hopefully you'll get some positive news in early February.
