Just curious, is GVSU still considered a less competitive program even with 469 applicants (according to ASHA EdFind)?

I continue to see posts suggesting GVSU as "less competitive", but I'm not sure if should still be considered as such, as they received nearly double the applicants as some of the other programs in the state of Michigan. And to add to this thread, I believe work experience related to the field is the most beneficial in the application process.

I was a nanny while in undergrad. Just finished my first year of grad school (8 years post-undergrad), and was only able to work part-time the first semester. Then my schedule would not allow it. It's tough.

I was also an SLPA in the Colorado public schools for 3 years. However, due to the low pay (~$18/hour), it was not a salary I could live on for an extended period of time. While I did learn A LOT, now being in graduate school, I see how much I DID NOT know. I know for a fact my experience helped me get into grad school and confirmed that SLP was a field I wanted to continue in. I also will say that I attend grad school in a state where SLPAs are not utilized, this may have changed my professors/admission committee's viewpoint.

I applied to all schools in Michigan. Waitlisted at GVSU. Accepted at MSU (where I did my undergrad). Denied everywhere else. Undergrad GPA similar to yours, however I have been out of school for awhile (6 years), and have worked as an SLPA I agree that every school looks at the "whole picture." I think many people have a tendency to say GVSU is less competitive, and while that may be true (right now), I think that is due to the fact that it is a new program, not that they view applicants differently.

@mheroux92 I am also on the wait list at GVSU and have not heard anything since the initial wait list email notification. (I did not do my undergrad there either, if it makes a difference)
