  1. I sent out the last of my supplemental information today out of 11 apps. So relieved to be totally finished, but now the waiting...
  2. I agree. At this point in the process visits to faculty could appear as brown-nosing. I could be wrong, but the risk is enough to prohibit me from visiting. And the added cost...
  3. In this case I was able to list 2 award that I have received for graduate study, but as for savings or any other income to contribute I was SOL
  4. I have been relishing these past few days of quiet before the storm, but there are some days that I wish I could go to sleep and wake up in March.
  5. My final total is a mere 11 programs
  6. I do not think that you should panic. You have already applied to 10 schools for MA programs. Typically MA programs have less stringent requirements for candidates than PhD programs. Since you mentioned that your school sends a letter explaining the lower GPA's I would imagine that this would not be as great a cause for concern. Also, your GRE score is decent. The AW writing is off concern, but can be couter balanced by other things, your LORs, personal statement and writing sample will be quite important. I would recommend possibly applying to a couple lower ranked programs that are a great fit for your work. Fit is key. Remember that if the program is not a good fit for your work then it is not really worth applying. I am not a sociologist, but these would be my recommendations. Good luck!
  7. I applied early. It could be on its way, or perhaps it was an error?
  8. I am applying for a PhD in History. I love history, but if I had to choose another discipline I would have to say philosophy and mathematics focusing on logic. It is such a beautifully simplistic language. Also, I am a US historian. I have studied Chinese history, but I wish that I had had more time as an undergraduate to study it.

  10. I was hesitant to leave to visit friends for the holiday season, but I convinced myself that sitting in front of a computer screen and worshiping the mailbox were not healthy pastimes. And so with great reluctance I packed and left. When I returned I was very excited to see a healthy large envelope from Harvard in my mail box. "Surely it is too early!" I thought, but with great excitement I opened the package anyway to find a Guide to Harvard admissions booklet. I suppose that I am appreciative to have received something, but why this and why now? It seems a little late for a guide to admissions... Oh well. Happy New Year all!
  11. I think that it is amazing that the application process can make us so neurotic. I am glad to hear that I am not the only one having these sorts of dreams.
  12. I am wondering if anyone has had strange dreams lately? I found myself having a nightmare in which one prominent school sent the first round of applicants a komodo dragon to fight to prove their worth. A letter accompanying the beast explained that if the applicant defeated the dragon he or she would progress to the next round of the application process. Very strange. I suspect that I have achieved the height of nerdiness.
  13. For your consideration... Mad Men (any season) Eyes Without a Face Any number of B-movies: Five Deadly Venoms Crippled Avengers Chinese Super Ninjas The Last Dragon And for a period feminine power film I suggest Elizabeth
