Hello! I have not applied to any Africana or African American Studies programs, but some of my work does fall under the branch of African American Studies. I was considering applying to some programs, but I ran out of time. Good luck with your Cornell application!

Last year when I applied I was accepted, but when I visited the departments I did not feel right about it. I ended up becoming a VISTA for a year, dedicating my time to fighting poverty. It has really been a great experience and I would highly recommend it to anyone. The living stipend is quite low, but the experience has taught me a great deal about the way non-profits work.

Any WashU applicants out there?

It seems that this varies with the school and the year. Even though it may not be the official policy of the graduate school to contact by phone or email, but to only snail mail results the potential advisers for some students may wish to contact via phone or email. Even then I think it varies by faculty member. I received an email acceptance from the Director of Graduate Studies, but the results listings say that in the past people have received those acceptances by phone. Don't give up hope yet!

Congratulations to the prospective Penn State student who was invited to attend interview weekend. I wonder if they have invited all the students they intend to extend offers to.....

I noticed that there is a post for a rejection from Penn State. Has anyone else received new from Penn State? I frantically logged on today to check status with my heart pounding out of my chest, but there is no news. Perhaps no news is good news?

I applied to a total of 11 schools. I should hear from the last of them by the end of March.

In my experience open houses are a way for universities to woo you to their program. It is also an excellent way for them to feel you out as a candidate. They will be able to determine if you are a good fit for the department and you will be able to evaluate your level of comfort with your potential cohort, faculty, etc. Congrats on the invitation and have fun!

Melusine, thank you for the interesting discussion. Beauty and the Beast was one of my childhood favorites. It is so interesting to read your evaluation. Oh, the innocence of youth In one of my SOPs I began by taking about school X and ended by discussing why school Y would be a good fit. Luckily for me I discovered this before submitting.

Hmmm.... Good point. I have been having strange dreams as well. Perhaps if I were to learn the fate of my app. it would make them even stranger. I am very curious about this process though.
