I was keeping my cool really well for the past three days and now I am too hyped. I need these three final results please!! I have started writing research proposals for three programs/projects in the UK and Norway and am having trouble throwing my heart into that without knowing for sure.... AHHHHHH! -

Holy shit this compelled me to take a look at the Physics page.... Wow do these people not realize they have an entire forum to discuss and share their insecurities, unprompted calls to the departments, and dreams of getting off the waitlist. That is literally all we do on the Literature page: "omg I am going to get shutout" "called the department" "waiting is terrible" "Ahhhh!" (I am a part of this mind you). -

Just got a call from a Utah number.... I didn't apply anywhere there (are there even schools there? ? ) And yet here I am freaking out over the fact that the call cut out before they said why they called... Let's get these last few schools in please so I can move on. -

On the prestige and rank of a school I think it calculates in a lot. I think there was a study that was posted on here months ago, and it was just a single case study so not representative of an entire system, but the unknown schools did tend to suffer and people from them had their work questioned more. I thought about this quite a bit, because I do not know how well though of FU Berlin is in the US. I didn't know much about it until after I graduated, which doesn't mean much per se. But it's definitely not know on a Cambridge, ETH Zurich, or Tokyo leve, where everyone in the fields where they are relevant knows of these schools even in the relatively closed off in the US world. I see it this way: You have to prove your credibility and people give you the benefit for the doubt if you're from what they see as a 'top' school and then you just have to live up to that. Whereas if you are from a state school somewhere, you have to first prove you on a level with other applicants by going above and beyond. -
I turned UCSC and UC Davis to projected rejections after the UCSB official one. I only got 3 I'm waiting on. Stanford and UBC seem like busts considering how poorly my application has been received elsewhere. UVic also has small cohorts, but I felt my fit was good there. Either way next week should deliver that final nail...

UCSB rejection this morning ?. Also rejection from UCSC seems implied now. I have not thought about thanking my writers in any meaningful way. I just had conversations with all of them... now I am wondering if I should or if for Germany that is fine... -

What are we thinking on UCSB/UCSC? Like think they've probably notified who they will and we are all just waiting on our rejections or think some stuff is still rolling out. I wish everyone did it like Michigan.... -

Got my rejection too. I appreciate it as well. Though I think Michigan is also the school that fucked up last year and sent retractions of acceptances. So if that's right then I still applaud them for the job this year, while not last year. -

I woke up to the UCSB acceptance on the board. Congrats!!! I am really excited for whoever you are. However, I am really down now. I think UCSB was the one I was like "well I fit SUPER well there so..." Now I am just sitting here wondering how I messed up on applications so badly and what I can do to improve... -

That's really rough. I mean you will get through it of course and all that. But it's tough to have that conflicted excitement about starting your PhD and the coupled disappointment of leaving that space behind. You will be refreshed soon. We all just need official news and then a vacation from waiting/deciding. I am going through a similar situation potentially. -

I've been experiencing the exact same thing! The idea of not rushing through my thesis to get my official degree submitted to a school seems nice. Having another couple months to enjoy myself a bit more. I am not sure how, but somehow even with only two official responses it feels like a shutout, but nonetheless I think the forum's mood today is helping. Gotta always remember that the institutions are just that. -

Oh now the Davis and Santa Cruz calls that I did not receive make me feel like implied rejections. Why won't they update their portals already!! I'm really hoping for Alberta, UCSC, and Davis to post this week.... I need some news. Also, would be nice to get the official rejection from UIUC. -

Dude I realized this process has like temporarily made me needy towards my friends. Like all the sudden my feelings of not getting accepted morph into this weird thinking which of my friends would reject/waitlist me if they could! -

I've been trying to work this out. I am starting on my MA thesis and if I get shut out I would drag it out a bit more to keep my EU visa and try and develop a dataset of novel that I can somehow argue are the Cli-Fi genre (not clue yet how exactly I would include/exclude here). I would then use that data in my MA thesis to show changing topics, moods, etc. in climate fiction as public discourse around it has changed or as major climate benchmarks are met. I would try and present that part of my thesis, plus the dataset, at a conference and get it published. If I do get in I won't have time to learn what I need to do all that for my MA thesis and it would just be more me reading one or two novels. I teach online already so I would probably keep doing that, but to be honest I kinda loath it right now because its basic English and is uninteresting so if I could I might work on a few other data projects and try and get part time data analysis work. I'd live with my partner in Leuven, maybe take a housesit in Italy/Spain/Portugal if I can find one, and play some video games. That was probably WAY too specific. The extent to which I know what I will do is helping me to cope with feelings of being shut out........ -

I was looking at this last night with my partner and so confused. I was like, "this English Ph.D person scored in the 99th percentile in quant and written, but like 70th in Verbal. That's weird as fuck." But then I gave it a thought and figured you'd inverted them!
