  1. I, too, am only applying to NYU and CUNY, although not in the same area as you. I haven't heard from either yet, although I think NYU is out b/c they usually notify acceptees by 3/1 in my area. My preference is actually CUNY, but they are SLOW, SLOW, SLOW... Anyway, good luck!

  2. I think the "keg party" sentence actually speaks very highly of you and will be memorable in the readers' minds (in a good way).
  3. I have to say I disagree. People fought long and hard for those rights, people who had been majorly screwed by their "recommenders." IMHO, by waiving your rights, you demonstrate naivete and a lack of self-esteem. Anyone who refuses to write an LOR because you wouldn't waive your rights must not want you to know what hu is writing about you. If hu is saying all good things, why wouldn't hu want you to see? Only people who have something to hide want to stay hidden... "Transparency" is a hot topic these days and people serving on adcomms know this...
  4. Thanks for the input. I think I'll likely take it, as I am finding the current brush-up courses useful, and I am probably not as much of a quant jock as some of the other students may be. I think I'd rather be on the side of "occasionally glad", if you know what I mean...

  6. Thanks, chimerical -- I think what you say makes sense. I am retaking linear/matrix algebra and statistics now (took them 15 years ago and remember very little) and I agree that one quarter of calculus won't hurt. So thanks for the input!
  7. Thanks for the replies. One prof suggested that I take econometrics before the fall, but then two others laughed when I told them what the first had said and said econometrics was not necessary. I guess it all depends on with whom one is working, but I don't want to limit myself right out of the gate. I've never taken econometrics -- is calculus helpful/required for econometrics?

  10. Just so you know, when I applied to a tenure-track position at a community college several years ago, I sent in my resume in November and got the offer in June!!! Welcome to academia ...
  11. I'm in the same boat -- I had an interview last Monday, too -- and it's so hard not to stress. I am telling myself that I was among the first to interview, that they may be interviewing even now, and I am hopeful to hear by the end of the week. I suppose that I may be in touch with them if I don't hear anything by the weekend, but in my experience, deadlines are often loose in academia...
  12. I would not discuss whether you got in or not. Instead, when asked about your current school, I would say something along the lines of how great it's been working with this group of scholars, but that now you are ready to expand your knowledge and learn from others (such as those at the school which you would like to attend).
  13. So good to know -- thanks!
  14. Wow! 8pm, huh? That's hardcore! In truth, I was just joking around, playing on my user name -- I actually get a lot out of the forums and am glad to have others with whom to share the journey. And while my memory and my energy are not what they were at 27 (when I got my masters), I find that my 20+ years of post-college work/life experience are an asset in areas such as generating research ideas, teaching, presenting, networking, and sniffing out OPM. I try to be happy with what I have, sometimes with more success than others...

  16. I am debating whether to take a calculus class before beginning an OB PhD program -- any thoughts?
  17. I agree. Send the e-mail.
  18. I applied to two programs, but one was a real long shot. Both are in the area, as I won't be moving elsewhere. Honestly, I'm not sure what I'll do if I don't get in. I am in my 40s, in the midst of a second career, and I feel like I have some momentum going right now in terms of starting school that I'm not sure I'll have a year from now. I guess I still have another week or so to delay thinking about it...
  19. Don't worry -- the waiting is getting to me, too! Since you've interviewed, why not send an e-mail to someone with whom you met? Reiterate how excited you are about the program and ask when a decision on your candidacy will be made. Good luck!

  21. To be waitlisted is to be stuck in the first level of hell. (My mother is an English Lit person...)

  24. Why choose between life sciences and literature? I just finished "The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks" by Rebecca Skloot -- what an awesome book!

  25. March is definitely it! In fact, I feel pretty confident that, if I got in anywhere, I'll find out this week. So this week is it -- jinkees!
