Not crazy at all! A former prof from my master's program told me I should do that if I didn't get in. It's not about taking a stand -- more about demonstrating your high level of commitment. You might want to approach the prof in terms of "exploring alternatives"... GOOD LUCK!

I'll be 43, in the midst of my second career. It may seem old to those of you in your 20s and 30s who have your whole lives planned out , but you really don't know where your path will lead you. This is the perfect age for me to go back to school because I've already proven to myself what I can do professionally, I've already had a child, and I am in a financially stable place.

I was advised by a former prof in my master's program not to apply to the PhD program b/c it was a bad fit for me, so I didn't apply. Now every time I get e-mail from that school telling me about some alumni activity or asking me for $$, I want to scream. Three came in yesterday. Aaaaaaaaaaagh!

Via e-mail from Erin Billy, Founder and Director of TM: "Hi there. Thank you for contacting TestMagic about our forums. Unfortunately, they are 'down' right now, meaning they are not functioning. The site had a hard-drive failure, meaning we need to rebuild the entire forum. With luck, we will be finished within a few hours, but it's appearing more likely that it will be longer, perhaps a day or two, before the forums are up and running again. I apologize for the downtime and am working as hard as I can to get them up and running."

I e-mailed TM -- the site crashed and they said they have to rebuild it from scratch!!! They estimate it will be back up in a few days...
