  1. Mine are looking at my SOP, LOR, and thinking "great", then my transcript and thinking "not bad", then my GRE and having a collective coronary. Sadly not in that order.
  2. And judging by the spelling of 'honoured', a fellow Brit..
  3. For my area anyway, the funding we recieve is in return for time we spend (usually) teaching, or researching, in addition to our studies. So it's not like we're getting something for nothing.

    Last.fm

So, seen this on another forum and thought it might be fun to do the same here! I'll post my last.fm profile, then the next person clicks on my link and it tells you how much you have in common with them and "shared artists". C&P that bit, then post your profile, the next person will do the same for you, and so on! Anything to pass the hours.. I'll go first! http://www.last.fm/user/twelfthredrose
  5. Yes that's where I got it from, though when I was there it was clusterf#%k to the White House
  6. I got a letter from my university's career service, and my hart skipped a beat. This is going to be a long couple of weeks
  7. I reckon we might hear a few this week; but the real clusterf#@k to grad school will be next week
  8. I haven't got a straight answer, but I'd ring the office of admissions and ask. I did, UIUC wanted me to send some evidence even if I wouldn't go without funding, but UIC said wait until a decision.
  9. Usually I live up to my screenname, but when it comes to getting applications together and sent away I'm !
  10. I've annoyed people with my neuroticism during the application, so much so that people I hardly ever see but are still 'facebook friends' seem to know all the places I'm applying to! Facebook is just my place to vent. I'll probably post the US results in a "joke" way come rain or come shine; but there's one prestigious course in my home country that I don't think I'll tell anyone about if I get accepted because I know a couple of people applying to the same one.
  11. Dear all schools, Please accept me. Even if I haven't applied to you, accept me, and fund me. Thank you and all the best, Sanssouci.
  12. I feel so human when I have hope despite all the evidence stacked against an offer I hope they refund application fees (if this does happen) too!
  13. I just came back from the cinema and noticed "civis" meant "people", so apparently they had some latin influence. I have a friend who does linguistics, he's made similar complaints to the ones listed, I just like winding him up now - Mine: Almost invariable: "What do you study?" "Politics" "What party do you support?/What's your position on..." I want to talk about Hegel
  14. The Scott victory was more a commentary on the utter... nothingness of the Coakley campaign. The Dems tried to replace a real fighter and campaigner with a rather unpleasant drone, and they paid they price. MA already has a decent healthcare programme (signed by... Mitt Romney!), they could afford to sacrifice the rest of the country. One positive the Dems might get out of this, it's the kick up the arse they really needed before the midterms. -- Further to the rumours going around about UIUC a couple of days ago, I've been talking to a couple of people there, apparently they're meeting to discuss the situation, and that may include not fully funding or not admitting anyone. BUT, it's much more likely they'll be fully funding, just a MUCH smaller cohort than previously.
  15. Congrats to the accepted UC Davis applicants!
  16. That's such bad news! And such an anti-climax if it is true.. if there's no cohort at all I'll feel sort-of cheated for paying the application fee + GRE just to apply to that institution when there was never a chance of being accepted. Still, I'll wait for confirmation and hope the committee.. let me in and fund me anyway
  17. Oh, cool! What field are you in? When I was there in Fall 08 I had a class in Intl Security Dr. Frazier, and Joe Miller in Allen..
  18. Comparative. Are you applying there too?
  19. I'm dying to hear from UIUC, I keep having visions of the admissions committee discussing my application, laughing and putting it on the rejection pile - what makes it worse is I went there a couple of years ago for a study abroad thing, so I can put faces to the committee! EDIT: whoa, old thread! didn't notice
  20. I'd love to work in academia.. until recently I've thought of a professional career, but the more I think of it, academia is the way to go. Maybe tenured professor at a school with a good reputation in or near a fairly major city in the US... or if I REALLY follow my dreams.. the Sorbonne!
  21. Applied: 5 (so far..) Accepted: 1 Somewhat optimistic about: 2 Not very optimistic about: 1 Pretty much written off: 1
  22. I have an abysmal GRE Quant score, and there's no set way they'll convert my British-system marks into GPA, and a real sense (since reading this forum) of pessimism and resignation to rejection!
  23. The same! Woo! My positives: Did a Study Abroad trip to the University in the US I'm applying to Really good LORs, including one from a faculty within the dept that I met while I was there Feeling extremely positive about my dissertation My advisor said my SOP was a perfect example Accepted into one course in one of the top Universities in my country So even if I get rejected (which I feel is quite likely), I can apply again next year with a Masters from there!
