  1. It's not like you can't move after you graduate and people relocate for work related reasons all the time. I don't see why it would be an issue to go to UT and then move to New York after you graduate.
  2. Still no news from the waitlists that I'm on. D:
  3. I'm going to buy myself a new wardrobe.
  4. Thanks, dude.
  5. Anyone have news from Indiana's waitlist?
  6. Thanks guys.
  7. Rejected from NYU.
  8. Congrats to everyone. It's nice to hear some positive news.
  9. I don't think it'll help if you communicate this to the school. If they waitlisted you then it means you're not a top candidate so you don't really have any power. All you can do is wait it out. Just thank them and tell them that you're still interested, if you haven't told them already.
  10. Awesome!
  11. I think those are people that won special fellowships either by applying for them directly or being nominated for them by someone on the admissions committee. In one program I applied to there was the chance to win a special fellowship within the department and there was no extra application needed. You were just chosen by the committee as they were handing out acceptances. At another school you were given the option to apply to extra fellowships. Everyone within the graduate school regardless of what department they were from had a chance to get the fellowship and they were chosen by a special committee. It depends on the university and department if you'll get something extra. In your case, I don't think it will make a difference if you wait or not if you've already been given your financial aid package. You could try negotiating your package, but if there's no extra funds then there's nothing that can be done.
  12. In my undergrad my adviser wasn't unfriendly, but he didn't make an effort to make a connection with any students. He didn't even know my name since we barely saw each other. I swear, if my name wasn't on the forms he got every time he saw me, he'd be like ?????. But really, my MA adviser was the one that crushed me. I'm kind of intense because I tend to make a lot of gestures with my hands and I get excited easily. Having him tell me to "calm down" like that really, really humiliated me and I never again spoke to him about my interests. My thesis director became more of my adviser than that guy.
  13. I don't know anyone in the thread that applied there. Who else are you waiting on? And congrats on the admit! Where did you get in, if you don't mind me asking?
  14. I can relate. I can't tell if my current adviser hates me or if he's just a jerk and hates everyone. He's kind of socially awkward and gives off a vibe that you're taking up his time. He sends emails out when it's time to register for classes saying that unless it's an emergency, don't bother going to his office hours and just register for what you want. He's in charge of all of the students in my program so he's busy, but still man. I also can't forgive him because I was once passionate telling him about what I wanted to study and he looked at me blankly and told me to "calm down." So yeah, personality is very important. It can be impossible to work with someone who rubs you the wrong way. My thesis director and I got on so great because he was so nice and gave so much feedback so I got a lot done and was motivated. When I had to visit my program adviser, I wanted to jump into a freezing lake just to have hypothermia as an excuse not to see him.
  15. Second snow day this week!
  16. With funding? O:
  17. I'm wondering this too. I have two schools that I'm on the waitlist for and they will probably notify me late.
  18. No. D:
  19. Let's be honest, being part of a mariachi band pays better than grad school.
  20. This is the worst kind of rejection. D: We should write poetry and songs about this. Forget romance. This is where the pain is.
  21. Is UT Austin having some weird funding issues? It seems we've gotten a few admits this season without financial aid...
  22. My neighbors suddenly started putting all their things into a giant moving truck at 10 PM today. It's freezing outside and it's the last day of February. It looks like they're fleeing into the night. Also, I'm very nosy.
  23. I'm at the waitlist for Pittsburgh but they did not notify me. If you see people posting rejections and acceptances and it's been a while since then, I would go ahead and email someone about it because you might very well be on a waitlist. I emailed the DGS at Pittsburgh and he told me that I was on the waitlist when I asked about the status of my application.
  24. Has anyone posted acceptances to the departments you've applied to?
  25. I used to watch the Big Bang Theory off and on but now I just can't. It's kind of awful. There was an episode where Sheldon sexually harasses his assistant and we're supposed to not take it seriously because Sheldon is "quirky" or whatever. He then says the same awful things to the woman in charge of HR and all he has to do is take a sexual harassment course, which he forces that same assistant to do for him because he can't be bothered. There's another episode where Leonard is going out to the movies with Penny as friends and he decides that he doesn't have to care about her movie opinions or pay for her because he's no longer dating her. He then admits to faking being interested in the things she likes when they were going out so that she'd sleep with him, but not that she's not putting out he can just be a jerk. Overall, though, the show does a good job of showing the uglier parts of nerd culture.
