  1. I've had jobs where I had to deal with students' parents and I can see where they get the attitude. One time I was an office assistant at one of the residence offices in a dorm. I'd get calls from parents telling me things like, "X thing is broken in my child's room. What are you doing to fix this?" These kids would sick their parents on me despite the fact that they literally lived in the same building I worked in and could have just walked down a flight of stairs to tell me their problem. And their parents would call to make the most obnoxious complaints. The curtains were too dusty. The furniture wasn't nice enough, could we replace it? Their child wasn't getting along with X person from across the hall, could we do something about that person? I also worked in the library and I'd get extremely nosy parents that wanted to know things like what books their child checked out, when was the last time they checked out a book, did they have fines, etc. Or they'd give me a list of books and ask me to find them and hold the books until their child got there. That wasn't happening. Also, students at my university only had active accounts if they were registered. So sometimes parents tried to be sneaky to figure out if their child had registered yet by asking me about their library account.
  2. If you're not actually going to make a move or do anything about your attraction then it shouldn't matter if the person is attractive or not. TAs are there to teach you and assist the professor so their physical appearance is not relevant to their job. Also, TAs notice when people come to them more than the other TA and it makes people insecure. In the case of women, it makes them worried that people are not taking them seriously and that the person just came by to stare at their "cuteness" as you said.
  3. http://chronicle.com/article/NRC-Rankings-Overview-French/124732/ Here is a good place to start looking at top programs.
  4. Once the pain has stopped, everyone make sure to post on the results page.
  5. I don't know how accurate the numbers are since it doesn't seem that they differentiate between masters and phd admissions, but it's something to look at as a guide.
  6. I just got waitlisted at a school I thought I had a reasonable chance of getting into. Now my worrying has gotten worse and I can't sleep.
  7. Someone in the results page posted getting an interview with NYU for "Hispanic Studies," but I have no idea if that's in the same department I'm in, haha. I haven't heard back from them but honestly I didn't have hope of getting in.
  8. It looks like Tulane and Princeton doesn't report an acceptance rate. I had the same problem with UT Austin. =/ But here are their pages: http://www.petersons.com/graduate-schools/tulane-university-school-of-liberal-arts-department-of-spanish-and-portuguese-000_10036750.aspx http://www.petersons.com/graduate-schools/princeton-university-graduate-school-department-of-spanish-and-portuguese-languages-and-cultures-000_10045354.aspx But here are the others you applied to: http://www.petersons.com/graduate-schools/vanderbilt-university-graduate-school-department-of-spanish-and-portuguese-000_10044248.aspx http://www.petersons.com/graduate-schools/cornell-university-graduate-school-field-of-romance-studies-000_10035703.aspx
  9. Were you the one that posted about getting a rejection from Pitt back in January? In the results page, I mean. I have gotten radio silence from them. I don't know about Princeton, sorry. Each school handles interviews differently. Some schools only interview people they know they're going to accept and some people interview people and then reject or wait list them later. It's hard to tell how seriously they take GRE scores. Pitt doesn't require them. I'd say as long as they're not awful it's probably fine. I saw a website that lists admissions per department. You could look at that: http://www.petersons.com/graduate-schools/new-york-university-graduate-school-of-arts-and-science-department-of-spanish-and-portuguese-languages-and-literatures-000_10039077.aspx http://www.petersons.com/graduate-schools/university-of-pittsburgh-school-of-arts-and-sciences-department-of-hispanic-languages-and-literatures-000_10031551.aspx For you, I think maybe your research interests are what killed you at Pitt. Pittsburgh is known to be heavily Latin American based. If I remember correctly, the school is one of the best for Latin American studies. Everyone is required to study Latin America in their program and then pick something else as a minor.
  10. I'm from Los Angeles so I'm trying to get out of the West Coast, haha. I think I just applied to East coast schools. Just literature and language, though.
  11. The director seems to personally be emailing everyone, at least my email came from his Indiana account, so he probably just has to get through everyone. I don't think everyone gets a message all at once.
  12. Oh man, we're on total opposite ends here. I'm 20th and 21st century Spanish American Literature, immigration in the USA, Border Studies, and US Latino Lit. I totally couldn't get invested in the Peninsular stuff even though I took a few courses on it.
  13. Congrats! What is your field of study?

  15. Yeah, I noticed that we seem to have a weird season this year. Last year UT Austin was pretty early since they have a December 31st deadline but I haven't heard a peep from them. Someone posted a rejection from Pitt in January even though that's super early compared to last year. And Washington University in St. Louis should have said something by now since someone got an acceptance from them. It looks like in all previous years they send acceptances one day and rejections the next day and they do it in January so it's weird WashU hasn't said anything to me yet. I'm going to eat this entire bag of cookies now.
  16. I just got an email about an hour ago.
  17. I just got wait listed at Indiana. Honestly this makes me more nervous since the other schools I applied to are harder to get into. I wasn't expecting much since I wasn't a Spanish major so I suppose this might be the best I could hope for.
  18. If the school requires the score then you need to have the score. It's a part of the application and they won't give you special treatment and just waive admission requirements. It looks really bad if you don't follow the admission instructions.
  19. On the results page, only the people in the linguistics track mentioned an interview for UT Austin. But since we have so few notices on the results page it's hard to tell if maybe that's just a coincidence. Eeeeeeh...
  20. I want to know who got rejected from the University of Pittsburgh because I'm getting radio silence from them.
  21. I don't know if WashU interviews everyone, but I'm pretty sure I'm getting rejected since I never got one. =/
  22. Jaja, nada todavía. ? Estás haciendo Comparative Lit? Creo que WashU manda todo a la misma vez entonces voy a saber algo pronto... Eres internacional?
  23. Tuviste entrevista?
  24. Have you heard anything more from UT Austin? Just judging from the results board, I think they might only interview the linguistics people, but I can't be sure.
