  1. It looks like the results page is finally getting some action for our department.
  2. I've gotten mixed responses from friends and such. When they applied (not in the same field) they didn't write anyone down. I didn't put down anyone specifically, but I do have some people in mind. I made sure that I had at least two people in the department that I felt comfortable working with.
  3. That blizzard in the northeast is probably going to delay everything too.
  4. Did you guys put down specific professors that you wanted to work with in your statement of purpose? I think that's more common in the sciences or social sciences, but I was just wondering if any of you guys were that specific.
  5. Same. I thought I would have my degree conferred in December 2014 but it'll probably be May 2015. As long as you finish the degree and send in a final transcript, I doubt they'll care when it gets done. Provided it's done before the Fall semester, of course.
  6. I applied to six schools. I'm not limited to location so they're all over the place. I've seen people apply to at least double that. I had the money saved up so I could have applied to more, but I couldn't find any more than six schools that I felt were a fit for me. I had at least four more on my list before they got cut. I decided to only pick schools that I was sure I would attend.
  7. I would look at the results page to see if people posted about interviews. Not all departments interview and even then, each school has their own policy for interviews. For instance, I'm applying to one school that interviews everyone that makes it to the short list. In another school, they only interview international students. Then there is another school that I'm applying to that only seems to interview students who are interested in a certain specialization within the department. So not getting an interview is not an indication that you've been rejected. Added to that, some schools send out invites in "waves" meaning that they do not notify everyone at once.
  8. That's amazing. Good luck with your studies!
  9. I'm in the process of getting a new job, so that's been keeping me busy. I worked at a school with primary children before but I couldn't take it anymore. It wasn't particularly hard, but I just think I'm not suited for children. I knew the school didn't have an MA, but I noticed before that in the results page people put "MA." Maybe they decided to do a MA/PhD combo? Also, the school is just UT. It's what all the locals call it.
  10. I saw a bit of Merlin. My sister is such a geek for British shows. I've seen Sherlock and it was okay, but I liked Elementary more. Did you apply to the MA or PhD program?
  11. My sister is so excited about my potential move to a new city that she handed me a 325 page IKEA catalog.
  14. Anyone got any movie recs? It dawned on me that my vocabulary is bigger in English because there are some topics that just never come up when I talk to someone in Spanish since generally I'm only speaking to my parents in Spanish when I'm out of class. So anyone got some movie recs? Besides Pan's Labyrinth since I've seen it so many times because it's awesome.
  15. Ah, it looks like UT is sending out notices about interviews. Someone posted on the results page that they got an interview. I wonder if they always interview because I've seen some really early acceptances from then on the results page.
  16. Oh! Then congratulations to everyone.
  17. I think they only want the final transcript to confirm that you graduated. Unless the program requires you to have a specific GPA to quality, I doubt it'll be an issue.
  18. Good luck on the trip. Be sure to take lots of pictures. I always have fun taking pictures of things.
  19. Aaaah. I see. Too bad. You could have gotten a trip out of it! If it's Princeton they would have definitely shelled money out for travel fees.
  20. When was the deadline for that application? Are you going to get an interview in person?
  21. I saw some people posted about Princeton in the results page. I guess the results are starting to come in for December applications.
  22. When were your applications due? If they were due this month then it's way too early. I think the acceptances we've seen so far are from people who turned in their applications early December.
  23. I saw that post. It sounded super racist and I was disturbed. I'm not surprised though. There's always people like that. I had a course where we were reading works by an author who was reacting against the colonization of his country. I had a classmate say, "I don't think this author is grateful enough to his colonizers." His reasoning was that the author had a better life under British rule because he got to go to a British school and get a European education. This guy also argued that the Europeans cilivzed the people that they conquered so the conquered people weren't getting a bad deal out of it. It was such an an ignorant thing to say. He topped it off by basically saying that these people were whiners for blaming the British for their current political problems. I believe we were reading a Nigerian author but the name eludes me.
  24. You could send an email to the coordinator for the program or the admin for the department and let them know your professor's official email and they can leave a note in your application.
  25. One of the schools in my department told me that they don't interview. Another school told me that they only interview international students. So I guess interviews depend on the school. Some do phone interviews and some ask you to come visit in person, in which case the school has to pay the student for their travel expenses. All this can take a lot of time so I guess some schools don't want to do it.
