  1. It's not a good event unless there's free food.
  2. Nice!
  3. Oh! Someone posted about BU...
  4. Do international students typically get less financial aid?
  5. I think you should contact the department about it. This probably depends on whether those people are taking on more students.
  6. Keep in mind that some programs take five people or less per season. Getting on the wait list still means you're a competitive applicant. If you get funding and it's a school you're interested in, why wouldn't you take it? You may not get your top choice adviser even if you're accepted right off the bat. Not to mention, this might depend on everyone else's research interests. If there's no overlap then you won't be competing with them for an adviser.
  7. Someone else posted about getting into that school in the thread, I think. But I don't think they decided where to go yet.
  8. If you can't see yourself at this school then don't go. A good fit is more important than rank. Also, you're going to be there for a few years. Going to a school where you won't be happy will keep you from finishing. On top of that, going to a school that isn't good for your interests might make it hard to do research.
  9. I haven't heard anyone say that around here but probably it's related to funding. I assume people that get off the wait list are the worst off when it comes to funding, although this probably varies per school.
  10. That's such a great school. You're going to love it.
  11. I'm starting to think that I didn't clarify my research interests enough, but some of them had like a page limit for my statement of purpose and I also had to justify entering a program when I didn't major in that field as an undergrad or in my MA. I've also been rejected twice, waitlisted twice, and have two more schools that I have a feeling are going to reject me since they've sent notices a long time ago. I might end up waiting until April at this rate.
  12. I'm second guessing what I put down in my statement of purpose. D:
  13. I can't believe that March is upon us. D:
  14. I was born in the USA but I've been to Mexico, Guatemala, and El Salvador. I've also lived in three major cities in the USA: Boston, Dallas, and Los Angeles.
  15. Still waiting on the waitlist at Indiana and Pittsburgh. D:
  16. I'm on my phone so I can just change the language on my phone's keyboard and the Spanish keyboard shows up. I have an Android phone so I can't say if it works on other systems. You can change the language on your computer's keyboard as well, although I don't know if it works for Macs in case you have one. http://support.microsoft.com/kb/258824 This is what I did to my PC to get the Spanish keyboard. A little icon shows up in the taskbar that lets you switch between keyboards. Also, you can add stickers to your keyboard so you can remember which key does which when you're not using the English keyboard. You can also add languages to your browser so that it checks for spelling in other languages besides english.
  17. I'm waiting on NYU too, but they interview everyone they're going to admit so I'm likely going to be rejected. Have you only had negative results so far? My GRE isn't great either...
  18. Who are you still waiting on?
  19. NYU tiene una reputación muy buena. Pero las dos escuelas están en una ciudad muy cara. Donde más te han ofrecido un puesto?
  20. Ah, I see. Do you have offers somewhere else too? I can't remember if you said.
  21. I don't know why they accept people without funding. That's crap. That's essentially a rejection because nobody has the funds to pay for a PhD on their own unless they're rich. Plus, you can't work full time and go to school full time so how are you supposed to pay? Did they specifically tell you that you're not getting any funding? Maybe you could work as an RA or something?
  22. I think it's still too early because they're probably still waiting for people to accept or decline their offers. Some people like to wait until all their schools notify them before making a decision. You should ask them something else to nudge them. Like, "Oh, should I submit any extra materials?" or "Is there financial aid available for people that get off the waitlist?" That way they know you're interested. You could ask them if their waitlist is ranked too. Some schools don't rank their waitlist.
  23. If you're on the waitlist and get accepted, how much time do they give you in order to decide whether you're going to accept the offer or not?
  24. You might hear earlier depending on when everyone replies to their offers.
  25. When does the university expect you to respond?
