  1. I think most people work over the summer or they go somewhere else and sublet their apartment. Many universities have spots for TAs during summer courses. I think most people apply for something like that or try to get summer funding from their department.
  2. Does your ex have access to ILL? They could ask for PDF copies of the articles that way.
  3. My application to the University of Pittsburgh finally says it's complete...and that's it. Still no new message from them after the four messages I sent through their messaging system and the two emails. When they reject me, I'm going to throw my laptop out the window because I was ignored for about three weeks and got nothing for my troubles. D: Also, someone just posted an acceptance to Pittsburgh. Welp, time to go throw that laptop.
  4. I tried to apply to more schools but I didn't feel that they fit me and the six schools I applied to were the ones I felt fit me best.
  5. Nope, but there's still some time left in the day. When I got that mail from Indiana it was already past 5 PM over there so I guess sometimes they send stuff outside of business hours. And some people from other departments got notices on the weekend. I've still just heard from Indiana. =/ Did you get waitlisted at your top choice?
  6. It seems the northeast is having weather issues. Some schools in the Boston area will be closed on Monday. =/
  7. Just so you guys know, Boston University and other schools in the area like Harvard are closed on Monday due to snow. Dunno about schools in nearby states. Also, congratulations to the person who got into the University of Miami.
  8. I meant in general, which one do you want to go to the most of all the ones you applied? I think my top choices are a tie between Pittsburgh and Washington University in St. Louis, but only Indiana has replied to me. =/
  9. Awh, thanks for the support, but I think it depends on my position on the waitlist too. =/ I don't know if it's ranked. The director avoided answering my question on that. What's your top choice?
  10. Nice! I'm still crossing my fingers on the waitlist. I think when schools send out interviews they don't send them all at once. At least on the results page I've seen them spread out over a course of a few days, most likely because they have to schedule a time to interview the student.
  11. I think some people in this thread are applying there so maybe they know something. Did you hear from Indiana?
  12. Same. My parents are encouraging of me going into higher education, but very discouraging when it comes to me living on my own and are pushing for me to pick a school that's close by. My mom thinks I can't fend for myself despite going to a university out of state for my undergrad.
  13. Build a house on the land my grandmother got from her father, call it a study abroad, and apply again next year.
  14. I'm jealous of the people that get notifications on weekends. =/
  15. My post was solely in reference to what the other poster was saying. Also, saying more girls flirt with male TAs does not somehow eliminate the discrimination that female TAs experience. And people in this thread have already given anecdotes and data on how the experience is worse when you're a woman. Women not being taking seriously in their field is a real issue.
  16. Don't get me started on that. I'd see college kids on the metro with huge bags of laundry because they'd go home for the weekend and have their mom do a month's worth of laundry. Also, the first few times I went to my dorm's laundry room, I saw a lot of confused faces. A dude once asked me why I was separating my clothes into colors. They had to put up signs on how much detergent to use because someone used so much that it broke the machine and we had suds all over the floor. Someone I knew from my hall asked me why he saw me washing my sheets so often. I was lazy so I only did it once every two weeks. This person had washed their sheets once a semester. It was disgusting.
  17. So there are results posts for every school I applied to and I have only heard back from one.
  18. I had a supervisor that told me that she knew a 35 year old man whose mother would come by his workplace often to make sure his coworkers were treating him right. And before, when he had job interviews and didn't get a call back, she'd call the work place to scold them for not hiring her son.
  19. I go to a small, Catholic university and there are girls like this. I wouldn't say they make up the majority of the female population, but they do exist. They tend to drop out once they get engaged too. I think it'd be smart to stay and have a back-up in case something happens and they need to work, but I guess that's not a priority for them... I went to a Catholic, conservative school for grad school and very liberal school for undergrad and the attitude toward marriage is different too. At my Catholic school, even for girls who aren't there to meet a dude, marriage is a huge priority to the point where it seems that being married in itself is more important than the person they're married to. They take not being engaged as a personal failure and see getting married as a duty that they need to fulfill.
  20. I've seem acceptances and rejections sent out for schools I applied to but only one replied so far and it was quite unexpected since I didn't think I'd hear back from them for quite some time. One of the schools has gone totally silent. My email has been unanswered for over a week. I even used their weird messaging system and send three messages over a period of time only to get zero replies.
  21. Move-in day is when you really see the ugly side of these kids' parents. I had a hall mate whose mother took off every curtain in the room and decided to wash them in the laundry room for her child. They weren't even dirty but she insisted on basically sterilizing the room. There was this guy I'd see around campus a few times and he was always with his dad. I never questioned it but when it got to be the third week and his dad was still there, I did ask. Turns out his dad decided to spend the first three or so weeks of the semester near the university to make sure his child had settled in. The kid came from out of state. There are kids who are babied all through college so it's easy to see why they get a certain kind of attitude. And honestly, some of the things they say to professors is embarrassing. Like, you're the adult now, please stop acting like this.
  22. If I get accepted, I'm going to wait until literally he last moment before telling them, like maybe three weeks before I leave or something. My family will try to involve themselves too much otherwise.
  23. I guess I'll find out something later today, if I find out anything today. I'm not sure if they send everyone notices at once. We will see. Did anyone see the Georgetown post? It was over 9,000!
  24. Someone got an acceptance at Boston University. I haven't gotten any news yet...
  25. Do not take out the loan. California is horribly expensive too, so you have to think about your living expenses. It's not worth thirty grand.
