Are you guys applying to the same schools?
-
The IP address is not an issue. I mean, it's not weird to share an IP address with a professor since you guys are both at the same location frequently, right? Also, most professors use more than one email. I had a professor that used to reply to emails with both her personal and school email. I think she used to have her school emails forwarded to her personal email because she checked that one more often. besides, they can just google her name and it'll come up on the school website so it's not like you faked a person. I think you've overthinking this.

Josep, have you already submitted your applications for the season?
-
My friend just told me that she once met Isabel Allende and got her to sign a copy of The House of Spirits for her. I'm so jealous.

Well, I don't ever post anything with my real name online because my parents gave me a super uncommon name. You google me and I'm the first thing on the page. I'm like the only person with this name on Facebook. Well, it's not an uncommon name but an uncommon spelling that my parents made up.

Congratulations to everyone. I think the rest of us should be hearing something in a week or two. Late January and early February seems like a busy time for admissions.
-
Oh man, that would have made me super nervous. Also, I tend not to answer the phone when I don't recognize the number so I probably would have missed the call unless I knew that it was coming.

I applied to a school like three years ago and they gave me the same student ID number that they gave me last time and when I uploaded my application materials, they still had my old materials on file. It got really confusing because it wouldn't let me upload some things since it thought I had already done it because those old materials were on file.

Does our department get much less applications than other departments? http://www.petersons.com/graduate-schools/indiana-university-bloomington-college-of-arts-and-sciences-department-of-spanish-and-portuguese-000_10030531.aspx http://www.petersons.com/graduate-schools/university-of-pittsburgh-school-of-arts-and-sciences-department-of-hispanic-languages-and-literatures-000_10031551.aspx http://www.petersons.com/graduate-schools/washington-university-in-st-louis-graduate-school-of-arts-and-sciences-department-of-romance-languages-and-literatures-000_10034548.aspx I was looking at this website, which lists some admission rates, and compares to some other Humanities departments, it just seemed like we get a lot less applicants. But I was surprised that some schools got less than 100. Maybe I overestimated how popular the major was.

What program, Joan? And so they're just going to interview everyone without giving them notice? O:
-
Very well said LKS! I agree with you. I've been kind of looking around the forum and it just seems like the people in the English department are really negative about the whole thing.
-
For which school did you have an interview? Are you applying for a Comparative Literature program or in the Spanish department?
-
I saw these guys talking about the prestige of the school you go to and how it affects your job prospects. Any opinions on how this relates to our field?
-
I was going to apply to Cornell and Columbia but eventually decided against it. The Ivies are really theory based, right? I didn't like that in the coursework. My top choices are NYU and Pittsburgh. Pittsburgh seems to have a reputation for having a top notch program for Latin America. I emailed the admin to ask about it and she didn't reply and instead I got an email saying that my file was complete so it was probably because I asked that I got the message. I'm getting nervous that my transcripts got lost in the mail or something since I haven't yet gotten any verification that my file is complete for my other applications.
-
Have you not taken any lit courses? Haha, that's really all I've taken...
-
I should have gotten some kind of certification. I took graduate level Spanish literature courses so I thought that was sufficient but who knows. Did anyoneelse get an email from Indiana confirming that your application is complete?
-
Not interviews. D: I really dislike them.
-
The earliest I saw someone get notice was for UT Austin on January 20th. It looks like I'll be waiting some weeks before I'll hear back from my schools.
-
Me too. I want to hear back fast so that I can make living arrangements. But I also don't want to get my rejection letters so soon. I have a fragile maiden heart that can't take academic rejection.
-
My thesis advisor went there and he recommended that I apply. Bloomington looks nice. Maybe having a pretty recent grad recommend me will help.
-
Indiana University at Bloomington seems popular on here. I've seen that a lot of people on the board are applying there.
-
Where are you applying to, Natiyrm?
-
Seconded. I'm waiting until I hear back from the schools to send thank yous so I can give them a follow-up, but a nice card would be appreciated, I think.

How do you know if your program interviews applicants?
BeatrizBear replied to snyegurachka's topic in Waiting it Out
Well, some programs do phone interviews or Skype interviews instead.
