  1. I'm transitioning from another department so I feel I'm not as competitive as other people. I have basically only seven classes in the Spanish department and was awarded 8 credits for getting a 5 on the AP exam, but that doesn't really count since it doesn't come with a grade. I was initially in the Classics department and I thought I was going to keep going with that so I got an MA in Humanities and initially focused on Classics but then took some Spanish classes. I do have coursework in Ancient Greek, Latin, and German, though. I've skimmed Portuguese newspapers before and I can make out some stuff, but the speaking part is way too hard for me. If you speak to me I'll understand less than if I read it.
  2. I would definitely be excited to go there. Indiana seems to have more language programs than any other university. I'd like to learn some Portuguese. And from the placement, it seems that people do okay job market wise. I hope I can see you there!
  3. Some people around here would appreciate it if other people declined or accepted their Indiana offers, am I right?
  4. Wow! That's great!
  5. The email just said that they had "a large number of strong applicants." I think schools always say that, though. I wonder if they have separate lists for MA and PhD candidates. I mean, they must have a number of PhD and MA candidates in mind already. Well, hopefully people that don't want to go reject soon because this anxiety is killing me. I definitely would like to go to Indiana.
  6. Rejected from WashU.
  7. I wonder what my chances are to get off the wait list at Indiana. It looks like a good program so I'd like to go, although I had never heard of Bloomington until I applied to Indiana University. I'm not sure how I'd like living there. A high school buddy moved there so I'd be relieved to just know someone. The director was kind of avoiding answering me where I rank on the waitlist. =/ Is there any new news from Washington University or Pittsburgh? They seem like they send rejections and acceptances at the same time, so I'm worried about not having heard anything from them since people have posted rejections and acceptances from Pittsburgh and an acceptance from Washington U.
  8. I got my first rejection. Now I'm sad.
  9. The depends on your position on the waitlist. If it's ranked then you'd pretty much have to be the first one on the list to have a chance. And there's no real percentage we can give you for chances since this all depends on how many people accept their offers.
  10. UT just sent me an email telling me to check my admissions status. It was an automated email. Way to rub salt into my wounds.
  11. Most people studying Latino, Latin American, or Spanish literature post in the Language part of the forum. I specialize in US Latino Literature, 20th and 21st Century Latin American literature (both with a focus on women writers), Border Studies, and immigration in the United States. If you're looking at Latin American Literature in general, look at Pittsburgh too.
  12. Thanks for your support! You know, I lived by USC for eight years. Let me tell you that UCLA is in the nice part of Los Angeles so you're lucky. Downside is that it's such an expensive city. And the public transportation is a joke. But you're near some nice beaches.
  13. Still waiting on other schools?
  14. That's amazing! So happy for you.
  15. I have been rejected to UT Austin and waitlisted at Indiana. I didn't interview with either school nor did they say anything to me about it. The only contact I initiated myself and mostly it was just questions about the application process and the program. I didn't specifically talk to any professors or anything either.
  16. Let's hug. D:
  17. I was hoping to get into Washington University but it feels like a far off dream. D: I'm just not good enough.
  18. I found out today. They probably haven't updated everyone's account yet. This is making me lose my confidence since the other schools I applied to I feel are harder to get into. If I don't get into Indiana then I'm going to probably need to re-apply next year. D:
  19. I got rejected from UT. =/ I didn't get an email, but I checked on the website.
  20. Same. My mother in particular keeps hinting that I should pick a particular school because it's three hours away. Nevermind that I haven't gotten one acceptance yet. She's also certain that I'll get in everywhere and doesn't understand why I'm worried.
  21. I quoted something that someone said earlier in the thread because I thought it might be helpful to you. Not all programs have interviews and sometimes they only interview certain people, like only international students or perhaps only students studying a certain track (some departments have both literature and linguistics tracks). I wouldn't worry so much about the language thing. Really, what languages you'll need for your degree will depend on your research interests anyway so while knowing other languages is good, you might not even end up using it. I doubt you'll be quizzed that hard on your Catalan, if at all. And typically you'll either have to test out of a language or take courses on it and you can choose which one.
  22. Maybe it was a mistake? Did the letter say that they rejected you from the PhD and admitted you for the MA?
  23. Just ask. If the department has the funds for it, then they will help you either by giving you a stipend or paying all the costs. Not all departments can afford to pay their students' travel costs. It's not that they don't want to, but it's just that they can't.
  24. Today I cleaned my room to take my mind off things and now I'm organizing my desk.
  25. It looks like Boston University and Harvard will be closed today again. Man, that storm must be bad.
