Fall 2016 Cognitive Neuroscience (Psychology Departments)
FeelTheBern replied to Gvh's topic in Psychology Forum
I was thinking about it, but tbh, I think I need to take a break from school for a bit. Last year we were trying to figure out how to coordinate the schools that we wanted to apply to and "meet halfway". Ultimately, I decided that I wasn't quite sure on exactly what I wanted to do in grad school, while my SO has been set on this for years. With admissions for PhD programs being as cutthroat as they are, I knew that the chances of us getting in at the same school, much less in the same state, would probably be next to impossible. So, needless to say, for now, I'll just be following him and searching for a full-time job wherever he (hopefully) gets accepted. Lucky for me, I have always liked the idea of living in a city with great public transportation and use of alternate modes of transportation (I hate cars, but I love walking/biking), so the fact that his two interviews are in NYC and Boston has got me ecstatic! It's taking all of me to not start looking at apartments.... (My SO might meet you without knowing at NYU btw! They still haven't confirmed which date they want him to come because he told them he is available for both.) What is your SO's discipline? He is applying at the PhD level? @Gvh Woohoo! Congrats!! -

I 100% agree! About half of the programs that SO applied to have been relatively silent. However, one of the six has started sending out interview weekend invitations, but none have gone out (or so it seems) for the cognitive area. Gotta just keep the hope alive at this point I guess! Nothing yet! My SO was in contact with his POI in September and she requested that he send his application directly to her after it was submitted, and he did, but we haven't heard anything since! If it helps, in past years, it looks like applications haven't undergone official review until early February, and some applicants are contacted for Skype/phone interviews beginning in February. From what I can tell, there are no in-person interviews for the program! Decisions also look like they go out in early to mid-February. Good luck, I will let you know if I hear anything!! -

Congrats @Gvh!! I still have no idea what these pre-interview chats mean...do they mean that your POI is really interested in you or does it mean that they are unsure whether they want to invite you to the in-person interview? ...SO confusing!! If you can read some articles authored by your POI between today and tomorrow and also prep some questions, I think that would be the best preparation. Also, I am not sure if this is appropriate for a pre-interview chat, but I know that when my SO talked to his POI on the phone about the in-person interview, the POI really stressed having project ideas. This may be more appropriate for in-person interviews, however. -

Does anyone want to claim the Tufts interview invite that was posted in the Results? Can you clarify which area of psychology you applied to and also if the interview invite was for an in-person interview or a phone/Skype interview? Gracias -

Wow, I think I got tired just reading that! How you are handling all of those interviews is beyond me! Best of luck with all of your interviews, I am sure you will receive good news very soon As I read thru past acceptance threads here and on SDN I have noticed a trend of people were extended 2+ interview invites and received at least one acceptance out of those interviews! I am hoping this trend continues this cycle as it is the only thing that it is keeping me sane! haha -

Btw @St0chastic, I saw on another thread that you have received interview invites from 7 of the 8 schools you applied to! Congratulations, that's really awesome! -

Hey @St0chastic! My SO received his first official rejection today, but it was a soft rejection (if that's a thing), so no hard feelings...yet. No on-site interviews have happened yet, but there are two impending ones! SO is preparing as much as he possibly can for both, since we are not really sure how many more he might get! We have a really good feeling about one of the schools, but we are thinking that getting one more interview may clinch at least one acceptance (hopefully)! How's it going for you? Any on-site interviews yet?? And if so, how was it?! -
Has anyone ever gotten in without a POI?
FeelTheBern replied to therapeutic turtle's topic in Psychology Forum
I would agree with @simister, sometimes it really does feel like it is just a crap shoot. One POI that my SO got an invite from contacted him completely out of the blue (early on) and invited him to the official interview day, even though there had been no previous contact, besides naming the POI on the application and SOP. Another professor whom my SO contacted in the summer, particularly sought out his application after it had been submitted and contacted him for the official interview shortly thereafter. In the case of that university, I can 100% say that contacting the POI in the summer helped substantially. Additionally, I would like to think that because the professor sought out the application, it is possible that it was not eliminated during any first round review. -
School: University of Connecticut Area: Psychology (Language & Cognition) Rationalization: The professor already has 3 students and doesn't have enough funding for a fourth. Comment: Even though it is the first official rejection, it was a happy one with a really nice email from the POI commending the application. So it's all good Coping tactics: Looking forward to interviews!

Hey, I just realized that some people are just copying and pasting the first list and adding their school to that one, but the idea is to have a cumulative list with all of the schools. So, before you post, scroll up and copy and paste the list that the last person posted, change their school to black and highlight yours in a different color so that people can see what was updated on the list while also being able to review what others have been posting. Below is the most recent list. The next person to post should copy and paste this one, thanks guys! Any cognitive psychology ph.d. applicants?
FeelTheBern replied to psychgal2112's topic in Waiting it Out
Hey @psychgal2112! How's it going? My SO applied to 12 programs 10 Cognitive Psychology and 2 Cognitive Science PhD programs. He isn't really into TGC, but I think it fun to talk to other people who are going thru the process and feel as nervous as I do, even though my SO is the one that applied! How many programs/what schools did you apply to?? -

So, I combined all of the results that have been posted so that people don't have to scroll thru every post to see what schools have sent invites. The other acceptance post is more detailed so people should still use that to post new acceptances. If you would like, you can also add to this list and just make it a different color so that people can see which school was added (if not I can try and update this list once a week or something). Please also try to keep it in alphabetical order! Thanks, I hope this helps! ps.....it was long day at work! From my understanding, it was for all areas...my guess is that official rejections will be sent next week or the week after. It is possible that people could turn down interviews or not be able to attend in which case additional people could get invited, so it's not over til it's over -

Nope, however, I have spoken to a couple of people who were invited to recruitment weekend and they told me that they had correspondence with their POI starting in December and were notified by there POI early on that they would be getting an invite to recruitment weekend. Since my SO never received any initial contact we have been presuming rejection since the end of December. -

Is anyone else kinda disappointed that interviews seem to be super sloooooow this week?? I really had a feeling that this would be THE week for interview invitations to be sent out. Guess I was wrong.... ......maybe next week...... *sigh* -
I think you are fine, especially if you called and confirmed that your documents have been received. Since you confirmed with them, I think it is completely safe to assume that your completed application will be reviewed and will be considered for admission. If, however, you feel uncomfortable that the documents still read "not received" or "incomplete" (as I would), I suggest emailing them again and letting them know that you are particularly worried that your application status has not been updated. In my experience, schools are usually very helpful when it comes to things like this.

Hey @Fork! Congrats on all of your invites and welcome to TGC! Did you apply to the Cognition and Perception program at NYU? My SO also received an invite to the interview weekend in Feb.! Will you be going Feb. 5 or 19? Also, who is the POI you received the invite from, if you don't mind sharing? (you can PM me if you prefer). -

School Name: Northeastern University Interview Invite Received: 1/7/16 Degree: PhDType: CognitionNotified via: Email from POIInterview Date: 2/13Additional Info: Email from POI. Additional details to be sent from the department. There will be an informal dinner with graduate students the night before the interview. All hotel and travel expenses are covered. Please PM for the name of POI. Thanks! Note: POI mentioned that the psych department has finished first round review of all applications, and applicants should hear if they were invited to interview weekend soon! -
Does anyone have rough numbers or any idea about this? I have seen other people on this forum say that approx. 2-5 students for every POI are invited to recruitment/interview day. Does that mean each student's chances are 20%-50%? Please feel free to chime in as I am interested in hearing different views.
