  1. If you were not expecting this question and you did not have any project ideas prepared, I completely understand how this would throw you off a little. However, all of the professors that my SO currently does research with told him that he should be prepared with at least 2 project ideas for every POI that has invited him to an official interview. Additionally, when one of his PIs invited him to the official interview weekend, he explicitly told my SO that he needs to have project/research ideas prepared. Like I said, I completely understand why you may have felt uncomfortable, however, I don't think that you should write this school off simply for that reason/question. I say this because I think that it is a question that is asked by many professors during official interview weekends. Just my two cents...I do hope that the rest of your interview went well!
  2. I understand that there was no official interview weekend at UIUC, and most acceptances have already been extended. This is what I was told by a user on here who was accepted to the program.
  3. On January 7, my SO received an email from his POI inviting him to interview weekend. Although he did not apply to social, his POI told him in the email that the Northeastern Psychology department as a whole had completed the first round of reviewing graduate applications, and this was on January 7. Additionally, the interview weekend for the department is being held on February 12 and I believe I spoke to someone on here who indicated that they had been invited to interview weekend and that they applied to Social. The administrative assistant also wanted interview weekend confirmation by January 15. Hope this helps. If you would like to confirm, Rebecca Schachter is extremely helpful if you want to email her and ask.
  4. I don't know if any of these are necessarily unexpected, however, there were a couple questions that my SO received in a recent Skype interview that did catch him somewhat off guard. These included a question about his Math skills due to a low Quantitative GRE score. How their school is ranked among other schools that he has interviews at, and also a specific question regarding a methodology that the POI uses that he would have only known the answer to if he had read one of her recent publications.
  5. Just started exploring the City Guide thread for Boston...bad idea...apartment hunting sounds scary and confusing!!

So I didn't attend Tufts or Northeastern but from my understanding Northeastern tends to have more funding available for its students; additionally, Northeastern is located relatively close to a downtown area with all the stores (e.g. Copely square) and would be a much more expensive area to live in/around. Tufts on the other hand is actually located in Medford, which is north of Boston and Cambridge and is substantially cheaper. Now, I don't know if its $9k cheaper but it is cheaper. For instance, you could live really far north of the city in commuting distance to Tufts and find very affordable housing I would expect (compared to the rest of the city, anyway). So to answer your question, it's both, ha. But then again, I haven't lived in either of those areas so take my advice with a grain of salt :)

That's a pretty big difference between the two.  My roommate after college went to Northeastern Law and we lived in Somerville.  It was a bit of a schlep but really not that bad.  I don't know what your budget is, but I was just looking at Craigslist the other day and saw a number of nice apartments over Davis Square or Porter Square.  Basically, I think that you could probably find good rents for either place.  Boston is a relatively small city and there are some good bus lines along with the subway that gets you where you need to go.  I think it just depends on how long you're willing to commute, etc.

The communities outside of the city are much more reasonable - i.e. Somerville, Everett, Malden, I live in Watertown, which is a really nice community, and lucked out with an $1100/mo rental. Best advice I can give is scour Craigslist and if you're considering roommates, be very discriminating. I've had some horrifying roommates here.

  7. That's really great @ihatechoosingusernames, so happy for you!!! I can only imagine how you feel! Congrats UConn is a great school!
  8. My SO applied to the cognitive division and has not heard anything yet. This seems like an early invite for the program because it looks like they usually send out invites during the first two weeks of February, but who knows, maybe they are doing it early this year!
  9. @overdetermination@psychgal2112 Thanks for your help guys! I just wanted to let you both know (and anyone else who may have been following the conversation) that it turns out that there is an interview weekend for Tufts! Past results have not indicated an official interview weekend, but maybe there always has been? After an hour and a half Skype call, my SO was invited to the interview weekend, which is going to be Sunday/Monday 2/21-2/22 (heading to Boston two weekends in a row) and possibly back to back with NYU! This is going to be a busy, stressful, crazy month! Thanks again
  10. Hi @AngryRobot!, I am not sure that I completely understand your question, but I work in the International Services office at my university, so I will try to answer your question to the best of my ability. I cannot tell you why the IELTS is preferred to the TOEFL due to the fact that the school I work at allows students to submit either, although from my experience, more students submit their TOEFL score to us rather than the IELTS. Why, I do not know. In regards to an interview justifying English proficiency, although that may be true, unfortunately, a school cannot issue an I-20 for an international student to come to the US unless they have the minimum TOEFL/IELTS score. This is the reason that all schools must receive the score and also require that students receive a particular minimum score. This being said, the system is very flawed because in certain countries it is extremely simple to have someone else take the test for you. Because of this, many students have enrolled at our school with very poor English skills that did not reflect their IELTS/TOEFL score.
  11. I really hope you are right! We have both been afraid to say that, just because that would really suck if we were wrong, but thanks for that! Good luck at your Brown/Northwestern interview next weekend btw! Still unsure whether my SO will be interviewing next weekend or 2/19 for NYU. So far we have heard nothing from the the department (interview schedule, rooming, etc.) so we are thinking either he will be going to the 2/19 interview, or everything is just going to be done very last minute.
  12. Sure will! I see that you added a signature! Have you had your interview yet?

  14. I would say it is pretty uncommon for schools to not hold interviews, but of course, there are always exceptions to the rules, and there are definitely a handful of schools that do not conduct in-person interviews. Surprisingly, there are even some schools that do not conduct any type of interview apparently. (Someone recently received an acceptance from UCSC without any kind of interview on Results Search.) Out of all of the schools that my SO applied to, only 2 of them do not conduct in-person interviews. However, they both conduct Skype/phone interviews before extending an acceptance. I know what you are saying about the wait! It is excruciating! I am hoping that after the in-person interviews, my SO hears fairly quickly thereafter (from looking at the Results page, it looks like after the interview, if the POI wants to accept him, he should hear back no more than two weeks after the interview, which is terrifying because they are coming up so soon!!) Also, he has this weird Skype "interview" coming up that wasn't called an interview, but is for one of the programs that does not conduct in-person interviews. The email basically just said that she wants to talk about the lab and the program, does that mean he won't be getting interviewed or....what does it mean?? So ambiguous! Anyways, since he received the email all we have been doing is overthinking what is going to happen on the Skype call, so I am happy to join the club!
  15. Hey @lovemc just wanted to let you know that my SO just received a request for a Skype interview from his POI. Please PM if you have any questions!
  16. School Name: Tufts University Interview Invite Received: 1/27/16 Degree: PhDType: Psychology & Cognitive ScienceNotified via: Email from POIInterview Date: 1/29/16Additional Info: Email from POI requesting Skype interview this week. Does not sound like an official interview request; unsure whether there are official in-person interviews conducted at the school. Please PM for the name of POI or other details. Thanks!
  17. @overdetermination I am private messaging you!
  18. Thanks for doing that @Analyticchic! Please let me know once you find out (you can PM me as well). It sounds like it will probably go out as a mass email then?
  19. Haha thanks, that's awesome! @AngryRobot! I have no idea, but I like it because you can tell that he means business. Maybe someone was asking him about Hillary's emails?
  20. Thanks @St0chastic, the cognitive person contacted me as well!
  21. I am starting this thread because I have noticed that a lot of people have been asking questions like this lately on different threads. Make sure to specify your area when you post the school's name because that could make a difference. If you have contacted a school and know that all interview invites or acceptances/rejections have been sent out, this is a great place to post it! In the meantime, has anyone heard (cognitive psych area in particular) from: UIUC, UDel, UPenn, or UMass Amherst? I have seen a few things posted in Results Search about some of these schools, but not for the cognitive area. Does anyone know if interview invites/acceptances for the cognitive psych area at any these schools have already been extended?
  22. I posted the answer below in another thread, and although it was answering somewhat of a different question than what you are asking, I think it also applies to this! My advice would be to apply to schools where you believe you would be happy and excel. However, there are other factors that should also be considered like the pros and cons of applying to top tier institutions vs. lower tier ones simply so you have a better shot at acceptance. This is especially important given the current job market. During the application process my SO received the following advice from one of his LOR writers: "So my advice (and the advice that other professors in this department agree with) is to aim high, for top tier schools, where you are most likely to get a job when you complete the PhD. Because if you can't get in there, that will suck, but it will suck less than completing a PhD at a "safety school" and not being able to get a job when you graduate." The article below goes into detail about the importance of this. Interesting article about universities hiring for tenure-track positions (in many fields, not only psychology): http://www.slate.com/articles/life/education/2015/02/university_hiring_if_you_didn_t_get_your_ph_d_at_an_elite_university_good.html

  24. For the events hosted by the graduate students (socials, dinners, mixers, etc.), my SO is wearing a button down with an argyle, v-neck sweater over and dress pants. Based on what people have been posting on here, I am assuming that this may be a bit overdressed, but in this situation I feel like overdressing can't hurt one bit. Better to be overdressed than under-dressed is usually my rule of thumb.
  25. hahaha thank you @psychgal2112! I am actually a Sociology major (will be graduating with a BA in May). The best feeling is waking up every day and using the knowledge I learned to make informed conclusions about why society works the way it does and why people do the things they do. In high school, I would always ask myself, "When am I going to use this?" In Sociology, I am always asking myself, "When am I not going to use this?" Do you already have your Bachelor's or Master's? Or are you currently working?
