The last time I donated, the guy assigned to me had similar troubles. My blood was coming out slowly, so he put the cuff around my arm and twisted the needle inside my vein multiple times. Ow.
-
It ended up being the Red Cross. They want my blood. They want it so much they called six times in two days. :/
-
Haha, he should have. The only thing I have to vent about is a random local number repeatedly calling my non-local cell phone. Legit people leave messages. I return to calls to people who leave messages (usually). Stop calling me without leaving a message. (I didn't apply to any local schools, so it shouldn't be related to applications.)

MPH in the UK and Europe - anti-Americanism
Page228 replied to out.to.sea's topic in Public Health Forum
I still have a few apps to send out, but the list is primarily English universities (most of which are in London or within an hour or two of it) with one possibility in Ireland (Dublin). I've never visited either country, so I'm applying somewhat blind. -
MPH in the UK and Europe - anti-Americanism
Page228 replied to out.to.sea's topic in Public Health Forum
I'm an American who went to school in Canada for undergrad. I don't have a strong regional accent, so only one Canadian ever noticed (and pointed out) "You're American?!" Most of the time it didn't come up unless it was relevant. When it did come up, people would generally express disapproval of the USA's politics, but not of me personally. It probably helped that I don't fit many of the stereotypes. (I'm quiet, on the thin side of average weight, open-minded, atheist, etc.) The Canadians are not a hostile people. While I heard more anti-American rhetoric than I would have liked, it wasn't bad. That said, I'm applying to universities in the UK for next year, and I have had similar concerns. -
Philosophy jokes! http://slatestarcodex.com/2015/01/25/a-philosopher-walks-into-a-coffee-shop/ For anyone else who needs a distraction from marveling at the number of rejections people have received on a Sunday.
-
At least two now. They're about two weeks earlier than last year, but they do seem to have a pattern of sending out rejections before acceptances (which is rare, from what I've seen).
-
A lot of the British universities have rolling admissions with final deadlines in the spring/summer, so it's not surprising that they're first. Congrats to those who received acceptances!
-
I can't comment on the other two, but philosophy does not tend to interview and almost no one has heard back on their applications yet. (Results search for "philosophy" yields very little recent activity.)

One of the baristas from the cafe I frequent actually just left this month to go do that. Now I wonder how she managed it.
-
I still have other applications, so I'm only done with the US. As much as I want to be done with the process, I'm really glad to have my mind occupied by everything I have left to do for at least the next week or so.
-
The speculation about decreased applications this year in at least one of the disciplines mentioned above (I think Lit.) was initiated by a poster commenting on decreased traffic on the forums. (Maybe there are fewer posts because there are fewer applicants.) It's certainly a nice thought.

Third on the free Magoosh flash card app. I downloaded it about 48 hours before the test and wished I had found it sooner.

Writing sample question: Does it have to align with your primary interests?
Page228 replied to kalash's topic in Philosophy
One university I just happened to look at said writing samples "should be on topics which are relevant to the subject of your proposed course of study." I'm sure some universities won't care so much about the choice of topic, but if you have any specific programs in mind you might want to see if they have something to say on the matter. (I have seen others that just said "your best work." So, like everything, it depends on the individual committees.) -
Ha. Yeah, I'll probably upload the same sample again. That's seems to be the only safe option. (Although I don't know how they could object to funny philosophy jokes.) (Oregon)
-
One of the application systems has two different spots to upload writing samples... but as far as I can tell (and I double-checked) they only want one sample. The system won't let me leave the second spot empty. Do I upload the same sample twice? I was so prepared to pay, click submit, and be done. Argh.

FWIW, an acquaintance of mine just recently told me a similar story about OHSU from when she was admitted to their PhD program years ago. She was able to get an extension, but even then they still wanted an answer before April 15.

Was reading on my iPad in the kitchen when a spider dropped from the ceiling right in front of me. Retreated, dropped off iPad in bedroom, went back to kill spider... Couldn't find it.

How the heck do you end an SOP

Given the 500 word limit of one of my statements, I'm tempted to go with, "kthxbye." -
This popped up on Facebook today: No idea what they pay, if anything, for PhD programs, but I thought I'd share.

Oh, I'm not as close to done as I may have made it sound. It's just that my chosen universities in the UK technically don't have deadlines until the summer. I am also trying to get the remaining five of those done during the holidays, since deadlines for funding are generally in January/February.
-
I would probably drop the "current" as it's implied, and they know that interests can change. But that's just me, and I don't know anything about anything. I've certainly faced plenty of similar decisions! I have two applications due January 15, which I hope to submit before the holidays are over.
-
Submitted one of my applications last night. I was not aware of a length requirement for the personal statement prior to filling out the form... until the little box for the personal statement said "4500 character maximum." (I assumed I would be uploading it.) I cut about 300 words and submitted. I noticed a stylistic error in the second paragraph today. It could have at least hidden itself in the middle. Sigh. (Ideally I wouldn't bother looking at things I already submitted, as that can only lead to negative feelings, but I have to cut it down even more to meet a 500 word limit for another application.) Thoroughly annoyed. I need tea.
