They are known for continental philosophy, and yeah, I assume that's why. They're an SPEP program: http://www.spep.org/resources/graduate-programs/

From the results board for Oregon: 10 Feb 2014 - "178 applicants, 6 admitted. I'm 7th on a waitlist of 13." 2 Mar 2015 - "'This year we had 178 highly qualified applicants for a handful of openings.' My ego stings a bit, but those odds make it slightly easier to take." They had exactly 178 applications both years? (Or last year they had 178 total applicants, and this year they had 178 "highly qualified" applicants and some unspecified number of applicants who were not highly qualified, which would still be a weird coincidence.) (In 2013 they said they had 144 total applicants. I was hoping it was 178 and that they just trotted out that weirdly specific number every year. Aw.) I'm still waiting on my rejection email, not that it matters. I accepted another university's offer weeks ago.

Seriously. I can handle being rejected, but must they also send me trash to process?

Questions for MA students/grads about evaluating MA programs
Page228 replied to popsteady's topic in Philosophy
Verificationist, would you mind clarifying the distinction between taught/research MAs and purely taught ("rubbish") MAs? When I looked up KCL and UCL (which you listed under the latter category) they seemed to include dissertations... Here's King's: http://www.kcl.ac.uk/prospectus/graduate/philosophy/structure (And thank you for the insights!) -
I can see where someone might get confused if you're a single person inviting a single person of the opposite sex out for dinner or drinks one-on-one...

University Of Chicago Philosophy, PhD (F15) Rejected via E-mail on 26 Feb 2015 ♦ A 26 Feb 2015 2a/1w/6r/12. Recommended for MAPH = Hahaha.

A university sent me an email reminding me about their open house... A week after rejecting me. Now they're like the ex who won't go away. I want a clean break.

Things you'd hear at an AdComm meeting as a fly on the wall

"Are we done yet?" "...George, you've looked at two applications." "Ugh. Where should we call for lunch?" -
I didn't apply there either, but that would be a pretty cool requirement. Edit: Posted before seeing the reply above mine. Oops. That's awesome, though.

It went okay. I should have spent a bit more time on studying quant (I scored a 158). I had a month to study and spent less than half of my studying time on math. I memorized formulas, but didn't do nearly enough practice problems. (And probably didn't memorize enough formulas.) I've forgotten the quadratic equation again. I always forget the quadratic equation.

What happens if I send my score before the applications are open?
Page228 replied to nikhil_m's topic in Applications
Depending on how many schools you're considering, you could email a bunch and see if you can find four who won't mind getting scores so early. Otherwise, I agree with avflinsch. You might as well just send them and hope for the best. -
Non-stop blizzards are probably making it difficult for them to get things done. Life is rough in the northeast this year.

Same.

Ah, I couldn't see your location on my phone. Sorry! Boston definitely has better public transit than Providence, but Providence is far easier to drive. If you will have a car, make sure your new place has off-street parking. Providence, I believe, has added resident parking permits now (for a fee, naturally), but generally, there's no overnight street parking.

I grew up near Brown and can field some questions about the East Side, although I haven't lived there in a couple years now. Commuting between Boston and Providence five days a week by car would be a traffic headache. I knew people who did it by train, and that seemed okay. (I don't have personal experience in that though.) Given that you have a decent budget, the East Side is a great place to live. Wayland Sq. or Wickenden street both have shops, cafes, and restaurants. (I like L'artisan cafe in Wayland Square.) Thayer street in the heart of Brown territory has shopping and restaurants as well, but is also far more packed with teenagers. These are all pretty close together, and living near any would give you easy access to the others. Overall, the only reason I wouldn't go to school in Providence is that I grew up there and want to see other places. It's a very cool little city with plenty to do and a good amount of culture, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a good spot to spend a few years.

I liked "What a suck!" and "FATALITY"

I spy a bunch of Davis acceptances and one CMU acceptance. Congrats everyone!

Thanks, and to you as well! This MA is taught; it's one year of courses. The PhD is all research. I look forward to a nice efficient path toward doing my own thing.

Humor is the closest thing I have to a religion. Reaction: There are other fish in the sea Taylor Swift - Shake It Off Applicable lyrics: I keep cruising Can't stop, won't stop moving It's like I got this music In my mind, saying it's gonna be alright Cause the players gonna play, play, play And the haters gonna hate, hate, hate Baby I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake Shake it off Heartbreakers gonna break, break, break And the fakers gonna fake, fake, fake Baby I'm just gonna shake, shake, shake Shake it off, Shake it off (And on people posting acceptances to schools that rejected you...) My ex man brought his new girlfriend She's like oh my god But I'm just gonna shake And to the fella over there with the hella good hair Won't you come on over baby we could shake, shake Reaction: So, so, so sad The Beatles - Anna (Go to him) Applicable lyrics: Anna Girl, before you go now I want you to know, now That I still love you so But if he loves you more Go with him All of my life I've been searching for a girl To love me like I love you Oh, now, but every girl I've ever had Breaks my heart and leaves my sad What am I, what am I supposed to do Reaction: Defiant Eminem ft. Lil Wayne - No Love Applicable lyrics: Throw dirt on me and grow a wildflower (...They'll yell at me if I post other lyrics from that song.) Reaction: Saw that coming (rejected by the reach!) Taylor Swift - I Knew You Were Trouble Applicable lyrics: I knew you were trouble when you walked in So shame on me now Flew me to places I'd never been 'Til you put me down, oh I knew you were trouble when you walked in So shame on me now Flew me to places I'd never been Now I'm lying on the cold hard ground Oh, oh, trouble, trouble, trouble He was long gone when he met me And I realize the joke is on me, yeah! Reaction: Moving on Sharon Jones and the Dap-Kings - Better Things Applicable lyrics: I'm a better woman than I have been 'Cause I don't think about way back when It takes two to love but only one to leave It was you who did that dirty deed I got better things to do Better things to do Better things to do Than remember you Reaction: Always looking on the bright side of life (sense of humor) Monty Python - Always Look On the Bright Side of Life (Not a melodramatic breakup song. It's what you should listen to instead of melodramatic breakup songs.) If life seems jolly rotten There's something you've forgotten And that's to laugh and smile and dance and sing. When you're feeling in the dumps Don't be silly chumps Just purse your lips and whistle - that's the thing. Bonus reaction for being wait-listed and then admitted: Roy Orbison - Pretty Woman Applicable lyrics: Pretty woman, don't walk on by Pretty woman, don't make me cry Pretty woman, don't walk away, hey...okay If that's the way it must be, okay I guess I'll go on home, it's late There'll be tomorrow night, but wait What do I see Is she walking back to me Yeah, she's walking back to me Oh, oh, Pretty woman

Good thread idea! I live in Oregon currently, but I've lived in a bunch of places in the US and Canada. My BA is Canadian, but not super recent. I was accepted into a philosophy MA program in England, so it looks very likely that I'll be heading that way for 1-4 years (pending PhD program admission). I still have to get the unconditional offer (official transcript is on its way), renew my passport, get the loan, and apply for the visa. (Yes - I'm going against the advice of the majority and taking out the loan. Some people take out mortgages. What I want is an education in the UK.) (I like my education like I like my alcohol... Non-domestic.)

I got that email too, and I didn't apply there. But earlier today I was momentarily startled by an email. "The U of... [my undergrad institution] Alumni Association." Stop it, undergrad institution.

While we wait, it's interesting to see what other disciplines are doing with the results board: "brewdata: Extracting Usable Data from the Grad Cafe Results Search" (Math/Stats) Using the data (linked in the above thread) http://minimallysufficient.github.io/2015/02/08/gradcafe.html I wish I was better with that kind of stuff. I have dreams of teaching myself more math/stats someday.

I've heard of girls going to certain (...Catholic) universities "to get their MRS" but I've never heard anyone say that they personally were there for that. Wow.

I love this. Congrats to all on the acceptances!
