  2. If you're going for something like analytical chem (this is what my MS is in): Q: 162 - 170 V: 160 - 170 AW: 4.5 - 6 chemGRE: 75-99th percentile These are just estimates of where you should be aiming. Of course the closer you are to the max, the better. Remember, the adcomm takes into account GPA, SOP, GRE, and LORs into account so don't stress too much over the GRE (start studying early, take a few practice exams and you should be fine). Good luck with your applications
  3. I agree, try not to use more than 2 exclamation points
  4. brown bear
  5. Apple "new" products (iWatch, etc). Don't get me wrong they make excellent machines, etc. (I have a macbook) but stop with the micro-updates and calling it "new".
  6. Yea I would imagine few programs would send paper acceptances when most of the acceptance/rejection processes are electronic these days. That being said, I did like the few programs that sent me hard copies.
  7. Honestly, internship experience could be leveraged for an MS program.
  8. Hello there - I'm a person of color and all I can really say is that those of color tend to be in the minority at the graduate level regardless of the field of study. I wouldn't say it's a discriminatory component of the SLP field - it's very prevalent in the STEM fields as well. The reasons for the low participation of those of color at the graduate/professional level are quite complex and I wouldn't conclude it as strictly discriminatory.
  9. I would also try to take the ACS Subfield exams (analytical, organic, physical, biochem, etc) to give you a better idea of what the subject test would be like
  10. So who's heading to Durham this fall?
  11. It's not too bad - my MS requires I keep a 3.5 or above to keep my stipend.
  12. sport version
  13. The verdict is in - I'm going to Duke!
  14. professional development/networking opportunities? average time to completion for the PhD?
  15. child soldier
  16. I'm not too sure how useful calc would be in sociology programs (maybe calc I-II) , but I would absolutely say take some stats classes (basics, experimental design, probability, etc).
  17. forward thinking
  18. I would also charge no more than $15 for the application fee. This is enough money to hit the wallet of a broke college student (especially if applying to 5 - 10 schools) but not enough to devastate them since a lot of the applications will end in rejections.
  19. The grad students on my visits tended to be honest but they still tried to spin the program positively (which I understand). At one of the programs, the student, who was on his way out (5th year), gave me some of the best advice on how to succeed in grad school and straight up told me that "program X is awesome but at the end of the day it's up to you to choose the program you best fit with. If this is the program, then awesome but if it's not I can't force you to come but I can give you some tips that should work regardless of which program you choose." IMO that was one of the most useful conversations I had with any current grad student on out of all my visits and I plan on doing the same once I'm in my PhD program.
  20. Not take a 2 months to reject applicants
  21. I wouldn't imagine so. I submitted 4 LORs (as opposed to 3) for some of my schools and didn't have any real issues. Now if you'd submitted like 10 LORs that may be issue, but 1 extra shouldn't harm your application package.
  22. Since the rankings are both top 10, it won't really have an effect on your job prospects. I say go where you see yourself enjoying the research and environment (that may be the one with a better research fit).
  23. slow pitch
  24. I agree with MathCat. You won't be locked in a lab for 24//7 for 5-6 years, so you better enjoy the location (city, weather, etc.) or at least be able to tolerate it. I used this reasoning and didn't apply to any MA or NY schools - since I knew I would be much happier in other locations (plus other factors).
