Need help on deciding between two PhD programs
eeee1923 replied to sleepyhead's topic in Decisions, Decisions
I am in a similar situation to you. What I am planning on doing is making a decision matrix where I assign a certain weighted value (0 < x < 1) to the various components that I feel contribute the most to my decision (research fit, location, stipend, etc). This will be a tough decision, but I also come from an engineering background and I tend to be more comfortable with quantitative data. Good luck with your decision. -

Mostly doing my daily email check. However, when I got into one of my top choices - a seminar I attended just ended and when I checked my phone I yelled out and the one of the profs (who I didn't know too well) gave me a high five.

Finally finished with interview season. All I have to do now is wait for the decision from Case Western and then make the final choice.

"Nominated" means that the program has accepted you and they're waiting for the bureaucratic clearance with the graduate school, usually you should get "in" with no problem unless the grad school somehow felt you didn't meet the minimum admission requirements. So congrats - you can breathe a little easier.

Is It OK to apply to more than one program in the same school?
eeee1923 replied to docjourney's topic in Applications
If you can afford it, there's no problem with doing that. -
I was quite surprised by this as well since I'm coming from a Master's degree. I thought I'd be a bit on the older side but I'm glad to see that most of the applicants I interviewed with took some time off to do master's degrees or work as techs.

I remember using chegg a bit a few years ago for my introductory university physics course. When you're stuck, it can be helpful but at that point it was free - I wouldn't pay money to finish a homework set since they usually don't hold that much weight in the final grade.

What Has Been Your Biggest Challenge In Applying To Grad School?
eeee1923 replied to DrKT's question in Questions and Answers
Couple of things: 1. One of my LOR writers had a family emergency come up close to the deadline and wasn't able to finish my letters until the day the app was due 2. I was coming from such a different background than traditional applicants to most of the PhD programs, that I wasn't sure if my stats (which were all very good) would be helpful enough 3. The amount of money that I "invested" in this process - at most programs they are rejecting most of the applicants so why not just charge less money for the app? Some schools did and I appreciated that since my wallet was very devastated after the whole process. -

Thinking I should retake the test - not sure how to improve...
eeee1923 replied to pd010's topic in GRE/GMAT/etc
If you take it once or twice a week (something I happened to do) in the weeks leading up to the exam it may help you get the process down pat. A higher verbal score would be helpful but focus on getting the Quant up to ~ 165 or more. I totally get the anxiety thing but if the other parts of your application are strong, I wouldn't sweat it too much. Overall: take the quant section multiple times (you may not have to take whole exams) from the different sources you had mentioned. Since you're kind of pressed for time this may be your best bet. -

You might want to use the ETS PowerPrep II software under real test conditions (it's a free piece of software). This would help improve any of the anxiety that you may be having about taking the test.
