With all the good advice that's been given, I can't really offer you any logical and unbiased words. But if you're leaning towards Duke, I say do it (also Duke tends to be really welcoming towards international students). P.S: I'm going to Duke so hopefully you pick Duke

I currently have a GA at my MS program and I basically work as a TA teaching some lectures, running labs, grading HW, lab reports, etc (15-20 hrs/wk). Overall a GA's specific duties are usually department, or grad school dependent - basically you would perform some service for the department and you are paid just like a job. My biggest challenge is just how much time fulfilling all my duties takes - it's enough to be annoying (i.e. I can't always get as much research time as I'd like or getting hw done early) but not so much that it impedes my academic performance (I've kept a 4.0 in the program).

Emory vs UC Irvine for Pharmacology
eeee1923 replied to NeuropharmesanCheese's topic in Decisions, Decisions
Before suggesting anything I would wait until Emory has made you an offer. If need be you could ask UCI for an extension on making your decision since the Apr. 15 deadline is approaching. From what you've said it looks like you would enjoy UCI more (and you could always apply to Emory for a postdoc if you do choose UCI), but I wouldn't freak out until you have both offers on the table. Relax, you have one offer waiting for you . -

This tread seems to be in the wrong sub-forum -
I just got a macbook pro (so take my words with a grain of salt) but you should look at the RAM capabilities of the two macbooks - if you tend to run RAM intensive programs I would go with the Pro, if not go with the Air.

I'd just like to chime in that doing a PhD in a top 25 program that's well funded would help you enjoy your time a bit better since you won't have to worry about loans and such. Then you could do a postdoc at a higher ranked program to help you get your foot in the door with an academic position. The less worried you are about the living expenses the more time you would have to focus on your research and produce good publications - which would help you get that postdoc and then academic job.

Practice Scores: #1: 158Q 160V #2: 160Q 162V #3: 164Q 165V Real Thing: 165Q 167V 4.5W I tended to always score a bit higher on my verbal section than quantitative (which was weird since I'm coming from an engineering background) but I figured as long as I got within the 90 percentile range it literally didn't make any difference

One place you can start at is by typing "stem cell" into pubmed and reading some recent articles about research being conducted in that area and check out which schools the authors writing those articles are from.

International Postdoc-ing
eeee1923 replied to lrlrlrlrlr's topic in IHOG: International House of Grads
My goals include completing a postdoc in Europe (either in the UK or Germany) since a lot of the companies I want to work for have their HQ's in these countries. Not my only reason but I feel that having some more international scientific exposure will positively impact my career (I did some of my early schooling in the Middle East & Europe) -
I would say no more than 10 - if you're applying to that many programs find another prof. These are busy people who are trying to help you out - no need to burden them more than necessary

I figured I'd also chime in on my background for future applicants following @ballwera's example since I found this thread a bit late in the application season. I learned quite a lot from this tread and hope for future applicants to do the same. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Undergrad Institution: Top 5 Private Engineering School Major(s): Chemical Engineering, Chemistry Minor(s): Statistics, Biology GPA in Major: 3.82/4.00 Overall GPA: 3.68/4.00 Position in Class: No Idea, somewhere in the top 50 most likely Type of Student: Immigrant (domestic applicant though), Underrepresented, Male Master's Institution: Top 5 Private Engineering School (same school) Major(s): Analytical Chemistry Minor(s): N/A GPA in Major: 4.00/4.00 Overall GPA: 4.00/4.00 Position in Class: Top 3 GRE Scores (revised/old version): Q: 165/170 V: 167/170 W: 4.5/6.0 Research Experience: 4.5 years total working on various projects spanning from electrochemistry, process/control engineering, and inorganic biochemistry. Yes retake - your verbal and writing will stop you from getting into a lot of masters and definitely PhD programs

I would consider applying to masters programs first since a lot of top 20 ChE programs tend to look at the numbers a lot (just the nature of the game). But I agree with ilovelab. Good luck.
