I'm living in Durham (on the Durham/Chapel Hill) boarder but going to UNC. I just visited last week to find housing, and I saw some nice apartments in Durham in not so bad areas. I would recommend looking in the Southpoint Mall area!

Hahaha! Well, if that is what April 15th if making you freak out over, then post away!

Why can't you drive? I drove 11 hours for an interview I requested. I think they are doing you a favor to let you come an interview after you were rejected, so I wouldn't rock the boat. If you don't have a car, I'd rent one; if you don't have a lisence, I'd find someone to drive me. If you have to work, I'd beg and plead to take off.

Moving to the appropriate forum (ie City Guide). http://thegradcafe.com/forum/viewtopic.php?p=4948#4948

There is a pretty big MPA thread going on in Government Affairs. I'm going to close this thread, but please feel free to go check out the other one! http://forum.thegradcafe.com/viewforum.php?f=15

I had an email from "abuse@thegradcafe.com" in my bulk mail folder containing a link. Obviously as the owner of the domain, I know there is no "abuse@thegradcafe.com." Be cautious of clicking links in your emails. The only mailings I have set up are barista and then one with my name. There are no accounts, abuse, etc.

A quote from "guest" in another thread. (And I will say, it would be tough to go to a college campus and not find women concerned with their appearance.)

Where are you from originally? I feel like this is one of those cases where something rubbed your cousin the wrong way, and ever since then she has only had a negative view of UGA. There are racist and sexist people everywhere from all backgrounds. A guy I started dating a while back had the most loving mother ever who was very good to him, and he was one of the most sexist people I've ever met (which is why I am no longer with this person). I think sexism among southern-type frat guys is more a matter of immaturity and misunderstanding than an actual superiority complex towards women. Many of them will grow out of it, and if not, then they can just stay closed minded. I just won't have anything to do with them. This isn't 1965 as much as America might like to think the south is racist, we're generally coming out of that. You get a few bad seeds, but you get those everywhere for anything. People get talked about and made fun of through stupid jokes because of gender, weight, height, interests, car, family, race, kids, etc. etc. etc. If we all avoided places where we stood a chance of having someone say something negative to a friend, then we would all have to sit at home on our butts. You wouldn't be able to watch tv or listen to music, only stare at the wall. There really becomes a point where you just have to get over it and move on. I'm not saying people should be held unaccountable for being racist or hateful in any way, but the only way to stand up to it is just make yourself better. If it's true a bunch of sexist racists go to UGA, then wouldn't a black female getting a masters degree from the same school these people are getting a degree enable her to have the last laugh? Either she's just as good as them, or they're just as "bad" as her. That being said, the people I know from highschool who went to UGA are far from racists. They are kind people who would help anyone on a dime.

CONGRATULATIONS!! Sorry this is late, but I just now saw it. I'm so happy for you!

Yeah, it is full tuition! And pace, if you go to UNC, do you have anyone to live with? I've started looking for options so I can fly out one more time and meet potential roommates/visit apartments before moving. I wish I could stomach paying for a one bedroom, but I'd rather have a roommate in a nice apartment than living alone in a run down place to save on rent.

I got a nice offer from UNC today -> tuition + stipend. I think that pretty much does it for me. I wanted to go there, so money is the icing on the cake/deal breaker. UGA said in their email that if you haven't received notice of aid by the end of March to just forget it, so I will give them another two weeks. I can't say I am holding my breath though.

Well, barista is italian, but it is also a term used for people who make expresso drinks at coffee shops here as well. I'm applying for public administration.
-
I'm not italian (ancestors are dutch and scottish), but I love the language. When I was getting a new screen name a year ago, I was trying to think of something a little creative since everything else was taken. I looked up "southern" in italian, and thus here I am...meridionale. I don't know if it is southern in terms of direction or location though. Are you an Italian-American or actually from Italy?

Hey everyone. I wanted to let you know I made two specific changes to user profiles on the forum. 1. Only registered users can view profiles and search the forum. 2. There are two new fields: Program and Schools. You can enter the field you are going into and the schools you are waiting to hear back from (or have been accepted to). Treat it however you want. Hopefully this can connect a few people, and since you can PM on the forum, you don't have to expose your email address! Thanks y'all, Andrea

Is anyone going there? I'm 99% sure that is where I'll be, but I am still waiting for the financial offer.
-
I got into UT-Austin. I've been accepted to every school I applied to! Wow. I think it might be margarita make up night from the GRE last November. I did terrible on the GRE, and I just couldn't celebrate. I figured everyone would reject me now even though I studied so hard for that test. Hooray for schools that don't put everything on your GRE score (well besides money, which I won't be seeing much of that). Paaaartay!

http://forum.thegradcafe.com/viewtopic.php?p=1893#1893 This isn't really the type of way to start a new thread in this forum. Thread titles should be related to one city/campus, but I quoted your question in the UIUC thread. Refer to the link above.

Y'all isn't that redneck. I say "y'all" instead of "you guys," but I don't sound like that! Haahaha. But then again, I'm not from Kentucky. I'm from the deep south. There isn't anything as hard to understand though as a backwoods cajun accent.

Well, I doubt UGA will give me money. Locura got tuition+stipend today, but she inquired when she got acceptance and was told she had been nominated. I emailed, and they told me that they will notify us all soon. I think UNC will offer me something (or I hope), so I don't know. I guess that is my phrase of the day - I don't know.
-
Well, I'm not 100% sure, but I was thinking UNC. However, I just got an email from IU offering me financial help, so back to being confused again.

Ah, this could get ugly. I see you are from England, so I must warn you that Lexington, KY is not NYC or LA. So, if people come in here trying to put a negative tone on it, you have to factor in what sort of city they enjoy living in. If it's NYC, they'd hate Lexington. I know some people who go to UKy (I was accepted there as well), so I will link them here to give you a good point of view. One good thing about large universities that basicly have a town built around them is that they are cattered to college students and have a very big "community" aspect to it.

I found one entry that was interesting. It's a house with two older male grad students, and I'd get my own bedroom and bathroom. I have an older brother, so I am comfortable living with guys so long as they aren't creepy. But it's in a good family-type neighborhood, so there will be no noisey drunk people at all hours of the morning. He wanted about $100 more than I wanted to spend, but he said he's willing to negotiate if it meant getting a good roommate.

Has anyone used this service before? I signed up for it and have found one good match, but I was a little creeped out when I had a guy send me a message saying he has a room and commenting on how I looked. Gah, makes me feel gross just thinking about it. How are you going to go about finding a roommate if you are looking for one?
