  1. I never heard of a good phd program including tuition in their stipend offer. That's crazy. In my current program we get 19k-20k for 9 months with a tuition waver and health insurance.
  2. My old mentor there told me how arbitrary the process is. She had a student that she selected as "definitely admit" and they were still rejected.
  3. I went to CU Boulder as an undergrad, and I know for a fact (after talking to a mentor), that the department has picked its admits. Probably will get notified today or tomorrow.
  4. From my experience, and from others I know in other programs, the range is usually about 19k-30k. The UC system, though it is mostly elite, has bad funding (around 22k) whereas Michigan and Yale are doing around 29k-33k.
  5. Michigan admits: what time were your acceptances sent out?
  6. Congrats! When did you get the email?
  7. I was given an offer at UCLA and I have a 149 q and 155 v. Do with that information what you will..
  8. the orgtheory rankings are good. It's not based on any objective measures but rather on faculty opinions. They asked sociologists from departments around the world "what department is better x or y" and based it off of that. https://orgtheory.wordpress.com/2013/03/25/sociology-department-rankings-for-2013/
  9. I'd need you to be more specific about what your interests are. Social movements, activism, and higher education are so broad and general. But off the top of my head, UCSD is a great place for social movements, political sociology, and higher education (they have Amy Binder).
  10. It's true and not true. It also depends on the program. Professors have connections, and can reach out. However, this in itself will not get anyone accepted. All that this does is get an application looked at seriously. On the other hand, some programs operate through the buddy system a little more than others.
  11. UCLA admit here, they might send out more acceptances next week. But I also know that they are already planning the visit. It's a black box.
  12. What's wrong with being direct? I would email them directly and tell them your paper has been accepted for publication and that you hope they use that information in consideration of your application.
  13. You should definitely let them know. I'd email the graduate coordinator and the grad chair. Just say you wanted to inform them of a CV update/that you have been published in a relevant journal.
  14. I noticed that you are applying to CU Boulder. I did my undergraduate there. You should PM me if you want some details on the program. Things you should know.
  15. Might be a tough one. The most programs usually offer is $500 for travel. Not really enough.
  16. Makes sense, early in the season it's always acceptances because usually it is the departments notifying students rather than anything official from the universities. Just wait, the rejection bombs are coming soon.
  17. I only applied to three.. I'm going to visit the other next week. We'll see what happens!
  18. Waiting is the worst. You'll be okay. I was rejected from UCLA last year and got in this year with the same crummy GRE score but with a much better SOP.
  19. I was surprised as well. It was weird because the graduate coordinator sent me an email saying I qualified for a special fellowship, and so I responded asking "am I admitted"? Then moments later I got the offer.
  20. I got into UCLA. Just found out a few minutes ago. I'm already in a program but decided to switch out. Don't let anyone tell you GRE scores are everything.
  21. Isn't this thread for acceptances, rejections, and interviews? 99% of what's posted in this thread is conversation.
  22. I think one of the departments was sociology. The author makes mention of a sociologist she interviewed. It could, however, be a sociologist in a non-sociology department.
  23. New book just published reviewed by Inside Higher Ed. One of the first ethnographic accounts of PhD admissions: https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2016/01/06/new-book-reveals-how-elite-phd-admissions-committees-review-candidates?utm_content=bufferf6b3b&utm_medium=social&utm_source=facebook&utm_campaign=IHEbuffer#.Vo3lr-Zy90o.facebook I found it to be fascinating and disturbing.
