  1. thought it was the end of business day in respective time zone of university.
  2. Also, Jeff Haydu at UC San Diego is a food movements scholar.
  3. Wow. Sounds like a very disorganized department. I wonder if by sending a letter of full funding, etc, and signing it, etc, if there is a contractual obligation on the school's part to honor the agreement? At any event, I would say that the glitches and ambivalent messages suggest that the department is not a place your friend wants to do their grad work.
  4. Yale would be the place for this. Seriously check them out.
  5. Not any program worth going to.
  6. declined Yale for UCLA. Hope it helps someone who might be on the waitlist. Yale's fantastic, and one would be lucky to go there.
  7. UCLA is the center of stuff like this, I think.
  8. I mean that I became intimately familiar with American sociology and in the theoretical and empirical debates in my subfield over the last five years. This way, I situated my research project in such a way that I was a collaborator with the professors and not simple someone "who can learn a lot from you."
  9. Your GRE score is plenty high. Don't waste anymore time on it. I got into really good programs with a very low GRE score: 149 (q) 155 (v).
  10. Yale accepted ten students. That's what I know.
  11. I'm thinking that those who haven't heard anything either way are probably on a wait list. UCLA competes with the other top tens, so it is likely that some people will decline and other offers will be sent out.
  12. tell them you still want to go to the visit
  13. I don't really know. I kind of knew that I was in almost right after my visit, and then my POI notified me last week that I had been accepted. The next day I received an email asking if I had accepted an offer elsewhere. Someone else got one of those, as well. If you didn't get that email, it might mean you weren't accepted. But who knows?
  14. "official" Yale decision come on Friday.
  15. Does anyone have any idea as to what we should be expecting as far as funding goes? Figures from last year, etc? Thanks
  16. I want to add something about contacting professors. It worked for me but I emailed them very specific and targeted emails. It was not "I want to be your student." What I did was read a good amount of their work and then emailed them explaining how my research project would address questions and problems they posed. Also in my SOP I didn't talk about my background whatsoever or anything personal. It was basically a research proposal.
  17. kind of a similar situation with Yale. They just get too many apps.
  18. I don't think this is a hard and fast rule. It worked for me; I contacted professors at UCLA and got in, and with Yale.. I also only applied to three programs (and I'm currently a PhD student in another well regarded department). Don't kick yourself too hard. Try again.
  19. I don't know really. I started a dialogue with a group of professors there back in November and they invited me for an in-person visit. I was there on the 28th and 29th of January.
  20. I think they will be notifying tomorrow. All that I know is that the decisions have been made.
  21. I think only a selection. I had to do a lot more than send in an app to get in.
