  1. If anyone has questions about CU Boulder let me know. I'm currently a student there.
  2. You know, I wrote my thesis on Foucault's encounter with the Iranian Revolution. It is a very interdisciplinary piece drawing much more on stuff from the humanities than anything properly sociological. Still, sociology programs have been very interested in my piece. You can study Foucault if you want to, but you need to find something novel.
  3. I have no idea. You can check the results search and construct your own explanation: you are a sociologist!
  4. I really don't know. There is a lot of theorizing on this forum about this issue, but I am of the opinion that the evidence points in a lot of different directions, so, we just don't know! (still, it's better than rejection).
  5. Columbia and NYU have sent out acceptances. Columbia has also sent out rejections, but no rejections yet from NYU. You can look at the results search option on thegradcafe and see what schools have posted information.
  6. Love Karl and Friedrich.. Have you looked at Kevin Anderson at UCSB? He wrote this *amazing* book called Marx at the Margins. It's about Marx's writings for the New York Tribune; Anderson constructs Marx and Marxism as a world-historical social philosopher/philosophy and not merely one concerned with Western modernity. You should check it out.
  7. I received a formal acceptance from the Dean, but I haven't received a financial offer just yet.
  8. You could do Critical Geography... I'm only now learning about it but I here it is pretty powerful stuff. Karl would be your main man!
  9. Yeah, it's interesting, Berkeley and NYU are toward the bottom. From what I understand these rankings are based on faculty opinion (I think).
  10. Have you looked at the Gourmen report rankings? My professors at CU have told me it is the only ranking that anybody really listens to. From the Gourmen report, it looks like UT Austin is ranked higher than Princeton. http://www.socialpsychology.org/gsociol.htm(note that this website is for social psychologists but the ranking is for Sociology PhD programs). I don't know what your subfield is, but from what I am learning, you wouldn't want to go to say, Wisconsin to do comparative-historical work, even though they are a top 5 program. These kind of things are all a bit klunky and subjective... The pedigree of Princeton can go a long way, but I'd go to the program that is the best fit!
  11. I think this is a going to be a big week. What schools are left?
  12. Does anybody know when UCSD is likely to send out funding info?
  13. I agree, letstalkshop, the crapshoot factor mixed with how competitive this is makes for a difficult situation. I really think playing the numbers is smart. Of course, it is important to apply to the right programs and to have awesome Statments, etc...
  14. There is a good amount of arbitrariness to the whole process of admission. I think the best way to short-circuit this (to whatever extent possible) is to have your professors make phone calls and write personal emails to people at the programs you're interested in. I know that this was a crucial aspect for my acceptances. Also, I believe it is important to have numbers on your side. Applying to only five programs is risky (because of the arbitrariness) and perhaps, if you don't get in this year, you might think about applying to 10-13 programs next time.
  15. UCSD folks, are you going to the visit?
  16. I was emailed a little before noon Mountain time. I know that they admitted one person last Friday (at midnight, actually), and the rest of us today.
  17. Accepted to UCSD!! What a day!
  18. Absolutely! Anybody have insight into what this wait list process looks like?
  19. Waitlisted for Michigan... is this good?
  20. Really happy for, and jealous of, all of you. Nothing but rejections on my end. Still have six more programs to go.
  21. Talked to San Diego also, they are shooting for next week as well. Did my part!
  22. Called Michigan and talked to grad coordinator. She told me they are just waiting on funding information and will have decisions early next week... So, looks like more waiting.
