  1. Just when I thought I was shut out... I met a prof at conference who is looking for students, we chatted about my thesis and a proposed study, she mentioned we'd probably have a lot in common and gave me her card and welcomed my app for either this or next cycle! Wow! Now to reevaluate my plan again...

Thank you guys! I can't believe it! They also chaired my favorite symposium that I attended with my mentor! I can apply for now if I wish! It's an R1 but not very high ranked in psychology... and the craziest part? I wasn't presenting just attending!

  2. Spring Break Day 1 = Writing a thesis and planning out what sessions to attend at my first SRCD, if only I had an offer it'd be better!

  3. I had to google it as I hadn't either! It takes retrieving your U of T student number from SGS and a pin (info on the first page) of ROSI. Also I applied to the same program as you but I'm international (American) so I'd be interested to see if you see an update (I didn't as far as I could tell)! Who is your POI? (Welcome to PM that if you want)
  4. Texas does have a common app for it's public universities (I'm an undergrad at one) and it saves a lot of time when applying as you'd only have to submit all the basic background info once instead of n (number of schools) times! I kept thinking while I was applying that it'd be great to have one for grad schools! If I ever have that kind of power that's something I'd like to implement!
  5. Thanks for the suggestion! Hasn't been updated as far as I can tell! More waiting for me...
  6. Interesting to hear you think that! Before I even applied I contacted my POI thanking them for their help with something for my thesis (my undergrad advisor emailed them and asked for something and I wanted to thank them for sending it) and I actually received a reply... Yes, really! Why not? I'd like to know if I'm actually shut out or not!
  7. Thank you for this info and I definetely meant to upvote you not downvote sorry!
  8. So I've probably been rejected from everywhere this application season. This is my first time applying and I applied straight out of undergrad. I plan to try again at least once more as I don't want to give up on my PhD just yet! Upon revealing the devastating news to my undergrad advisor, they suggested that I take a lab manager position and that I'd benefit from the opportunity especially since they considered many current/former lab managers this time. I am graduating from a state school, an R1, and ranked top 15 in psych with my BS in May. I am a psychology major with SPSS experience and some Python programming experience who will have been in my Developmental lab for 2.5 years when I graduate. I also will have completed two theses (a lit review and an experimental one) by then. I am already on the CogDev listserv which sends out listings for these jobs in my area. My questions to the cafe (especially fellow psych geeks) are as follows: Have you been in one of these positions? Did it/or do you think it helped your chances of getting into a PhD program? How close was the lab you worked in to your actual research interests? About how many positions did you apply for? What are interviews for these like (if they are done)? What is your advice for someone applying to these positions?
  9. To demonstrate shadowclaw's point, I still have a week and a day of classes before my Spring Break at my undergrad insitutuion. My undergrad department is trying to have all decisions out before then, so I'd think it's highly possible to hear on your Spring Break if it doesn't line up with the school you are hoping to hear from! And to add to interesting other things to consider with admissions descions, my Spring Break is also the week of a big biannual confrence in my field so I don't think committees would meet during something like that! To be accepted at that meeting or on break would be great but I don't think it'll be happening for me this year.
  10. Ah ok! I definitely understand that point now! So true as everywhere (across states and different fields) seems to have funding problems right now. It all seems to go down to one point: funding right now is really hurting, everywhere.
  11. It is AWFUL. I had a good cry for most of the day that it happened on. I told a friend (a current grad student in my area) and my undergrad advisor (couldn't escape this one as she helped write the email I sent to check my status) and they were both very supportive, giving me advice and how to improve my application and what to do in the year I now have nothing to do in and telling me to not give up. To have gotten so close and to be rejected because of that is so difficult but I'm trying to use the fact that I did get that close as motivation to try again. I'm an undergrad so I'll be looking for a lab manager job and trying to publish one (if not both) of my undergrad theses before next application season. That's not too good either... It does help a little to think of it like that. Mine was one where they seek to fund everyone so I'm expecting flat out rejection, not an unfunded offer.
  12. Agreed that it does but it still hurts. Some people at my undergrad (R1 and top 15) are mentioning that it's becoming much more common to have been a lab manager before being accepted, which is probably partly due to this as well. Yes it did. And I think it shut me out. I found out at interview that I was probably the student my POI would take if there was funding as I was the only one there for them. Found out from my thank you email that there was probably no funding. At least I'm supposed to receive reimbursement but still. It's nice to feel wanted though (currently using as some of my motivation to try again) but missing class (undergrad) was no fun.
  13. 99% sure I've been shut out... due to a lack of funding post interview (so far implied) rejection. Ouch. :( I love my field and I don't want to give up on my PhD but ouch. I will be be back next year!

  14. Adding some more general to this thread: I did send a personalized one to my POI at my one interview. I received an email in response the same day answering my question about the next steps in the process too (unfortunately it didn't have too good news about my POI getting funding). My current PI (for undergrad), who I've been working with for two years now, said they really appreciate them and that to them, it definetely looks good to send them. My advice for the situation above (take with a grain of salt though): I'd send one detailed one to your first choice and possibly thank the interviewer for their time and possibly mentioning trying to collaborate with your second choice if the school seemed open to encouraging that.
  15. The post-interview wait is so much worse... so anxious to know if it's acceptance or (probable) shutout... so anxious I just want to jump out of my skin!

me too! It is the worst! I think it's harder to be rejected post-interview. On the paper app you can chalk it up to not getting a good read.

^^^^ so true!! I legitimately felt like I had been dumped by the love of my life when I got waitlisted after an interview. I didn't sleep the first night, cried the second, and my heart stopped beating when I got a generic email from the school. Keep wondering what I did wrong. Stay strong! No news is good news.

Thank you everyone! I'm happy to have not been rejected yet! Just had to rant to people that understand. It's so scary if it also probably determines if I get shutout this round!

  18. I worked on an undergrad student committee that brought George Takei to my campus (large state school). I met him and his husband Brad, awesome people!
