yaaa no.... people in this thread are saying that "they know they should pick their dream school" but insist on being neurotic and beating the question to death by asking everyone and anyone their opinion. even when all of those opinions align with "pick the dream school" these people STILL don't decline offers. you people are gross, selfish and awful.

not expecting anyone to consider my opinion... just saying that there's a lot of selfabsorption in the room. how quickly we forget what it's like to be on the torturous waiting end! these are the kinds of attitudes that carry forward into academia and shows how profs can completely guiltlessly put applicants thru hell during app season.

apply your very powerful brain for a day or two, consult everyone you need to consult, and make a decision. because of this dawdling and "WEEEEE I DONT KNOW WHAT TO DOOOOO HEE HEE!" some people will have to make the tough choice of turning down offers to gamble for a wait list offer that may come after april 15.

So you're expressing dislike of people considering opinions from others that may or may not be relevant when making one of the biggest life choices ever by...expecting these people to consider your opinion that may or may not be relevant...

    Okay.

"Dream school" =/= right choice. They aren't gross, selfish, or awful by carefully considering their opinions instead of pouncing on an acceptance out of emotion/excitement.

    >I am 99% sure that I know which school I want to go but this hasn't stopped me from seeking advice from every single person I can on what they think I should do. It's pointless though because when they say something in favor of a school Other than the one I want to go to, then I just argue with them.

Exactly the same here. I KNOW which program I'm attending, but that doesn't stop me from consulting with other people and then arguing with them when they disagree with my decision!

I'm in the same boat! I was accepted to my dream school along with another great school as well. I'm stuck between decisions but there's always something pushing me to go to my dream school since I've wanted it so bad. The thing is, neither schools have offered financial aid so I'm stuck for a while I think. Plus they're all very far away from where I live so it's a little difficult to find a place to live as well.

Hi, again. I actually would like to teach high school for a bit. I need to take a break from the horrific experience that was graduate school. I was actually offered admission at a school in Philly, but there was no funding and no chance to ever become a TA there. That's why I turned down the offer. I think I might go back to grad school later, when I'm like 30. But in truth, I have a deep appreciation for kids, and I think I want to teach at the high school level for a while before going back for the PhD.

    Good day, everyone.

I would like to hear your input about possibly applying for the Fall 2016 application cycle.

I recently graduated from NYU with a Master's in Humanities. I wrote a thesis on apartheid in South Africa, so it was more anthropologically-based. I did apply to some Comp Lit PhD programs last fall, but I was denied by 7 schools. My main research interests were 20th Century African and American literature.

Come to think of it, I am a bit more passionate about American Modernism. One of my dear professors in London told me it would be worth a shot to apply for a PhD in English Literature.

But I am terrified of the GRE Subject Test. I already bombed the General GRE, and I have no idea how on earth to study for the English GRE. Many schools require it.

In the meantime, I am trying to find work as a high school English teacher. I got my certification this past March. I think I'm going to spend a year (or two) teaching and sprucing up my application.

I have two great recommenders from NYU's English Dept and Comparative Lit department. The third might be a professor whose class I took at Rutgers' Comp Lit department.

I need high test scores, so I'm going to try again.

But what else can I prepare for?

I always thought doing graduate work at Chapterhouse would be amazing. Imagine having a Reverend Mother as your adviser!

Well, US News' rankings list is from 2013, if that helps.
