  1. Why not be FirstName MiddleLast MaidenName MarriedName? Lots of people have two maiden names... you could also hyphenate.

"Additional funding for 100 CGS Doctoral Scholarships for business-related research –fiscal year 2009-2010 only" (this is from the presentation SSHRC gave to my uni) ^^ I would think that would imply that they were only given out last year, especially given that it mentions additional MA awards for the 2010-11 fiscal year.

Just popping in to say that no special business PhD SSHRCs were given out this year (that was a 2009-10 only thing, though the MA business awards go on for 2 years). Not sure if this makes a difference to any of the arguments, lol. Also, I'm in my first year of my PhD and got the regular SSHRC... so definitely not all PhD1 students received a CGS. (am hoping but not expecting to be bumped, of course!)

Congrats! My score was lower so I doubt I'll get an upgrade, but it's nice to see that they're being very quick about this!

    Congrats Snasser!
  6. Received my letter today and will be declining.
  7. Not for me. I firmly believe that if a school isn't willing to fully fund you, including all tuition and living expenses, it's not worth going to. I've had no problems getting these demands met by the schools that wanted me.

Finally received my letter: 1. Received SDF ($20k x 3 years), score 18.1 2. Ottawa 3. Letter received: May 7th; Letter postmarked: May 5th; Letter dated: May 3rd. 4. Subject area and/or committee: Sociology 5. Applied from within university 6. Year in PhD studies when you would take up the award (so, what you’ll be in Sept/Oct. 2010): 2nd year PhD 7. Taylor, Ross, or Queen's Fellowship?? Nope 8. Anything else you want to include that might be helpful: 2 conference presentation, 4 non peer reviewed publications, 3 time winner of OGS, straight As all the way through (including all of undergrad), Big Name supervisor, 'sexy topic' (commercialization of academic research)

LOL, that's probably a bit optimistic, mudlark (though of course I would love to be bumped up!).

I called grad studies and was informed I've won the $20k/ year SSHRC for 3 years. Anyone at Queen's can call Leisa Macdonald to find out... Good luck to everyone else waiting, and when I get my letter I'll let you know my score.

No SSHRC letter in the mail today. I might try pestering my department after lunch...

We don't get mail on Saturdays in ON. I think it's just an American thing.

Tried calling grad studies - no one answered. Called my department and they said they've heard nothing so far...

Just checked my mailbox and all that was in it was an Enbridge bill. Presumably it will come tomorrow, when I am in Toronto. *headdesk*

How on earth am I going to finish this essay? OMG, I can't stop obsessing about SSHRC! Must. Keep. Writing.

    SSHRC 2010

And may I ask which school you're at?

    SSHRC 2010

    Congrats!! Who did you email?
  19. That sounds very expensive. Are you sure you need to apply to so many? I wanted to work with a particular scholar (who only works with one new student a year). So I applied to his school and one other (the one at which I had completed my MA). Luckily, Awesome Prof (now Awesome Supervisor) wanted to work with me and I was set. I think if you have really good 'fit' with a program or prof, you don't need to worry about applying to as many schools. At the very least it will save you some money, lol!
  20. You probably won't hear much until after the SSHRC letters have gone out - I would give it another week or so.

    SSHRC 2010

^^ If the letters had gone out before 3 today, I would likely be receiving mine tomorrow. When I called at 3:30 it didn't sound like they started the mailing process. couldn't they potentially process them this evening/early morning tomorrow and ship em out in the am? I highly doubt it... but anything's possible. Based on my experience of living in Ottawa and mailing things to other Ottawa addresses, we probably still have a 2-3 day wait... and that's *if* they do in fact mail the letter out tomorrow (I'll believe it when I see it, lol)!

    SSHRC 2010

even if they go out today, though, mail pickup is at, like, 3... No one will be receiving letters tomorrow (well, someone might, but a sparkly unicorn might also offer to finish writing my paper for me), which sucks because tomorrow is my last day in Ottawa until Monday!

^^ He kind of hung up on me - definitely did not want to stay on the phone. I think they may be getting a bit flustered by the amount of work + phone calls + whatever else it is they do.

    SSHRC 2010

I called (I couldn't help myself, lol!) and was told they will mailed out tomorrow. I guess this means we'll start 'hearing' results on Thursday or Friday.
